I am so excited to start talking about Evolution this week. One of the first things that we will discuss will be Charles Darwin and the HMS Beagle.
Below I am going to attach a link to the homepage of The HMS Beagle Project. Check out this awesome website. Peruse through the project and the voyages.
Next check out this awesome Google Street View tour of the Galapagos Islands. I can only imagine what Charles Darwin thought when he first saw these islands off the coast of South America.
You have a couple of options for this week:
A. Write about the HMS Beagle Project. Around-the-world sailing would be a unique experience with the new HMS Beagle. Would you want to volunteer to be one of the scientists aboard the new HMS Beagle? Why? What would you want to study: atmospheric science, biodiversity, climate change, ecology, geology, ocean science, plant science, taxonomy, or DNA barcoding? Why? How would you convince the board that you should be the scientist to go?
B. Write about the Google Street View. Check out the link in the upper right hand corner where it says "About This Place." What were the endemic species that the tour showed you that are found no where else in the world? What did you think? What makes them different from sea lions, birds, turtles and organisms found on North America? Did you like the 360 degree tour? Why? Watch the video clip: Join a Modern Day Mapping Expedition. What did you think?
I chose to do prompt B. The Galapagos sea lion, blue footed booby, Galapagos giant tortoise, Galapagos marine Iguana, and the Magnificent Frigate Bird are all animals that are not found anywhere else in the world. I think that all of these different types of animals are so fascinating, especially the Blue Footed Booby. What makes these species different from any other is that fact that they are either vulnerable to extinction or endangered. The 360 degree tour was so cool because the oceans in the Galapagos seem to be much cleaner and have clearer water which makes them even more beautiful than our oceans.
ReplyDeleteThe video, "Join a Modern Day Mapping Expedition" was magnificent. I think a lot of tedious work would go in to mapping an island; however, it would would also be very fun and rewarding.
In response to Alyssa, I think it’s so cool that their are some types of animals that are only found on the Galapagos. I think that since these animals are vulnerable to extinction or endangered, we should work on protecting them and preserve their natural habitat.
DeleteThat's a good point about the oceans being clearer-- it's probably because there aren't many humans there, so air and water pollution are minimal.
DeleteFor this blog, I chose Option A. I would want to be one of the scientists aboard the HMS Beagle. I think it would be really cool to got to many places where I haven’t been and see so many creatures that not many people know about. I really love learning and seeing different kinds of animals, so this is right up my alley. If chosen to go aboard the HMS Beagle, I would want to study biodiversity. Since biodiversity is the variety of life, it would be really cool to see and record all of the new and old varieties of species. Even though I have never really studied biodiversity, I would convince to let me go by saying that I can pick up new learning skills very easily and that I’m a great note-taker.
ReplyDeleteI would study biodiversity too. Being able to see so many different kinds of plants and animals would be really cool, especially if you discovered new ones.
DeleteI agree with jaylynn that it would be really cool to all the different types of animals.
DeleteI agree that traveling aboard the HMS Beagle would be a very unique adventure and you'll be apart of and a extraordinary experience to be able to have completed.
DeleteOption A: I would want to volunteer for the HMS Beagle because it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity and it would be worth everything. If I did get to go aboard the ship and travel around the world, I would want to study biodiversity because I would want to learn about all the different animals that I had never seen or heard about before. I think I could convince the board to let me on the HMS Beagle because I am just a young scientist that wants to learn about animals and bring my learning's back to my home country which can help all scientists.
ReplyDeleteI chose option B because I think the Galapagos islands and all their creatures are simply beautiful. The species that are only found on the Galapagos Islands are the Galapagos Tortoise, Sea Lion, Marine Iguana, Magnificent Frigatebird, and Blue-footed Booby. I think these animals are unique because they are only found on one small island and their ecological roles are not what you expect. For example the Galapagos Tortoise walks very slow and methodically because it has no predators to worry about. I really liked the 360 tour because the water is so beautiful and clear in the Galapagos. The video clip was really amazing! The scientists really captured the beautiful landscape of the various Galapagos Islands and ocean floor and fish were super cool too.
