Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 looks through the Horsehead Nebula in a uniquely detailed infrared image. A classic target of astronomy, the nebula normally appears dark against a bright background, but Hubble penetrates the shroud of interstellar dust and gas.
While I love all the pictures of Earth and other planets, the Horsehead Nebula picture is definitely my favorite. When looking at this image, I can truly imagine stars and other galaxies coming into existence. Plus I love how it looks like the Nebula is waving at the Hubble Telescope.
Look at all of the images and pick your favorite. Write a brief comment about why you chose the image that you did. There are tons of other images out there, so if you find another Hubble Telescope image that you like better, please include the URL of where you found it. You do not need to comment on anyone else's post, but you may comment on the National Geographic website if you would like to.
I chose this image because I find it so beautiful and it incorporates all the colors of the rainbow.

My favorite picture from the Hubble Telescope would have to be number 40, Cassiopeia A. This picture shows so much color that I never knew could be in space. It is an explosion of color from a titanic stellar explosion.
ReplyDeleteI agree I thought that space was black and dark but this shows that it isn't.
DeleteUnder the Wing
ReplyDeleteThe Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), one of the Milky Way’s closest neighbors, appears as a Technicolor swirl in this composite image. The SMC is technically a dwarf galaxy, but it’s so bright the unaided eye can see it from the Southern Hemisphere and areas near the Equator. New observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory—a space telescope launched by NASA in 1999—of the SMC’s “Wing” region are our first glimpse of x-ray emissions from young stars similar to our sun outside the Milky Way
I chose the image of the Small Magellanic Cloud because I love the contrast of colors and how it appears to be never ending. It looks like you can go through the center of it into a different part of this dwarf galaxy, that contains lighter colors and still beautiful. Overall, I feel many people forget about the beauty in space compared to the beauty we have on Earth, but this picture shows how beautiful space is and how it is able to look “fake” to one.

After looking over the pictures many times I find that my favorite is the Monkey Head Nebula. It is filled with such mesmerizing colors and I just think it's beautiful. I also found it fascinating how you can pick out the little monkey heads that protrude from the wave of colors and stars. Apparently it is found within the Orion constellation, which as far as I know is very well known. Compared to many of the other nebulas, this one is fairly close to us. It's 6,400 light years away, compared to some others who are 40 or 50 thousand away. It was hard choosing a favorite considering how unique each individual picture is.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the Monkey head Nebula was really cool to see, especially the different colors and shapes.
DeleteMy favorite images was the Cosmic Fireworks. On the left side of the image, the colors are orange and black, and on the right side of the image, the color is blue and a hint of white. This images to me shows a fight against the good and the evil. The evil being the orange and black, and the good being the blue and white. I also liked the contrast of the colors.
ReplyDeleteI like the Happy birthday Hubble picture because it really shows the true nature of space. I like all the colors it shows, it is not as dark as i picture space. There is so many stars in this picture it makes me think there is a whole n
ReplyDeleteother world out there
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is image 34, “Helix Nebula”. I like it because of its close resemblance to a human eye. Because of this appearance, it seems it would be a perfect idea for a story which would center around the man in the sky who opened his eye. Also, I think it is interesting how such an image could be formed in nature, like it happened on a coincidence.
My favorite image was the M100 Galactic Nucleus which was number twenty five. I think it is so amazing that it a swirl in space consists of billions of stars! I also like how the colors change from a dark blue on the outside to a light purple in the center of the swirl.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite image that the telescope captured was image number 38. This picture is called "Whirlpool Galaxy" as it looks like a giant whirlpool, or a seashell. The picture has different colors that contrast giving it a vary rich texture. The contrasting color scheme also adds depth to the image were the lighter colors pop out.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite picture taken by the Hubble Telescope is Saturn's parade of moons, number 26. I like this picture because it captures the whole planet and it's moons clearly. There were many other cool pictures but this was my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Hubble Telescope looks really cool as well. The picture captured my eye.
