Building a dinosaur from a chicken?

For the final blog post of the year, I thought it would be interesting to explore the idea of building a dinosaur.  Last week The Washington Post ran an article about turning bird beaks back into dinosaur bones.  How cool is that!

Attached to the article is an awesome TED talk.  For this week I want you to watch the TED talk below:

What do you think?  Write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) about what you think after watching this video.  Here are some questions to get you started, but I really want you to craft a thoughtful response about your gut reaction to the video.  When you were little did you dream of being a paleontologist and having a pet dinosaur?  (I have read my sons countless books about little boys with pet dinosaurs.  Heck, isn't Clifford, the big red dog, similar to a giant dinosaur?)  Do you like the explanation of Jurassic Park?  Have you read the book Jurassic Park or seen the movie?  Is it possible?  In class we discussed evidence of evolution, what did you think of the fossil evidence?  Did you like how they were able to extract dinosaur cells from the fossils?  Would you want to be part of the scientific research expedition?  My favorite part is when Jack Horner talks about the gene modification and shows the embryological evidence.  This video is a great way to reinforce the evidence of evolution lab we did last week.  What would we do with a Chicken-o-saurus?

  1. Even though this video was sixteen minutes long, it was actually enjoyable. I think that scientists trying to turn a chicken into a dinosaur is pretty cool. As a little kid, I loved the thought of having a pet dinosaur, but never had the thought of being a paleontologist. Like the sixth graders said having dinosaurs around is a lot better than glow chickens or chickens with tails, but I don’t see the point in bringing them back because they could they could eat us. One thing I can think of that could be useful with bringing back dinosaurs is for their meat because maybe one dinosaur could feed twenty families. Another thing is for medicine because maybe something in the dinosaur could be a pain killer or could kill cancer. Lastly, dinosaur’s skin could be used for clothing purposes. For scientists to bring dinosaurs back, I think the only way is to take blood from the mosquito preserved in the amber and to inject it into some type of egg. I think by altering the genes of the chicken won’t eventually turn it into a dinosaur, but make it some weird chicken type thing.

    1. I like your idea that maybe dinosaurs could hold the long awaited cure for cancer or be beneficial to us in some way. However also like you I don't see the point of bringing them back if with our general knowledge of them, they would most likely just eat us.

    2. It was a cool point to bring up that people could be able to eat dinosaur meat since I had never thought of that before. I also agree that dinosaurs should not be brought back though because I wouldn't want them running around and tearing buildings down.

    3. I agree with Jaylynn, I thought this video was enjoyable and interesting. I also agree with how the chicken won't turn into a dinosaur. Also, bringing back the dinosaurs back for their meat would be a great idea.

    4. I agree that bringing back the dinosaur could have some good purposes as you said, but trying to bring it back from a chicken does not sound like the way to do it. If we brought dinosaurs back I feel like something would go wrong and we'd have to just lock them up anyway.

    5. I'm glad that you were able to look at the bright side of bringing dinosaurs back. Personally, I wouldn't want to bring them back because they're just so big and scary. But if they could benefit us, then maybe we should support the creation of a Chicken-o-saurus.

    6. I agree with you on the fact that there would honestly be no point to bringing back the dinosaurs. In the end, they would probably end up eating us anyway.

  2. I thought the TED talk was very interesting including Jack Horner. I like how he bashed the book and the movie Jurassic Park by telling people that if you used the method used in Jurassic Park, you would not make dinosaurs. By finding a mosquito found in Amber or tree sap, then taking that DNA and copying it and putting it in an egg, all you would get is more mosquitoes. I also liked how Jack Horner and his team set out a project to collect as many dinosaur fossils to try to find DNA. Although they did not find DNA in the dozens of dinosaurs they found, Jack and his colleagues found B-Rex. This T-Rex was researched and examined very closely and they found never seen before things in dinosaurs. They found out the age it died (16), its gender (Female), and evidence of proteins. This speech was very well put and was very cool.

    1. In response to Maverick, I also agree with you that the TED talk was very interesting. Like you said, the speech was very well put and I think if the researchers find more dinosaurs, maybe they will eventually be able to find some DNA that’s useful.

    2. In response to Maverick, I too thought that it was funny in how Jack Horner was bashing Jurassic Park's ideas of recreating dinosaurs instead of scientifically speaking, copying the DNA blood from a mosquito will just create more mosquitos.

      Delete
    3. I also found it interesting and also think that if they look hard enough, they can find useful DNA. However, I don't really think that dinosaurs are best fit for the world today because it is completely different.