ReplyDeleteI would love to go aboard the HMS Beagle. Being able to sail around the world and see so many different places would be life changing. I would like to study biodiversity because it would be interesting to see all the different plants and animals and possibly even discover new ones. To convince the board that I should go, I would tell them of my good intentions for the project and give them some new ideas that I was thinking.
ReplyDeleteOption a: I would want to go in the HMS Beagle because I think it would be a great experience. There are so many creatures there that we don't have here and I think it would be really cool to see all of that. I would study ocean science if I went there because the ocean is a really cool place. All the different kinds of ocean animals are really interesting because they are all different in their own way. It would also be fun to go on the submarine to look at the animals in their own habitat. I would tell the board that I'm a scientist looking for a great experience and would want to put my study's towards something great for my country.
ReplyDeleteI chose option A. I would volunteer to go around the world on the HMS Beagle because it might be one of my only chances to. If I did go on the ship I would want to study the biodiversity so I could see all the animals and maybe even discover a new one. I would convince the board by doing research and then show them that I know what I am doing and can be a helpful hand on board the ship.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you if I went on the HMS Beagle I would also want to study biodiversity
DeleteBecause the Galapagos Islands are geographically isolated from other land masses and virtually undisturbed by humans, several species have adapted to its unique environment, including the blue-footed booby, the marine iguana, the Galapagos tortoise, and the magnificent frigatebird. Each of these organisms' isolated evolutions has made specific their role in the environment. I did not enjoy the 360 degree tour because it went very slowly and the coolest scene was the thumbnail, so it was downhill from the beginning.
ReplyDeleteI would not like to map an island as it seems it would be tedious, boring work with little reward.
I agree with your opinion on the 360 tour. Any smart and self respecting tour place would know that you always put your main attraction at the end of said tour.
DeleteI agree that 360 tours don't have a great reward. I appreciate the effort, but 360 tours don't give me a nature feeling. It kinda feels empty.
DeleteIn response to option A, I would definitely volunteer to be a scientist on the HMS Beagle because it would be an absolutely fascinating and worth-while expedition. There are thousands of species yet to be discovered, and the Galapagos holds the existence of many of these creatures. The ocean life there is beyond incredible. I had wanted to be a marine biologist for a long time when I was younger, but on such a voyage I would research the overall taxonomy of the creatures inhabiting the islands. The HMS Beagle has ground-breaking technology that allows scientists to use DNA bar coding to identify unknown specimens, imagine how cool it would be to discover a new species and name it yourself! So awesome! And obviously, they would have to let me join their board of scientists because I'm totally qualified for anything as a freshman biology student; it's good to start young! Sign me up for a trip to the Galapagos.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it would be awesome to discover and name a new species all on your own!
DeleteI agree that it would be amazing to be able to go to the Galapagos to see new creatures and be able to name organisms.
DeleteFor the blog this week I chose prompt B. Some species only found in the Galapagos Islands are; Galápagos Sea Lion, Blue-Footed Booby, Galápagos Giant Tortoise, Galápagos Marine Iguana, and Magnificent Frigatebird. I think it is interesting how a series of islands can contain completely unquie species! The Galapagos Islands are different because humans haven't manipulated the wild life. The video was really cool because it showed some incredible views and really captured how alive and different the ecosystem is with the wide variety of organisms isolated on or around the islands. Overall, I was fascinated by the environment on the Galapagos Islands.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the environment of the Galapagos seems amazing and the video was a way we could see all of the aspects of the island, including the underwater point of view!
DeleteIn my opinion going on this around-the-world sailing trip would be a very unique experience with the new HMS Beagle. I would definitely be nervous to go on this trip but excited to volunteer to be a scientist on the boat. I would like to be a scientist on board because of all the different organisms there are to see. I would want to study ocean science because there's so much to study and the idea is very interesting to me to better understand the ocean. One way I would convince the board to allow me to be a scientist would be to inform them of my interest to learn more about the ocean. I would also tell how much I would love to participate in this once in a lifetime event.
ReplyDeleteI would want to study ocean science as well! The ocean is truly an amazing place, and who wouldn't want the chance to discover new species.
