"For the Benefit and the Enjoyment of the People"
This past Saturday would have been Theodore Roosevelt's 160th birthday. Because I am a national park junkie and I have a passion for conservation, Theodore Roosevelt is definitely my favorite president. My husband is an APUSH teacher and he agrees with me that TR is pretty awesome. Using his power as president to protect wildlife and public lands, he created the United States Forest Service and established 150 national forests. Additionally, he established 4 national game preserves, 5 national parks, 18 national monuments and 51 federal bird reserves. While he was president, he protected almost 230 million acres of public land.
Clearly, we are far past the ecology unit and conservation really has nothing to do with enzymes and digestion. However, I couldn't resist the chance to wish my favorite president Happy Birthday. This week for your assignment, you have some options:
1. Who is your favorite president and why? Provide facts, figures and end your blog post with the website where you found your information
2. What is your favorite national park and why? Some of you have been to many of our national parks. Which is your favorite? What makes it different? How long has it been a national park? Please include the website at the end of the blog post that links to this national park.
3. Legacy, National Monuments and Politics In 2017, President Trump significantly reduced the amount of land set aside for two national monuments in Utah, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. What do you think? Is President Trump ruining the legacy set aside by other presidents? How do Presidents set aside land for National Monuments? How does this relate to legacy? What is legacy? Again, be sure to support your post with facts, figures and a website at the end of your post.
Pick one of the three above and write a scholarly paragraph. Also please comment on at least one of your peers posts'.
My grandparents have always had a love for outdoor activities such as; camping, hiking, biking and everything in between. While I didn't necessarily inherit the fulfillment that come along with being outdoors, I do really enjoy visiting national parks. My personal favorite has been the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, which is located in southwest New Mexico. I've been multiple times, since I was in New Mexico to visit my grandparents anyways, but it still amazes me every time I have the opportunity to see the fascinating park. What I love about this national park, is the fact that it's made up of entirely rocks and sand. While that doesn't sound to aesthetically pleasing, it truly is so beautiful. One thing I also want to mention is, the rich history of this national park. For thousands of years, nomads used the caves within the Gila River as temporary shelter. But in the late 1200's, the people of the Mongol tribe decided to take permanent residency and built rooms, crafted pottery, and raised their children within the cliff dwellings. While I was exploring one of the caves, I even saw some drawings and symbols on the walls, giving me a glimpse of the past. The Gila Cliff Dwellings national park was established in November 16th, 1907.