    4. I agree with Mav that Jack really destroyed Jurassic Park and the whole story. One of the most famous dinosaurs, the T-Rex, was discovered and they found many different things that have never been found in dinosaurs like the age it died.

    5. I also liked how he refer to Jurassic park a lot and how he found a t-rex and was able to determine its age. And I also agree the speech was very well put together.

  3. I found the TedTalk to be very interesting and entertaining because the man giving the lecture didn't lose my attention the entire sixteen minutes- a very big feat! In all honesty, I have never been very fascinated by dinosaurs; I enjoyed viewing their exhibits at museums, but I never dreamed of being a paleontologist. I was all about becoming an artist, which I now realize is not a suitable career option. But I digress. I didn’t care very much for Jurassic Park, I’ve never actually finished the entire movie. Dinosaurs just aren’t my thing. That being said, I do find it amazing how far technology has advanced to allow the construction of a “Chickenosaurus” or whatever they called it. The fact that scientists were able to extract real cells from ancient dinosaur bones is absolutely incredible. I would have thought that such samples were completely lost to time. But, as intriguing as the whole subject is, I wouldn't join the expedition. I’d rather work towards other facets of biology, like the taxonomy of new species or researching human evolution.

  4. Overall I found the video long, yet intriguing. It was interesting how he disproved the idea of creating dinosaurs from amber fossils, and it made sense that using that DNA would just create more mosquitos. It made me wonder, does DNA “expire”? I find the tampering and mixing of genes of different species to create a new strange (in his case glowing) organism cool, however something in me says it’s wrong, that animals are made just the way they need to be. I cannot see any reason to recreate a new breed of dinosaur, whether “jurassic park” is possible or not the warning rang true, don't revive a species if they won't fit into the environment and improve its ecosystem in some way. What’s the true purpose of creating the “cooler chicken”? Maybe it’s a waste of time and money and we should focus on more relevant areas such as curing cancer and other deadly diseases.

    1. I agree with you and the question you posed is one I have as well. Does DNA really break down? And how fast does it break down? I also agree with how you said "the animals are made just the way they need to be". Makeover wolves into Maltese is insane!!

  5. I thought the video was interesting but I personally never wanted to be a paleontologist. Creating a "Jurassic Park' would be possible, but very hard to do. It's amazing that they could find some heme inside of a very old dinosaur. It was funny when Jack Horner said that if they were to take some DNA out of a mosquito they would just end up with a bunch of mosquito's. Seeing a chicken-o-saurus in a zoo behind a big wall would be cool. I say that it would be cool behind a wall simply because I would not want to have a bunch of chicken dinosaur things running around.

  7. I think this TED talk was interesting in how our everyday birds are considered to be dinosaures. The most closest animal to a velociraptor that we still have is a chicken. In the TED talk the man said that a gene caused the birds to attach the bones of their arms together to create a wing, and they also resorbed their tails during their earlier stages of development. The reason for this is called Atavism Activation where there was once an ancestral characteristic in the bird but then it was changed by a gene. I think it's cool and funny in a way because scientists are figuring out different approaches with the chicken and turning it into a “Chicken-o-saurus.” The dinosaur like chicken would only serve as evidence that maybe we could alter our own traits to change how a human body develops. The "Chicken-o-saurus" would just be a weird preference in how actually dinosaurs may have looked. When I was a kid I always knew all these cool facts about dinosaurs and wanting to bring them back, but I never wanted to be a paleontologist. When Jurassic Park came out everyone loved the idea of creating dinosaurs and thought it was a smart idea. Although, in reality, copying blood of a dinosaur sucked out by a mosquito and trapped in amber will only create more mosquitos. Something I thought was interesting was that Jack Horner and his team found a different kind of T-Rex and called it "B-Rex." It was a female that died at the age of 16. They found this out by its cells that they found in her bones.

    1. I too found it pretty funny that the closest living animal to a velociraptor is a chicken because we think of velociraptors as vicious monsters that hunt down kids in museum kitchens, but we think of chickens as stupid, harmless farm animals.

    2. I agree that something interesting was Jack Horner and his team found something called the "B-Rex." This is interesting because shows a different kind of dinosaur to add on to list of certain kinds of dinosaurs found. This video gave me a good basic understanding of dinosaurs.