DeleteKatelyn, I agree - I'd want to research ocean science because there is so much to study.
DeleteI agree that traveling aboard the HMS Beagle would be a unique experience and would like to see all the different organisms.
DeleteGoing to the Galapagos would be so exciting and fascinating. I like your plan to persuade the scientists!
DeleteI totally agree. The ocean is such a cool and undiscovered place. I think we have so many amazing things we haven't discovered yet about the ocean.
Delete
ReplyDeleteThe HMS Beagle Project is a project to recreate the actual ship that Darwin took on his voyage to the Galapagos Islands. I would volunteer to sail aboard because I’d love to learn and research the different animals there. It would be an awesome experience to observe some of the same kind of creatures that Darwin was so interested in. If I was one of the scientists, I’d want to study oceanography, with an emphasis on biology. I’ve always been interested in the ocean. It’s so vast that much of it is unknown. Therefore, I'm intrigued and like the thrill of mysterious, undiscovered sea creatures and processes. To go, I would show the board that I am very responsible and conscientious and would know what I need to get done.
I would volunteer too! I think it would be so cool to have that opportunity! Also I completely agree with you about the ocean! There is so much yet to discover and it would be amazing to be a part of some of those discoveries!
DeleteOption B: The Google Street View is amazing! Seeing the Galapagos up close like that was surreal, and so beautiful. The photos were such great quality and showed so many details and different places in the Galapagos, it was like being there! It was also just crazy to think I was seeing some of the things Darwin saw. Some of the endemic species the tour showed were the Galapagos sea lions, and the blue-footed bobby and of course the Galapagos giant tortoise. These creatures are different from those in North America because they haven’t mated with outsiders of the island in a very long time, and they have mutated to help they to survive in the Galapagos. The video was also very interesting. It was really cute how excited the scientists got while exploring! They are so dedicated to this and it’s really inspiring!
ReplyDeleteIt would be so amazing if we could all experience the Galapagos in real life. Though experiencing it on Google Street View is still breath taking. I totally agree it was adorable to see the scientists get so happy by doing their jobs! it just shows how much this means to them and its not just for money but they do it because it makes them happy. And that in itself is really awesome
DeleteOption A: Honestly, who would really want to go on some expedition in an antiquated boat even if it has satellite. It's a nice sentiment but not very practical. If they were to use a real boat to go research animals and stuff, I would probably go to study plant sciences since it is such an interesting subject and because plants are so cool. Going on that world wide expedition would be really eye opening to see the huge amounts of plant life and the diversity of the fauna in different regions on the voyage.
ReplyDeleteI agree that I wouldn't really want to go on the expedition too. I agree that it would be just too boring even with satellite. I think plants would be just a little too boring to study as well. That's why I would study geology.
DeleteI agree that plant Science would be cool, but I'm more interested in biodiversity and the different animals.
DeletePlant science sounds really cool and there are a lot of different plants out there. That is a great choice because there would be a lot of diversity in your research.
DeleteOption A: I think it would be neat to be a scientist a part of the HMS Beagle. It would be really neat to travel to places that I've never been before, as well as see creatures that aren't commonly known. Because I enjoy explorering different varities and aspects of life, I would chose to study biodiversity if I had the chance to go aboard the ship.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it would be fascinating to see organisms that very few have observed. Not just the organisms but the geological structure is also very cool.
DeleteI agree with Taylor. I think it would be very neat to be apart of the HMS Beagle. I also love exploring different aspects of life too.
DeleteI agree with Taylor. Exploring different aspects of life can be very rewarding and fun.
DeleteI think studying biodiversity would also be really interesting to be able to explore the species that have not yet been fully documented.
DeleteI agree because biodiversity is so cool. There are millions of species of animals that I have never seen but would like to see. On the other hand, sailing on a replica of some antiquated tub would not be the ideal conditions for me to be in even if the trip would be really neat.
DeleteOption A: I would not want to go on an around the world on this boat because during this time, boats weren't the best to travel in, I don't want to risk my life for an island. However, they did make it both ways so that must have been very exciting. If I was a scientist, I would like to study biodiversity because that would be so thrilling to observe such magnificent creatures.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Seamus because then again, the boats back then weren't all that sanitary nor were they all that safe.