That park sounds so cool! I've never heard of it before.
DeleteVery nicely written paragraph, The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Park sounds very interesting!
DeleteI love your paragraph! I like how you included some background on your family in the beginning!
DeleteThis seems like a beautiful and cool park to visit!
DeleteMy favorite president is Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln was born in a small log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the 16th president for the United States, and was most famous for abolishing slavery and giving his "Four score, and seven years ago..." speech. He is my favorite because he was the one who abolished slavery, and I think slavery is really stupid and no one should be treated like that just because of their skin color. We're all just humans in the end, regardless of what we look like.
ReplyDeleteLincoln is one of my favorites too.
DeleteI agree with you on the topic that slavery is stupid and that no one should be treated that way. He is my favorite too.
DeletePersonally I don’t really pay attention when we learn about our country’s history and when we learn about politics. I think Abraham Lincoln is my favorite president because he took action towards ending slavery. I am a big fan of equality no matter who you are so the idea of slavery hurts me. Abraham Lincoln became the 16th president on November 6 1860. Shortly after he carried the people through the Civil War. In 1863 he declared the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in 10 states(the states still in rebellion). This gave freedom to those slaves. During the last two years of his life he welcomed African Americans as visitors and friends in a way no president had done before. This shows his kindness towards those who may have been targets. On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot by an advocate of slavery in Ford’s Theatre in Washington and then died the next morning. Although his death was tragic, many people remember and continue to remember all the good he brought to America. I’m sure many would agree that he left such an impact on our country. I found my information on this website: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Abraham-Lincoln
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that it was amazing what he did to end slavery.
DeleteAgreed, and not only what he did to end slavery, but what he did to set an example for the rest of the American people and change the momentum of our country's racism.
DeleteMy favorite president is Abraham Lincoln, because of the changes he made and the right decisions he took. Abraham became president in 1861 and by 1863 he had managed to pass the Emancipation Proclamation setting all slaves free. He was born in 1809 and his mother died when he was ten. Abraham and his family moved to the wild country where there was many animals such as bears, wolves, and other forest animals. In 1864 he won reelection but many people did not approve of him because of what he did in and after the Civil War. The southern states did not agree with Lincoln but they had lost the war, although they lost the war some were not done yet and this showed on April 14 1865 when Abraham was assassinated at a theater by John Wilkes Booth. It was a tragedy to know that a man that could have done even more to change our country was killed because people were too lazy to do their own work that they wanted slaves. I got my information from, https://www.whitehouse.gov/about-the-white-house/presidents/abraham-lincoln/
ReplyDeleteI think Abraham was a very important president and made plenty of impact. I can see why you chose him and I agree.
DeleteMy favorite president is Barack Obama. Obama was the 44th president of the United States, and the very first African-American president. He served for two terms, 2008-2016. He is my favorite president because of his amazing achievements as an African-American, which set a big example and minimized racism or the usual picture of Blacks. “While living with his grandparents, Obama enrolled in the esteemed Punahou Academy, He excelled in basketball and graduated with academic honors in 1979. As one of only three black students at the school, Obama became conscious of racism and what it meant to be African-American.” *, This quote shows how much he was able to achieve, while not even living with his parents and also not being close with his father at all as he left early, and was divorced later on. This is incredible and obviously changed a lot about the thoughts people had on African-Americans, as America used to be much more racist than it is nowadays. Besides, have you ever seen him in commercials or on certain speeches? He is a pretty cool, and funny guy.

Noah,
DeleteBarak Obama was in the news this morning. I am glad that you picked him.
My favorite president is probably Ronald Reagan. He was a pretty normal person and even grew up in Dixon Illinois. Before he was the president, he appeared in over 50 movies due to his career as an actor. He took office in 1981 and served two terms as president. During his time in office he survived an assassination attempt and was partially credited with the end of the cold war. Reagan strengthened the U.S economy and aided in the deconstruction of the Berlin wall. Overall, President Reagan was a very important President and was essential in shaping the United States and the World as we know it today.

Hannah,
DeleteMr. Wilbrandt loves President Reagan. He always hangs a Ronald Reagan calendar in his classroom.
My favorite president is Donald John Trump. He was born on June 14th, 1946 in New York. Trump defeated the runner up, Hilary Clinton, and became the 45th president of the United Sates. One thing that makes him my favorite is that he says whatever he wants, and in few words. I also agree with a his ideas, but some don't get passes through legislation. One example of this would be getting rid of the ACA or Affordable Care Act. However, he signed an executive order so he could get rid of the ACA without congresses approval. Trump has also reduced unemployment tremendously. All the while doing his best to accomplish what he told the people he would do before election.