I've never seen the movie Jurassic Park or read the book, but I don't think it could happen. However, I thought the fossil evidence was very cool. I think it's really interesting how they extract cells from the fossils. I also think being part of the scientific research expedition would be really cool. 9. I think it’s very intriguing about studying dinosaur bones and trying to find DNA. I’ve always been interested in paleontology. Never did I actually want a pet dinosaur, though I loved the Clifford books, if that counts. I’ve seen the first Jurassic Park movie. It is an interesting theory and seems somewhat plausible. I don’t think it’s possible to make an exact copy of the extinct animal; I think a lot of mutations would occur. The whole process reminds me of how we talked about scientists trying to clone a mammoth in an elephant’s or bison’s body.
I do not believe in evolution; I believe God created every kind of animal and that mutations, the supposed evidence of evolution, came around because of the fall and have been twisted to fit into man’s description of how everything came to be. To me, evolution is man’s way of denying that there is a God who created everything. It says we, a complex organism, are merely a random collection of genes that came from nothing, and truly are not much different than animals, since we are part of the evolving process. But I believe that life has a purpose, far beyond the physical knowledge and scientific purposes. As for the fossil evidence, I don’t think they prove evolution, they prove that many different species existed. Yes, the structures are similar, but doesn’t mean they came from the same ancestor. I believe fossils are a result of the great flood. Since it occurred only 6,000 years ago, it would explain why some dinosaur bone remains still have blood vessels that aren’t dry. It explains why there are fossils on the peaks of the highest mountains. It explains how the animals and plant remains were fossilized still intact due to the heavy sediments in the water that the flood carried. Otherwise, wouldn’t weathering decompose it before it could get buried by millions of years of sediments?
Yes, I definitely would want to be part of the research expedition. I’m not sure what their research will lead to. I don’t think there is a place here for an artificial animal species, such as the chicken-o-saurus, although it would be cool to study and look at. If we let it in the wild, it could become an invasive species. I can’t help but think of all the drastic effects it could have, not only on ecosystems, but humanity.

  10. I was very surprised that scientists are able to tamper with chicken genes to someday produce mutate dinosaur-like birds. Though I have to say messing with nature that much seems unnatural. If chicken dinosaurs did exist what affect could it have on other species? Would they taste like chicken? Overall, I do not think the world would benefit from a real Jurassic Park because the dinosaurs would not be fit for the world today. I believe dinosaurs went extinct a reason and therefore should stay extinct.

  11. I found the video very insightful and educational. I also thought Jack Horner was very funny in explaining how he is trying to make a "chickenosaurus". It's interesting to learn about how a huge dinosaur can be related to a small chicken or pigeon. I was always interested in dinosaurs and there was a point when I wanted one to ride to school (even though I lived 3 houses away from the school). Of course, I also wanted Clifford the big red dog... Jurassic Park is another story, though. I was never interested in seeing dinosaurs kill people, maybe I was too chicken (ha, see what I did there?). But after I saw this TED talks, I need to see the movie or read the book. I think that the storyline itself is intriguing. I mean taking an amber encased mosquito, cloning the DNA, then injecting it into another egg is pretty impressive, but it doesn't seem possible. Horner isprobably correct about just creating more Mosquitos and trees. But the fossil evidence was amazing. To see a whole skeleton buried under the ground you walk on is mind blowing. I did think it was a good idea for them to try to find DNA, but I understood that it breaks down too fast. On the other hand though, the Hell Creek project was also impressive. How they found B-Rex and uses patterns to find it was a 16 year old dinosaur, which is cool and sad, and how they found out it was female because of the medullary tissue, which is what female birds have when they are pregnant. It also links birds to dinosaurs. I still can't believe that birds are living dinosaurs. Modern birds today are the avian dinosaurs and the old ones are called non avian. I also found Horner's hypothesis cool. It said that dinosaurs build nests, live in colonels, bring food to young, and travel in herds. I would love to be apart of creating " a poster chick for technology, entertainment, and design". In conclusion, I think we should make the chickenosaurus because not only would it help us advance our understanding of evolution, it would bring us one step closer to finding either why dinosaurs went extinct, or helping us find a way to bing them back.

  12. When I was in preschool, it was my biggest dream to someday become a paleontologist. I was obsessed with dinosaurs, reading about them and playing with figurines. I’ve since grown out of that dream, but I still found this video interesting. My favorite part was when he showed the embryo of the chicken foot compared to the Archaeopteryx because we had talked about that in class, so I understood what he was talking about. 13. I thought that this video was very interesting. Although I think that dinosaurs are very cool, I never wanted one when I was younger, because I thought that they would eat me. And being a paleontologist never crossed my mind. What I really got from this video was that we can't just take tree sap and make a dinosaur, because instead we would have made a mosquito. I loved this part of the video and how Jack brought a reference in on Jurassic Park. I also enjoyed the part when Jack talked about how they’re trying to find the gene that stops chickens tails from growing. When they find the gene, that will open many doors for the scientists.