DeleteFor this blog I chose prompt A. I would want to volunteer to be one the scientists aboard the new HMS Beagle because it would be an once in a lifetime opportunity to sail around the world. It be an adventure worth taking, to study animals that may not have been discovered yet, and be the one to do it. I would want to study ocean science because the ocean is such a unique place to me, all the different sea animals that are so similar, but so different at the same time. To be able to scuba around or take a ride in the Johnson Sealink #1 would be amazing, because you can be discovering new things just by doing what you love. In order to convince the board that I should be the scientists I would tell them that I am very interested in ocean life and would like to learn more.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it would be such an unforgettable experience. It's definitely something I would like to experience in my life time if I ever get the chance.
DeleteI agree with you Emily. I think it would be such a great experience traveling and discovering new things.
DeleteFor this week’s response, I’ll write about option A. I think sailing around the world would be pretty cool to see all the different places/environments but honestly, I think it would just be way too boring to sail across the world with really nothing else to do but look at the environments. The HMS Beagle project wouldn’t be the most fun for me because there wouldn’t be very much to do besides study science and observe places. If I were to go on the voyage I would probably study geology because I like learning about the Earth and how it works. If I were to go on the voyage I’d convince the board that I’m the scientist to go because of all the information I would bring back to them because in the end, the board would want the person with the most facts. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be apart of the HMS Beagle, it would just be a little too boring.
ReplyDeleteI chose to write about the first option. It'd be pretty... unique to say the least. I don't know if I would want to sail around the world via boat. But it would definitely be a cool experience. They say that there is still so much of the ocean that we haven't discovered, and it would be really cool to say that I was the one the discovered a certain type of fish. That being said, I would be a DNA bar coder. It seems like a pretty cool job.
ReplyDeleteI think you would be great as a DNA bar coder. It does sound like fun. Sailing around the world would be a great experience and you could definitely learn a lot. I personally would love to explore the sea.
DeleteI would agree, a DNA barcoding is quite interesting and it would be a really cool career choice! Even though sailing around the world seems fun, I do have my own doubts too. Like, I don't know if I'd be able to be away from friends and family for however long this voyage will take.
DeleteIn response to Andrew, I too think that DNA bar coding would be cool because how awesome would it feel to realize you helped discover a new species of a certain organism.
DeleteI choose option A; It would be so cool to be a part of a team that discovers organisms. I would love to sail on the HMS Beagle because when i was about 5, my Grandfather taught me how to sail and since then, i've been sailing every summer. I think that it would be remarkable to get to go on an expedition and study ocean science because you are in the water and are exploring the ocean.
ReplyDeleteI chose choice B because I loved the street tour it was so amazing and the pictures were great..After going through it I told my mom we should so go. She didn’t even have an idea why though. The galapagos sea lions, blue footed booby, marine iguanas, giant tortoises, and frigate birds are only found on the islands. I thought that the fact that they are only found on the galapagos islands is strange yet amazing. I loved the 360 degree view it was really cool. I hated it also though because I would love to be there in person instead of it being a picture. I believe the animals are different in the galapagos because their species have become accustomed to the galapagos islands.
ReplyDeleteoption B: some of the endemic species that were shown on the tour were the Galapagos sea lion, sea turtles and the blue footed boobies. What makes them different from the organisms found on the North American continent is that they evolved to their environment, an environment with little human interference because of this they did not have to adapt to our ever so changing world all they had to adapt to was there's. I did like the 360 tour because it showed you the species of the Galapagos islands without disturbing them. Joining a Modern Day Mapping Expedition was interesting because it gave you a glimpse of the island but also how the people mapping the islands work.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the 360 tour was interesting and enjoyed the small view of the islands we did get from it.
DeleteI chose option A. I think sailing the HMS Beagle would be a very unique experience. I would want to be a volunteer to aboard the new HMS Beagle. Because I love traveling and seeing new things. I also think it would be very fun to do. I would want to study ocean science because I find the ocean very interesting. I would try to convince the board that I am the scientist that should be going by showing them other new things I discovered in the ocean.