DeleteMy favorite photo is the Cat’s Eye Nebula, number 8. It pops out so much, and when things by nature look like something else, they grab my attention. Also, the “bubbles” and surrounding circles line up perfectly. The light from the nebula looks like it's fading away. It’s quite unique.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite image is Under the Wings because of the swirls and sparkles of color. The picture really intrigued me, which is also why I liked it.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite image was the Eerie Fog(12). The image is a combination of many shades of dark blue, purple and violet. In the description of the image, it said that the fog is like a nursery for newborn stars which is kind of cool. I also liked this image because the fog forms an abstract heart shape.
ReplyDeleteIt was so hard to decide, because they're all so beautiful, but my favorite image has to be the one entitled "Galactic Waltz". All the colors go so well together, with the light blue and pearl white. I also adore how the spiral starts compact and goes into a single strand. Not only is it beautiful, but it's very unique.
ReplyDeletePersonally, the Under the Wing shot was my favorite. The way it captures so many different colors is breathtaking. I especially love the purples that show up because there are so many different varieties. It almost looks like it could be encompassing itself and caving in. It really is just beautiful shot that captures so many colors.
ReplyDelete31 is defiantly the best, its a contrast of colors speckled with bright blue stars. I also like how the clouds seem to engulf the entire sky.
ReplyDeleteI liked the Extreme Deep Field View because it shows how expansive our universe is. You can see may galaxies nearby and far away, but they all look like stars. I think it's amazing that the Hubble can capture all of these pictures to help us learn about the universe.
ReplyDeletehttp://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/03/150316-50-great-images-from-the-hubble-space-telescope/#/hubble-11-extreme-deep-field-fornax-1080v.jpg
ReplyDeleteFor my blog response I chose 2 photos because I couldn’t choose between the two. I chose Celestial wings (photo 9), and Cosmic Landscape (photo 35). The reason I chose Celestial wings is because it resembles a butterfly or the wings of an angel and I just found it remarkable paired with the dusty reds and pearly whites all in the middle of blackness. The reason I chose Cosmic Landscape was the appearance of a landscape photo on earth, with muddy red swirls as the ground jaggedly aligned beneath the startling blue ¨sky¨, the color contrast really stood out to me.
My favorite image was number 48, "Cosmic Collision" I like this image because it shows us how close yet how far away we truly are from each galaxy.
ReplyDeletehttp://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/03/150316-50-great-images-from-the-hubble-space-telescope/#/hubble-48-mice-colliding-galaxies-1920.jpg
My favorite one was number 5 Stellar Tumult because it is filled with color. Also, it is very spead out and I cannot even imgine how big it must actually be.http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/03/150316-50-great-images-from-the-hubble-space-telescope/#/hubble-05-carina-nebula-center-mosaic-1920.jpg
ReplyDeleteMy favorite picture is "Celestial Wings", or number 7. There's something about the way it looks like a collision between the shapes that makes it really interesting.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Hunter, I see the shapes too in how really amazing space can prove to be with just a mixture of different aspects can change anything in how we look upon it.
DeleteOut of all the pictures, the Echo of Light is easily my favorite. To me it really catches my eye with the multiple bright colors and circles. It almost looks like you are looking through a tunnel because it is all dark and funneled until you reach the bright light at the end.
ReplyDeletehttp://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/03/150316-50-great-images-from-the-hubble-space-telescope/#/hubble-31-30-doradus-composite-1080v.jpg\
ReplyDeleteI liked the Cosmic Fireworks image just because the colors look so cool just like a real firework.
There were some amazing images! I had three that I thought were incredible, but I think my top one was the "Helix Nebula". It looked like an eyeball to me and it was just really breathtaking!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to choose one picture that is my favorite because they are so unique and cool. But, if I had to chose, I would say "under the wing" was super cool because it has so many beautiful colors all around the picture. It's hard to believe you can capture something so amazing and unique like the under the wing shot.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite image was definitely the "Crab Nebula" (37) because it looks like a hole in a coral reef, and coral reefs are pretty.