  14. I never wanted to be a paleantologist. I think digging in the dirt would be kind of boring. This video, however, wasnt. But with dinosaurs, it would be unatural to bring them back. They went extinct and now humans have roamed the earth. What would have happened had dinosaurs remained. Would we be here? no probably not. Instead of challenging nature and trying to bring dinosaurs back we should focus on preserving the species that human are wiping out.

  15. I found this video very interesting because using chicken embryo to try to bring back the dinosaurs in fascinating. However I am not a fan of tampering with nature, like GMO foods. I really enjoyed when the comparison of the two embryos were presented. In conclusion, bringing back extinct organisms would not be a good idea. If they were, like we talked about in class a little bit, this organism would not be able to fit because today is a completely different world than millions of years ago.

  16. When I was younger I didn't know what a paleontologist was but now that I know about it I think it's somewhat cool. When I was younger I wasn't really thinking about dinosaurs that much but I'm sure I had some type of toys of a dinosaur or something like that. I thought this video was very informative because of all the scientific reasons he has to backup his claim of dinosaurs. The idea of a Chicken-o-saurus is kind of weird to think about because who would of thought 20 years ago we would ever have the technology to make this type of organism and even today it still seems impossible. The idea of recreating dinosaurs like the movie "Jurassic Park" would be really hard to do because scientists wouldn't be able to afford a mistake and they need the right technology. I don't think bringing back dinosaurs would be a good idea because there would be no real benefit to it and a person's tax money could be supporting this for no reason. This video informed me on dinosaurs and gave me a deeper understanding of them.

  17. I thought the TED talk was interesting to watch, but I’m not a huge fan of dinosaurs. Whenever we turned on Jurassic Park my reaction was just “oh this again”. I never really got into the idea of bringing back dinosaurs because even though they are supposedly social animals there is still the possibility that they can kill people and destroy many things like in Jurassic Park. I think it could be a possibility to bring back dinosaurs with the proper necessities, but I don’t think it is necessary to do so. They are an animal of the past, so why not just leave them in the past? When they showed and talked about the fossil evidence I thought was the best part. To see that fossils can make it through all those years and still be in relatively good condition with cells still inside the bones is extraordinary. I thought it was disappointing they didn't find any DNA, but being able to extract the cells was a plus. That way they can observe how different it was or how similar it still is to today's cells.

  18. I thought this video was very interesting. Prior to watching the Ted Talk, I had no idea that birds are actual dinosaurs. I knew they are somewhat related but I didn’t know that they are close enough in relation to make a Chicken-o-saurus. I thought it was very interesting that not too long ago many dinosaurs were found here in the United States. Going on a dinosaur dig is not exactly a life goal of mine, although some of the observations they made were very interesting to me. I thought that the part about the tiny little gene modifications in chickens’ hands and tails was the most interesting. It’s crazy to think that modifications so small in embryos can make such a huge difference in the formation of an organism. However, I’m not in favor of creating a Chicken-o-saurus. Personally, I don’t really agree with tampering with nature, and attempting to bring a dangerous species back, that has already died out, just doesn’t sound like a good idea.

  20. This video was very interesting. I never would want to be a paleontologist because sitting around for hours among hours to be digging around. The explanation they made on Jurassic park i thought helped me better understand the movie.I think its possible but is bringing back extinct animals? No not at all especially dinosaurs. The way it turned out in the movie of Jurassic park would be eventually the same way it would end up. With a chicken-o-Sauraus, somehow being able to live, I think it would not be good because eventually what we would do and tampering with genetic codes of living animals to breed dinosaurs, would come back to us in a negative way then resulting in us wishing to take back what we ourselves caused. But just like all things, the negatives will always out weigh the good. But that doesn't mean we can't give a shot at it.

  24. I always thought that one of the coolest jobs to have was being a paleontologist when I was younger. When I was about the age of 4-10 years old all I would do is play with my toy dinosaurs and go to museums and look at the giant dinosaur bones and be absolutely mesmerized by them. I have seen the movie jurassic park a few times and I usually watch it with my mom because it’s one of her favorite movies and every time we watch it together she tells me how when it first came out everyone who saw it was amazed at the fact that this kind of movie showed that it could be possible to recreate dinosaurs. The fossil evidence would not actually create a dinosaur because in the movie they put the DNA of the dinosaurs from the mosquito in frogs. This was a big mistake because frogs are amphibians and all the dinosaurs they created were reptiles. I found it interesting how they were able to find out that B-rex was a female because she had something inside of her bone that told scientists that she was pregnant. I don’t think I would want to be part of the scientific research expedition, even though I think I would enjoy it. I believe that we most likely aren’t going to be able to create a dinosaur in the near future.