ReplyDeleteI think sailing the Hms beagle wuld be a very unique experience too and I would also want to study ocean science!
DeleteOption A: I would love to be a part of the HMS Beagle. For one thing, I love to travel and see different things around the world. I also love animals and watching them from there natural habitat. If I had to choose one thing to study, it would be biodiversity because I'd love to see the different animals around the world, and how each of them respond differently in their environment.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Traveling and study the unique animals on this island would basically be a dream come true.
DeleteThe HMS Beagle project is a great foundation dedicated to using hands-on learning to engage young people with science, while delivering original biodiversity and climate change research. I would love to be an on board scientist because I haven't traveled a lot in my life so I think that would be a great experience to learn and see different parts of the world. I would want to study ocean science because I've never been to the ocean. I would convince the board to study ocean science because much of the ocean has not been explored and it could be hiding important plants, animals and artifacts.
ReplyDeleteI chose option B for this weeks blog post. The Galapagos Island is truly beautiful with all its scenery and creatures, and imagining how amazing it must have been for Charles Darwin to see is unreal. The creatures that are on these islands are giant Galapagos Tortoises, Blue-footed Boobies, Sea Lions, Magnificent Frigatebirds, and Marine Iguanas. All of these species are extremely unique to these islands, and they have very important ecological roles that need to be sustained. In regards to the 360 degree tour, I loved everything about it, including the angles you were able see the islands from and how it gave you such a real aspect of what the islands are really like. Lastly, the video clip was really interesting since they previewed the different islands that Galapagos consists of and you are able to see how all of the google street views are made.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Elise that the Island was truly beautiful. I also really like seeing the tortoises and how they spend their time on the island.
DeleteOption B: Google Street View was very unique and interesting! I enjoyed viewing the sea lions, he tortoise and the Blue-Footed Bobby.these animals are different from animals in American because the animals in the Galapagos are mutating and evolving to survive in the environments of the Galapagos, and they have not mated with other outside animals. I found the video very interesting and I would love to be given an amazing opportunity like that in the future.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteThroughout the tour and exploring the website I was introduced to so many species I had never heard of before! There was the magnificent frigate bird, the galapagos marine iguana, the galapagos sea lion, the blue-footed booby, and last but certainly not least, the galapagos giant tortoise. Because they live on these islands they are all very unique compared to animals like them around the world. One example that amazed me was the marine iguana. They are only found on the Galapagos islands and they can actually forage and live in the sea. I really loved the 360 degree tour, like a lot. It was so amazing, I can’t even imagine what it would be like in person. I can only imagine what Darwin was thinking when he first laid his eyes on them. The Join a Modern Day Mapping Expedition video wouldn’t load on my computer, no matter how many times I refreshed it and restarted it, which is kind of disappointing. I can only imagine that it would be incredible!
I also thought the marine iguana was super cool, and the 360 degree tour was so amazing as well.
DeleteThe google street view tour through the Galapagos Islands was amazing. Some species are found only on these islands, such as blue-footed boobies and galapagos sea lions. My favorite view was the one of the sea lions. It was so cool to see them looking directly at the camera; it totally felt like they were looking at me! It would be such a cool experience to go to the Galapagos Islands, especially if I could study the unique organisms there too. It makes me sad that there are animals becoming endangered by invasive species. I think if I had the opportunity to study in the Galapagos, I definitely would take it right away.
ReplyDeleteI chose option A. I would love to volunteer for the HMS Beagle I think it would be very exciting to sail around the world. I would personally want to study biodiversity, it just seems like it would be the most interesting thing to study on the Galapagos. Because it is the place where evolution is the most prominent in all animals. From the different birds who’s beaks have evolved depending on their food source to the fish who have a more colorful body to stay more hidden in the dark waters. I would convince the board by telling them how this would help benefit the furthering in proving evolution to more people in our country.