ReplyDeleteIt was hard to choose one out of the big collection of beautiful photographs; but, if I were to pick a favorite it would be the "Pillars of Creation Revisited" you could see these blinding stars through the expansion of space, this made me question how many stars there were in that photograph and even the greatest possibility of more just like them. It was a night and day difference comparing to the original photo taken. I think it's fascinating how our space is always growing and changing and I really love these pictures and think that Hubble helps us connect to our universe.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite looking picture out of the 51 is number 15 called the Omega Centauri Panorama. The reason I like this image is because it shows a to of different stars with different colors and it ends up to look really cool. There are some stars that pop out in front and are very big, while others kind of fade in the background and are smaller. The website says that it shows over 100,000 stars all in the same picture. The Omega Centauri is a massive globular cluster containing nearly 2 million stars. The Omega Centauri Panorama caught my eye right away.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite image was Stellar Tumult number 5. This image looked like an amazing mixture of colors and swirls. The image was caused by the birth and death of stars. That is another reason why I like it because it shows what amazing wonders can happen when something like a star is born of dies.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this picture I immediately was drawn by colors! It honestly looks fake, but to know that it's real is so awesome! These pictures are all amazing but this is my favorite!http://blogs.britannica.com/2011/05/photographing-the-final-frontierhubble-space-telescope/
ReplyDeletehttp://news.nationalgeographic.com/content/dam/news/2015/03/hubble/hubble-05-carina-nebula-center-mosaic-1920.adapt.1900.1.jpg
ReplyDeleteMy favorite picture was the Stellar Tumult because of its gorgeous fall like colors of yellow, orange, and red. I normally associate the galaxy with blues and purples, so it's a very unique image. Also, the color pallet oddly reminded me of Michael Angelo's paintings, probably because they came up in a recent episode of Arrested Development.
My favorite image was number 7 titled “Under the Wing”. I think this displays all of the possible colors of our universe and allows us to see a great amount of depth.
ReplyDeleteFor me, seeing the picture labeled "Near and Far" caught my attention and made me stare at it for a few minutes, ruminating on how vast and diverse space really is. I counted about 875 stars in the picture... just kidding! There was no way that one could sit their and count the number of stars, galaxies and other stellar objects in the picture. It puts into fact how tiny our pathetic sphere of mud is in comparison to the rest of outer space. The picture makes one think that there is something way bigger that we are apart of. Personally, the picture is the most bland of the ten but I appreciated the concept that it portrayed.( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
ReplyDeleteI chose image 34 titled Helix Nebula. I was interested by all the colors blending together. I also was intrigued by the fact that it is one of the closest planetary Nebulas to Earth.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/images/162284main_image_feature_693_ys_full.jpg. This one is defiantly my favorite. I love all the colors. It kind reminds me of heaven. Like your going from space into heaven. Its absolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite out of the pictures was Under the Wing because it shows that space is not just an expansion of darkness its actually full of magnificent colors, galaxy's, and mystery the picture shows that you never know what you will find until you look.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Stellar Tumult. While it is obviously one of the most eye-catching pictures due to the various colors that jump out at you, the reason I liked this picture best was because it showed star death and star birth combined. That concept was cool to me and really stood out amongst all the other pictures.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite picture was number nine because it reminds me of an hourglass. Also, the colors presented are beautiful. There is so much more outside our universe that we haven't even discovered yet. We have only reached the tip of the iceberg.
ReplyDeleteAll of the Hubble telescope images were so amazing one of my favorites was Crab Nebula because in the center it looks like a bunch of seaweed in a lake. It is such a strange and beautiful picture that makes you forget how massive it is. What I find most interesting about these pictures is that for the time it takes for light to hit the telescope from deep space all of those pictures look completely different now, what were seeing is from millions of years in the past.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite image was Under the Wing. I chose this image because it really stood out to me. I liked all the colors and different shapes and lines in the photo. The cool thing about this was that this a cloud. Overall, this was my favorite picture.
I chose image 3, Echo of Light. I loved how the red circle appeared and gave the picture color and a vibrant feel. This picture was taken in 2002 over a couple months. The picture is of a dust balloon, but really it was the star's blasting light expanding, that made the dust cloud appear.