  25. I would like to say I agree with the 6th graders, chickens are not cool. Why choose the chicken to be your dino bird when you can have something cool, like an eagle or vulture. Not only that, but alligators and crocodiles are direct descendants from dinosaurs, it would probably be easier to make a dinogator, seeing as you would have to find and reverse less genes. Not only that, but the Great White sharks are also descendants of the Megalodon, which is probably 2x bigger than a T-Rex and 100x (at least) bigger than any chicken. And, it would help the ecosystem, as I have stated in previous blogs. Until they choose a cooler and more practical species, I agree wholeheartedly with the 6th graders.

    1. I feel like all those species being made into dinosaurs would be chaotic. Right now, we're able to tame a majority of the animals you listed, but who knows if we could still do that if they were mixed with dinosaurs. Again, even though a dinogator would be 10X cooler it would also be 10X more dangerous. At least with a chicken, you get a feeble chicken-o-saur that you could laugh at as it runs around its cage.

  26. In regards to the TED talk, I thought it was very interesting to hear about all the different methods of evolutionary experimentation and the whole controversy about dinosaurs. When I was a little kid, I always liked to draw dinosaurs, but I never dreamed of being a paleontologist. Although, after hearing Jack Horner talk about the possibility of a chicken-o-saurus, it makes me realize how cool it would be to work in the biology field to explore and find new discoveries that could make history. Additionally, I thought it was really cool when they were explaining how they were able to extract dinosaur cells from the fossils because it shows you how much information can really be preserved in fossils. During the talk, I enjoyed the part where they were explaining the embryological structures of a hand of a chicken and a type of dinosaur allowing us to see how closely related they were in embryological stages. Overall, the video was very intriguing and I liked how he keep telling us that Jurassic Park was so unrealistic because I personally think the movie is really cheesy.

When he talked about how his colleague dumped a fossilized bone into acid, he said it so nonchalantly, but imagine how many people would disagree with this approach. Then he said they couldn’t get the dinosaur DNA quickly enough, it was deteriorating so fast, I was proud that they kept working, and didn't give up, all for those sixth graders. I don’t know if I would want a dino-chicken, on paper it sounds awesome, but it still scares me a bit.

  28. Although I have never really thought about being a paleontologist, I still find this research and information really interesting. Whenever I would watch Jurassic Park, I would always just watch but never really understand what was going on. So, hearing him talking about the movie cleared up my confusion. Also, the idea about bringing back dinosaurs with the help of chickens seems a little weird to me but very interesting at the same time. The research they have found is so cool to see and hear about because you never see anything like it. I wonder what it would be like to discover parts of a dinosaur? So many years those fossils have sat in the ground and to be the person to discover those fossils would be so incredibly cool! I could not imagine what that would be like to see so many bones of a creature that hasn't been around for so many years!

  29. I thought this video was very interesting and I think the stuff that was said in it could possibly happen in the near future. I liked how they were trying to recreate a new chicken dinosaur thing and have a real life Jurassic park it seems pretty likely at the rate we are going at right now. And I would not want to be a part of this research team because i could not stand being in the middle of nowhere in Montanan for a extended period of time. And i thought it was pretty cool they could extract 65 million year old cells from a bone the fact that this is even possible is really cool.

    1. I also agree that I would not want to be in that field of study, and it is also really cool that they could extract the really old cells.

  30. The video was so Interesting! I never really wanted to be a paleontologist before, even though when I was little I thought dinosaurs and evolution was really cool. I think it's so cool they alcohol possibly bring back dinosaurs using chickens. I never knew dinosaurs and chickens were that closely related. I have seen the movie Jurassic park but I doubt something as little as this experiment would get that out of control and big. Overall I think this is truly amazing and shows how far we have come with evolution and DNA since Charles Darwinnwas alive.

  31. I think that if we can extract cells from the bones of dinosaurs, then we will eventually come across some DNA. Although, remaking dinosaurs is probably not a good idea because the consequences are depicted in Jurassic Park. I would not want to go on an expedition to try and find the dinosaurs because there is no garentee that you will find anything. Even if one was found, there most likely won't be anything to get out of the bones. Because of that, I would not want to become a paleontologist.

  32. I found this video interesting at some points and boring at other points. The video was a little long but it did tell me things about fossils that I never knew. I found it funny that he said we dont need Jurassic park we have birds they are a new dino. I have never wanted to be a paleontologist and I still dont but this video did make paleontology seem more interesting. I have seen the movie jurassic park and I thought it was a pretty cool concept. It is not possible to do what they did in Jurassic park but it is still cool. I thought it was pretty cool that they were able extract dinosaur cells from a fossil but to me it really does not mean much unless they are making Jurassic world. I would not want to be part of a research expedition because looking at fossils is only fun for about 30 seconds and then I get bored. If we had a chicken-o-saurus I dont think the government would tell us because they know it was a waste of money.