ReplyDeleteOption B: I absolutely loved the tours of the Galapagos. They were beautiful. Some endemic species shown in the tours were the Giant Tortoises, the sea lions, and the frigatebirds. These animals are different from the ones found on North America because their environment has been left untouched by humans. They have been able to adapt and find what works. In America, the animals we have need to adapt constantly because we are constantly changing the environment. I liked the 360 tour because it let me see the whole island. It also let me "believe" I was there and helped show me what I could see if I could ever visit. After watching "Join a Modern Day Mapping Expedition," I think it would be amazing to do that for a living. You can explore and map what you see. You get the chance to explore the unexplored, and you get paid!
ReplyDeleteOption A: I would want to volunteer for the HMS Beagle because it would be a really cool opportunity. If I got the chance to go aboard the ship and travel the world, I would want to study biodiversity because I would like to learn about the different organisms and species that I hadn't seen nor heard before. I think I could convince the board to let me on the HMS Beagle because I am a young, intelligent, good looking, dedicated scientist that wants to learn about animals and how they react and live.
ReplyDelete"Intelligent, good looking, dedicated scientist" hahahahahaha but yeah I agree it would be really cool to board the ship because you could see all of the biodiversity of the animals and discover new animals that you've never seen before!
DeleteI agree I think it would be very intresting to see so much biodiversity in one place
DeleteI chose to do the second prompt. On this fascinating tour some animals that were shown were: the Galapagos giant tortoise, the Galapagos sea lion, the frigate bird, the blue footed booby and the Galapagos marine iguana! These creatures have on thing in common: they are not found anywhere else in the world! These creatures are incredibly amazing to me! I think the most interesting would have to be the Galápagos sea lion! They are so cute and I find them so interesting! The difference of these species is that they have adapted over time to fit to their environment and that they have long pointy noses which makes them different from regular sea lions! I loved the 360 tour and I thought it was really cool because it was like I was actually there! I thought the video "Join a Modern day Mapping Expedition" was incredible! Obviously they put a lot of work into mapping an island but it seems like such a cool experience!
ReplyDeleteI did Option B but your description of the Google maps tour makes that seem amazing! I would love to see all those creatures one day, like the sea lion and frigate bird.
DeleteI chose Option A because I would love to be the one aboard the HMS Beagle to find new discoveries. I would want to study ecology because of how the way newly detected species react to their surroundings and with other organisms. In order to convince the board I would help them unearth a new brand new organism that would blow their minds.
ReplyDeleteOption A: Truly it would be an amazing experience being on the new HMS Beagle, being able to travel around the world. I personally would not like to be on that trip because I have a small fear of being on boats, so I would not be able to survive the trip. If I was to be able to go on (despite my fear) I would want to study ocean science because I find it quite fascinating how much of the ocean we don't know about and it would be cool to try to discover more. I would convince the board to let me on by telling them I already know some things about ocean science, which could help the voyage, and I know a little about boats so I would be able to help the ship be a success.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be a part of HMS Beagle. I love to see so many different cool places where I could see so many cool species. I would like to be a volunteer to be a part of the ocean studying. The ocean has always fascinated me, and I could only imagine the amount of amazing new life and other cool things I would find. I would try to convince the board that I should be able to join them on the voyages because that would be amazing.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that it would be so cool to study the ocean because of the amazing life I know you could find that no one has ever seen before. Being a part of the HMS Beagle would be life changing.
ReplyDeleteI chose to do option A. I would volunteer for something like this because it seems like a very unique once in a lifetime opportunity to forget everything and travel the world, which is something that I really wish to do. Ecology would be an interesting field to study considering life is so different depending on the location. How living things interact is intriguing. To convince the board, I’d say I’m a quick learner.
ReplyDeleteI would want to be a part of the HMS Beagle simply because it's a once in a lifetime chance to explore somewhere that not many people get the chance to experience. I would want to study ocean science because getting to see all the different underwater species would be incredible. In order to convince the board that I should go, I would introduce a series of new ideas to help make advanced discoveries.
ReplyDeleteThe HMS Beagle Project is pretty cool, how even 200 years after Darwin's expedition to the Galapagos islands there is still so much knowledge we can yet to attain. I don’t think I would ever volunteer to be one of the scientists aboard the new HMS Beagle. Though if my occupation was in the science field, then going to study at the Galapagos islands would most likely be my life goal. If I had to pick I would want to study ocean science and biodiversity. I think it’s super fascinating seeing the differences due to the varieties of climates. And everything in the ocean is like another world compared to land dwellers, it would be like studying aliens, amazing. If I was interested in boarding HMS, I would first show them how determined I am, share my dreams and most likely they would match their own.