ReplyDeleteI loved all of the pictures, but if I had to pick one I would probably pick the "Hats Off" picture. I really liked this one because it puts a lot of things into perspective for me. This picture showed how powerful yet how beautiful the universe is. This also opened up my perspective on what space really was. Usually when I think of space I think of darkness and silence. This picture shows how colorful and bright the universe really is.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Crab Nebula because its something I would imagine in like a Science fiction kind of movie. It's amazing that such an amazing and beautiful event can be seen by anyone because of the Hubble telescope and it's also amazing that something you might see in a fictional story is real.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.popsugar.com/tech/photo-gallery/25246142/image/25246161/Hubble-Telescope-Discovers-New-Star-Cluster I have chosen this image of space by the Hubble Telescope because it reminds me of Earth. All the clusters of stars are the lights in cities at night, and blue is representing our oceans. How there might just be life beyond our solar system.

ReplyDeleteThough some caught my eyes more than others,it was hard to pick my favorite, but I came to love stellar tumult. This picture caught the star birth and stardeath and it blew me away. The intense colors with the complexity that this picture contains is amazing. It reminded me of a brilliant Renaissance peace, but I don’t think any human could recreate a piece so beautiful and intense yet with such tranquil vibe.
My favorite picture out of the fifty was number 15. This is called the omega centauri panorama. I think this one is so cool because of all the colors of the stars. From earth we see stars as white or yellow, but in this picture you can truly see all the colors.
ReplyDeleteOf all the photos, I liked 24 the best. There's something about the richness of the colors that just draws my eye inward. I agree with everyone else saying that they look too perfect to be real...but I guess that's the absolute beauty of space.
ReplyDelete"Hats Off"
ReplyDeleteI chose this image because I think it's awesome how extensive space it. In space, a little star can explode and make a ring so big it looks like a pancake. That's hard to imagine on Earth because we've never experienced anything even near that kind of space. Pretty cool.
Despite it’s supposed “uncool” appearance, my favorite image will always be of the Hubble Extreme Deep Field View (Number 11). It is the deepest space image we have ever taken, because, it you were to look where they got that image from, it’s just a dark patch of sky. All of those galaxies are so far away that it took years to photograph them, and for me, that is so awesome that we can constantly be expanding our view and looking for new things in the universe.
ReplyDelete"Cygnus Loop Supernova"
ReplyDeleteI chose this image because it reminds me of a face. Although it really is just gas, I do believe it's some sign of extraterrestrial life. I also like how it occurred 15000 years ago, which shows how our eyes don't see anything instantly.
http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2011/17/image/a/
ReplyDeleteI chose Pandoras cluster. The giant galaxy cluster was the result of a simultaneous pile-up of at least four separate, smaller galaxy clusters. The crash took place over a span of 350 million years. The galaxies make up about 5% of its mass with 20% coming from gas and the last 75% from the dark matter surrounding it.

ReplyDeleteI liked this one the best because it looks so perfect. I love how it looks so unrealistic, yet it is real. They explain is as a "Technicolor Swirl" and I think that beautifully describes it.
i chose the "Extreme deep field view"(11) because in that shot there are thousands of galaxies and there might even be a planet or two that harbor life. And i like how it shows galaxies that are 13.2 billion years old, and the universe is 13.5 billion years old.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is number 45, the monkey head. It shows how large space is, and the amazing things that have been created.
ReplyDeleteI think "Under the Wing" is my favorite. It has such a vast amount of colors (especially different shades of purple) that it looks absolutely beautiful. The middle of the picture especially reminds me of the Aurora Borealis, with it's blue/teal shades. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/content/dam/news/2015/03/hubble/hubble-02-centaurus-a-1080v.adapt.676.1.jpg
ReplyDeleteI chose the celestial wings picture because it doesn't even look real. I love these pictures because I like to imagine what it would be like to be out there near these other galaxies to see for myself just how amazing they are. This one is the most beautiful one to me because it looks so much like a butterfly in space.
ReplyDelete