    1. It is pretty cool that the lady was able to extract soft tissue and cells from a bone. It makes dinosaurs seem even more real knowing that they have found more than just bones and fossilized rock.

  33. I thought this video was very interesting because I think it is really cool that scientists think they can turn a chicken into a dinosaur. As a kid, I was never really that in to dinosaurs, but I've always thought they were pretty interesting. I actually did see Jurassic park and was intrigued by the ideas that it proposed. Although their method of recreating dinosaurs was proven impossible in the video, I do believe that scientists will be able to complete the task a different way considering all the technology we have now. However, I would not like to be a part of this particular research expedition; I'd rather be part of something that has more meaning and purpose.

  34. I thought this video was really interesting!! When I was little, I always want to be a paleontologist! I thought it would always be amazing to find bones! I remember digging in my backyard to try and find dinosaur bones; however, I never find one. I have never seen the movie or read the book Jurassic Park, but based on what he said about it I think I would find it interesting. I think the fossil evidence would be incredibly fascinating! Along with that, I think the fact that they took dinosaur cells from the fossils! That is almost mind blowing! If I were apart of scientific research I would definitely want to dig for them and extract bone marrow to find dinosaur cells! I will never forget all the times my grandma would take me to Chicago to the children's museum. I spent most of the time using the Brush to uncover the dinosaur bones. My grandma would literally have to pull me away from that area! Dinosaurs have always interested me and I find them so fascinating!

  35. I found this video kind of upsetting because scientists will never be able to create a dinosaur but also really cool that there are some ways too technically create a dinosaur by manipulating a chicken. When I was little I thought being a paleontologist would be fun but having a pet dinosaur was scary because it could eat me. His explanation of Jurassic Park killed my dreams of scientists one day creating a dinosaur from a petrified amber fossil when he said you would create a room full mosquitoes or trees. I thought the fossil evidence of birds and dinosaurs was exciting because by changing some genes around one could create the same teeth. Arms and tails as a dinosaur. An interesting part of this video was when scientists found cells in dinosaur bones, that is something I never thought possible. Being part of a dinosaur fossil excavation would be so awesome but probably a lot of hard and careful work. If scientists were able to make a Chicken-o-saurus it would probably only be in a zoo and never in the wild because it would destroy the ecosystem. Although creating a dinosaur wouldn't be as easy as finding dino DNA in an ancient mosquito it may one day be possible by tampering with genes of our modern day dinosaurs, birds.

  36. I thought that this TED talk was very interesting. I think that it is so awesome that the evolution of science can even allow us to do this. As much as I love Jurassic Park, I don't think that we will be able to recreate it just yet. It may be a possibility in the future when science has improved a bit more, but it will still be very challenging to complete. It would be interesting to see a chick-o-sourus in the zoo just because I would love to see how awesome it would be.

  37. I thought the video was interesting, a little long for my attention span though. Anyways, I think I liked to have been a paleontologist when I was little, but I don't remember. I do remember digging in my yard for worms and stuff, so I don't know if that counts. As a child, I prefered unicorns over dinosaurs because unicorns are magical, and a dinosaur would probably just go around and eat everyone. Regardless, It's still pretty disappointing to learn that we can't clone dinosaurs like in Jurassic Park. Speaking of Jurassic Park, I saw the movie often until my sister and I broke the VHS somehow when trying to put it into the VCR ourselves. Personally, I wouldn't want to be apart of this research expedition because this is an area of science I'm no longer interested in. I mean, it's fun to see, but it doesn't seem all too fun to do. Also, I think that any Chicken-o-saurus we make would be kind of lame because it's already a mild version of the dinosaur, and we, being the way we are, will take every precaution to make it, so it will be pretty far from cool. All I can imagine is this little chicken with a couple dinosaur features giving off a feeble roar, or whatever sounds a dinosaur makes. But if do accomplish to make some kind of Chicken-o-saurus, I can only imagine that we'll put them in zoos at some point.

  38. I thought that the Ted person meant well, but he made a really boring speech about how chickens are dinosaurs. I agree with him that you can't make a dinosaur out of blood from inside a mosquito but I did find it interesting that the lady found red blood cells in the dinosaur body. I am very glad that dinosaurs cannot be remade because they went extinct for a reason. We should not be meddling with the forces of nature.
As for me, I never wanted to be a paleontologist so I could care less whether or not a dinosaur is being created.