ReplyDeleteFor my blog response I chose option B. Some of the endemic species shown in the tour that are not found anywhere else in the world include the Galapagos sea lion, blue footed booby, Galapagos giant Tortoise, Galapagos marine iguana and the magnificent Frigatebird. I think it’s fascinating that with such a large and vast world these species are found only on the Galapagos islands. The difference between those animals and those from around the world is that these animals are untouched by humans and their environment has not been messed up by humans. I really liked the 360 degree tour, I loved searching for the different animals in their habitats and I especially enjoyed the seals. However it just makes me want to go even more. After watching the “Join a Modern Day Mapping Expedition” I realized just how amazing the galapagos islands were and how big they were as well. It’s so interesting that the perfect environment for a rainforest like population of species could be home to so few.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's interesting to see the animals in the Galapagos, and how different they are, compared to ours. I found the Blue-footed booby interesting, because of how it's feet were blue due to their diet. The flamingo also gets its pink color from their food.
DeleteI chose option A. I think sailing the HMS Beagle would be an unforgettable experience. I would love to study ocean science because as kid I have always been intrigued with the ocean and how it functions. I would love to go on the new HMS Beagle because I love to go on adventures and I enjoy traveling a lot. I would convince the board that I am the scientist to go by showing them all things I have discovered from previous years and all the new things we could discover.
ReplyDeleteI fully agree very intriguing
DeleteI chose option A. First of all, I love the ocean. I have been on two cruises and boat rides in different states and countries and it's always thrilling. This is why I would want to study ocean science aboard the HMS Beagle. Sea creatures and plants are so unique and different from land organisms and I feel like I would never get bored examining them. I would also like to study biodiversity and compare differences in organisms from different places. Toconvince the board that I should be able to go, I would do as much research as I could on the HMS Beagle so I know what its history is and be able to createa plan of how to continue Darwin's work 200 years after he sailed. This hopefully would prove to the board my determination and they would accept me.
ReplyDeleteI would chose option A because I could travel around the world on the HMS Beagle. That would be cool because it would probably be one of my only opportunities to. If I did go on the ship I would want to study the biodiversity so I could see all the animals that are very much different from those living near us and the rest of North America. I would convince the board by doing a lot of research and then show them that I have a lot of knowledge on the topic and that I am worthy to work on and board the ship.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kyle in choosing option A and that to get on the ship I would show them a lot of my prior research.
DeleteI decided to answer prompt B and write about the virtual tour of the Galápagos Islands. The tour was super cool! However, I felt like I just wanted someone to take me through and not have me have to click each site myself and then back out of it. The endemic species this tour showed were the Blue-Footed Booby, the Giant Tortoise, the Marine Iguana, and the Magnificent Frigatebird. They were different from any other kind of animal in the world because they had evolved right on the Galapagos Islands due to the Geographic Isolation. The Giant Tortoise is my favorite animal! I think the 360 tour was super interesting, and it made me REALLY want to visit the Galapagos Islands at some point in my life. I think being a person to take pictures for the purpose of sharing it with the world via Google Maps would probably be the coolest job ever. You would get to see the world AND be helping other people to see the world, too!
ReplyDeleteSome of the animals at the galapagos islands are Galapagos sea lion, blue-footed bobby, galapagos giant tortoise, and more. They look more tribal and wild then are slightly domesticated animals back home. The 360 tour was pretty underwhelming experience in all honesty. I wish there was a way to leave the sea. However, the video gave me a better understanding of the land. However I am concerned that our research will soon again destroy this wild island.
ReplyDeleteI choose option B and it was splendid! I love that we are able to see things like that even if we haven't been able to experience it actually. I think the most beautiful part was the San Cristobal Shoreline. The water is so blue and clean looking. The Blue footed Boobies are special to the island and they are really cute. All in all I think it is a great place and amazing to see its scenery and landscaping.
ReplyDeleteSo basically they are making a 21st century Beagle that’s replicated from the original. They are including the best technology needed for the coastal waters and open ocean sailing. I would definitely volunteer for this expedition.. It would be a sail into the past to see the things that the legendary scientist Darwin did. I would most likely study the ocean. Its a huge portion of earth that never has been discovered and it deserves to be. I would basically stare the board in the eyes and exclaim i deserve to go because there's no one in the world who wants to know more about the ocean then I.
ReplyDeleteI chose option a. i would deffinetly volunteer for the HMS Beagle voyage. It would be incredible to see all of the amazing creatures that the Galapogos offer because there are organisms that can not be found anywhere else in the world making the voyage even more spectacular. I would love to learn about and study creatures that the reat of the world may not even know exist. I would also love to see the Galapogos turttle for myself
ReplyDeleteI chose prompt B. The Galápagos Islands are amazing and beautiful. There are so many animals that you can't see anywhere else like the Galápagos sea lions, and the Galapagos giant tortoise. One day it would be amazing to go to the Galápagos Islands. It is so interesting how the same animal from island to island can be so different.
ReplyDeleteI would want to study biodiversity because I have always been fascinated by the many different kinds of animals on earth. Finding a new species would be a whole new world of discovery and scientific progress. Although, I would not want to go on the HMS Beagle because I would not want to spend that long of a time at sea. I would go on field expeditions but I would not go all over the world.
ReplyDeleteIt would be cool to go on that expidition but I would not want to be out at sea that long. It would become dull when sailing.
ReplyDeleteYes I would want to be on the HMS beagle because of the trip to the Galápagos islands and I would see all the cool stuff on the island. and if I was there back then I would get to see real life pirates and I think that would be pretty cool. I would want to study ocean science because of all the cool and newly becoming animal life in the ocean. I would convince them by showing them all my sconce research that I had required if I was actually a scientist back then and I would hope they would accept my offer to go and then I would be on my way.
ReplyDeleteOption A
I chose prompt B.The unique animals it showed off were the Galapagos sea lion, Blue-footed Booby, the Galapagos giant tortoise, the Galapagos marine iguana, and the Magnificent Frigatebird. I really liked the 360 degree tour. I was all so beautiful, and so interesting. I watched the video clips on the website, and they show cased quite a few interesting locations in the Galapagos Islands, and they included explanations of each location, and were incredibly interesting.
ReplyDeleteI would want to be a scientist on the new HMS beagle because i think traveling around the world would be a great education and emotional experience. I would study biodiversity because that interests me the most. I would convince them to let me be a scientist by giving them lots of donation and intelligent essays. Id also tell them ive "studied biodiversity my whole life" and talk about my bio diverse house of cats and dogs.
ReplyDeleteI chose option A because I think it would be amazing to be one of the leading scientists on an expedition devoting my time to nothing else other than studying the environment around me. I would volunteer because it’s one of those things that you dream about doing for a long time but never having the resources to go on such a trip. You always hear about these amazing instances where people are able to travel wherever they want to do something they love. The field of study I would pursue would be ocean science for sure. I see this as a perfect fit for me because they ocean is my favorite place on earth. I’m a certified scuba diver and that has been the best thing I have ever done because when I’m underwater it’s like I’m in a whole other universe. I see things up close and personal that some people never get to see in their lifetime. I would convince the other scientists by saying this: I believe that I could make a huge difference in the field of ocean science and the creatures that live there. There are literally millions of new species that are still undiscovered in the ocean and I want to help uncover so many of them. Did you know that humans have more knowledge of the moon than our own oceans?
ReplyDeleteI chose option A for this blog because I think it would be so cool to be aboard the HMS Beagle as one of the scientist with Darwin. After first learning about the islands in 7th grade I've always thought it would be the coolest thing to actually go down to the Galapagos islands and see where all of Darwin's work took place. Also the animals they were showing in the video all looked pretty cool to see! If I were to be a scientist I would study biodiversity because I think it would be fun to explore all the different types of animals and to even have the chance of being the first person to discover a new animal!