  39. This video was super cool! I think the scientific process they went through to try to find the best way to make a dinosaur is interesting, especially since they started with trying to make the dinosaur like they did in Jurassic Park. I think that speaks for how much our media impacts our view of science and scientific processes. When that failed, though, they started to think of evolution and how they could use that, which I also think is pretty cool. I'm sure animal rights activists would have a field day with what that guy is doing to chickens, but I digress. I'm curious to know if this is actually something we'll hear about in the future, or if they'll never reach a solid conclusion and we'll never have our chicken-o-saurus.

    1. I agree that our media really does have a big impact on our society such as Jurassic park might have influenced the scientists to try and bring back the dinosaurs. Some movies might not seem like it could be possible but that's what I thought with Jurassic park, but now it's happening. I can't possibly think what scientists might try to tackle next after the dinosaurs but I hope it's interesting.

    2. I agree, our media can have a huge impact on pretty much everything but in this case, it impacted science the most. Jurassic Park is a well known movie series and it's amazing how we may be able to see it come to life.

  40. In my opinion the TED talk was pretty interesting. I don't think I would ever be paleontologist because honestly I don't think it sounds like the right thing for me. Adding on to that, I've never seen Jurrassic Park because I just feel like it wouldn't really interest me, and from what I've heard it's pretty unrealistic.
I never thought about being a paleontologist because I thought it'd be boring. I have seen the Jurassic Park movie. Apparently taking DNA from a mosquito would only make more Mosquitos instead of dinosaurs. When the two embryos were being compared that was kind of cool. In my opinion it would be a bad idea to make a chicken-o-saurus because honestly, we don't need it and it would just be asking for trouble.

  41. I've never been super into dinosaurs, but I've always thought that they were pretty interesting. This video helps get that point across. Currently I'm reading The Lost World in the Jurassic park series and then same ideas come across in each. It never came to me that it was possible to do so much with things like gene modifications. Although the chicken-o-saurus looks a bit ridiculous, like said, still makes for a huge step in technology with evolution.

  42. First off, I didn’t mind the fact that the video was a little lengthy. I actually found it very interesting overall. I think the idea of a chicken dinosaur thing is cool, but who wouldn’t? Realistically I think this will just be another manmade disaster if the idea is ever brought to life. When I was little I loved to go to the creek in our neighborhood with those little hand shovels and excavate “fossils” from the mud. Aka plastic bottles, rocks, and worms. My neighbor who I actually did this with had a dog named Dino (dee-no) but we had a game in which we called him Dino(like dino-saur) and we had to run away from him while he chased us in her yard. It sounds really ridiculous once I actually write it down and look back at it. Moving on to the next question, I have never ever seen the movie Jurassic Park. Ever. It’s definitely possible that I actually have but I fell asleep during it, which happens often with me. I think that maybe we don’t have the right technology to make this possible quite yet, and even if we did I wouldn’t want to be a part of it at all. I think a chicken dinosaur wouldn’t be that exciting, honestly. I mean sure, the process of dinosaur-izing it might be cool, but what would we do with it afterwards? Put it in petting zoos? Overall this was a very interesting video that I definitely enjoyed watching.

    1. I also didn't mind the length of the video! I was completely intrigued. That game that you played when you were little sounds adorable! My neighbors and I would always look under big rocks to see if we could find bugs, and if we found big ones we would pretend it was a big scientific find! And you make some good points about what would we do with the Chick-o-saurus.

    2. I agree that we wouldn't have any use for the chicken-saurus. I feel like there are so many other areas of study we could be putting money into that help people rather than making an artificial dinosaur with no purpose.

  43. I've always found dinosaurs really cool but never thought of having one as a pet because as a kid I knew how dangerous they can be. I have seen the movie Jurassic Park (1 and 2) and I thought as a kid that it might be possible but now I see that it is closer to reality because of our further knowledge in genetics and DNA. Even though dinosaurs are really cool I just would not like to study them because I would have a scientific understanding of it and not the child understanding of it. It would be a lot more fun to look at a dinosaur with the mind of a child than the mind of a scientist. You could make up things as a child but you would know the facts as a scientist. Lastly, the chicken dinosaur seems a little off, but the large step we took in evolution from when Jurassic park came out and now might actually make Jurassic world seem possible.

  44. I thought this video was incredible! Jack Horner did a great job of making the talk interesting and easy to understand! I have seen the movie Jurassic Park, and I always wondered if someday that could happen! And this video made it seem possible, maybe not with Mosquitoes though! Also, I had my fingers crossed that he was going to say they found DNA in the fossils, but even just the cells are amazing! I think it would be an experience of a lifetime to be part of the research expedition.Lastly, if I had a Chicken-o-saurus, I think I would create a Chicken-o-saurus Park and let everyone come see them. Hopefully it wouldn’t end like Jurassic Park!

  45. The video was very interesting. I've never had much interest in dinosaurs or paleontology, but I do enjoy hearing about the discoveries and ideas of those who do. I've seen Jurassic Park but I knew that it was purely science fiction. However, what I didn't know was that there is still soft tissue preserved in dinosaur skeletons found today. The fact that we have the technology to observe dinosaur arteries and bone tissues is astounding, yet also slightly disappointing that there isn't DNA preserved within the cells we find. In my opinion, the search should stop there. Now that we know it is impossible to recreate dinosaurs, there is no point to continue trying. Although the classifier's adventure with chicken embryos is interesting it is a little ridiculous. We have no need or use for a dinosaur - especially not for a 1/2 dinosaur that just looks like a chicken with a tail and claws - other than entertainment. There is no logical reason to spend millions creating these artificial creatures when there are plenty of other subjects of study to pour money into that would benefit the human species.

  46. The TED talk was pretty interesting. Although it would be cool to study dinosaurs I don't think I would ever want to be a paleontologist. I have been into dinosaurs since I was little and always found them amazing. Although I did not know much about them they just looked cool. I have seen the movie Jurassic Park and I used to think it was just a fantasy in someones head, but now it looks not so science fiction anymore. It would be cool to have dinosaurs back but it would also be very dangerous. If we can't control them they could go on a rampage a kill a lot of people. It was cool that they were able to extract DNA from the dinosaurs bones and possibly use it to create a dinosaur but I would not want to be part of that team because learning about dinosaurs wouldn't be as fun as just knowing the little important things that a kid would know. When I think of dinosaurs I think of me as a little kid. I would like that to stay the same when I'm older. Lastly, in my opinion I would not know what to do with the Chicken-o-saurus, it would be a new species that we may know little to nothing about. It could be dangerous. I think we should study it and see if it is hostile towards humans and other animals. If it isn't then it would be fine to see what it does in the wild for a few days.

  47. Overall, I thought the information in this video was very interesting, when I was little I always thought that dinosaurs where very cool animals, but I never thought of having one as a pet. Though I have never read nor seen the movie Jurassic Park, I think the idea is clever but wouldn’t necessarily work. In my opinion, I agree that if you want to find the DNA of a dinosaur you must go to the dinosaur, but this hasn’t been able to work. I also think that the evidence fossils provide for us gives quality information to understand animals in another way. They help show you all the animals and plants that have lived in the past. Personally I find it fascinating that we are able to extract dinosaur cells from fossils, being able to do this can help scientist understand these animals or plants that onced lived. I would find being apart of scientific research expedition would be a lot of fun and a very great learning experience to be apart of. I feel there isn’t much of a need for a Chicken-o-saurus, but like stated in the video it could teach children about
    evolutionary biology and developmental biology.

  48. The fact that we actually have the power to create a dinosaur is amazing! I love the idea of being able to re create dinosaurs. After thinking about how cool it would be I realized how big of an effect this would have on the ecosystem though. Dinosaurs could shakes things up but in a bad way, they would most likely become the top predator and this would cause big problems in the food chain leading to other animals becoming extinct. But then we would have dinosaurs on the planet again which hasn't really been a big dream for me but it would be for m little sister who was obsessed with dinosaurs as a little kid! When I watched Jurassic park for the first time (I think I was 9), I never really thought that it would be possible to actually do something like that but it actually is. I'm all for taking some of the blood from the mosquito and creating dinosaurs but I don't think we will be able to do this anytime soon with all the super religious people saying It's not right to create life. Although problems could occur, I'm still for it.

  49. As a kid I was never too interested in Dinosaurs, but this video did keep me interested. I have seen bits and pieces of Jurassic Park and all in all I think they have done a good job with it even though as stated in the video it isn't possible I liked how the guy explained what the scientists were doing but really I think it is all pretty ridiculous. I don't understand why people have been trying to create dinosaurs for so long. Are they really worth it? Also I will say it is a bit worrying to think about what would happen if we did let dinosaurs roam the earth. Overall I think its cool to dream but I think we should face facts and put the dinosaur making to rest.

  50. I feel that the climate change is really scary and we need to do something about it soon. The dramatic weather has caused why too much damage to people's homes and cost us way too much money also. Thankfully we are doing something about this now, and we are making efforts to help reduce the pollution and harmful emissions. Personally I am going to try and do my part in reducing pollutants by turning of lights and making sure not to leave water running to long.