When I first saw this post I had a significant emotional response (Please don't make any assumptions about my political alignment, I'm not writing for the purpose of dividing but rather sharing some interesting thoughts). My own personal opinions about a current event and the emotional response I had got me thinking about the power of historical hindsight. A prime example of historical hindsight in its prime is the Titanic. It is very easy to view the crew of the Titanic and the nearby Californian, which could have saved very many lives, as dumb. While some of the decisions are questionable, we have more than 100 years of hindsight to think about what the crew could have done to save themselves and the passengers. A fictional example that deals with hindsight in a shorter time frame is the movie "Sully". The main character in the film was facing charges for landing a plane with a broken part (forgive the vague details, just pulling this out of my memory) in the Hudson River, damaging it. The charges were backed by a simulation of pilots. Sully explains that the difference between the simulation and the real situation is that in the simulation, they know exactly what is happening and react immediately. This is a great example because those participating in the simulation have had a relatively long amount of time to become knowledgeable about the facts and form an objective solution to a subjective problem. But I digress. My point is, I'm interested in how the reputation of recent and current presidents will change over time. Older presidents, like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, have had a very long amount of time for their less admirable qualities, if they have any, to be forgotten and unimportant. (I don't mean to undermine any accomplishments of these men, just examples.) With that in mind, I wonder at what point will people with all opinions and perspectives will be able to put away all the emotions and evaluate a man as controversial as Donald Trump objectively. I don't have any conclusive ending, just some miscellaneous thoughts that I had.
DeleteHe's cool
DeleteMy favorite national park in Yosemite. I know that's a common answer but it's a really interesting place to me. One thing that makes Yosemite stand out from other national parks is the fact that it contains Lyell Glacier which is not only the largest glacier in the park but also one of the few glaciers that still remains in Sierra Nevada to this day. It also has sequoia trees that are honestly crazy beautiful. Something about the park that I as an individual am drawn in by is Vernal Falls. It's one of the most beautiful natural creations to me and the fact that it is being preserved and not being destroyed by humans as most of nature is makes me happy. It has been a national park since October 1st 1890.

I love Yosemite. We went there two years ago and it will always be one of my favorites. It is unreal.
DeleteIve never heard if Yosemite but I looked it up and it looks pretty cool! I hope to go when im older
DeleteEven though my family and I have yet to visit a national park, I have found them to be fascinating. My favorite is Yosemite, not only is it a very well-known park, but it is extremely unique in its own ways. One of those is its geographical features, despite its condensed space, Yosemite is filled with mountains, giant sequoia groves, and waterfalls. Not only this, but it also contains Yosemite Valley, a glacial valley carved from granite. Another thing that makes Yosemite so special is the Lyell Glacier, this glacier is the largest in the park and is one of the very few left in Nevada. This national park has been running for almost 127 years, and hopefully will continue to do so for more years to come. https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/nature/geology.htm
ReplyDeleteEmma,
DeleteYosemite is one of my favorites too!
I also haven't ever been to a national park! I plan on visiting a few in the future and I will definitely include Yosemite.
Deletewow 127 years is a long time! We should visit it together in the future!
DeleteI have visited very few national parks but of the ones I've visited my favorite is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. My family visited the Smoky Mountains two summers ago and fell in love with the beauty of the Smoky Mountains. On our trip, we hiked the mountains and saw a beautiful waterfall at the end of our hike. The best part was that you could see the mountains everytime you drove and the lushness of the trees which I loved. The Smoky Mountains are different because it is the most visited national park, they have smoky fog and about 1,500 black bears that live in the mountains. It took quite a bit of effort to get the Smoky Mountains to become a national park. The idea for the mountains to become a national park started in the 1890s. The Smoky Mountains didn't actually become a park until May 1926 and it has been a park for 92 years.

Although I have never been to a national park, Yellowstone is my favorite. Yellowstone National Park is my favorite national park because, from the pictures I have seen of it, Yellowstone is very colorful and a very beautiful place. Yellowstone National Park has been a national park since 1872. It is different from the other parks because it was the very first national park to be established. Many native american tribes, including the Tukudika, used the land as a place to live, as well as hunting grounds. Many archeological sites and trails prove that people have been using Yellowstone for over 11,000 years. I think Yellowstone is a really amazing place full of history and places to see. I hope that one day I will be able to visit this park.

Maggie,
DeleteI so hope that you get to go to Yellowstone. You will love it.
My family has always been into hiking and exploring the great outdoors and although we have never been able to travel to some of the many amazing National Parks, it does not mean I can't have a favorite. My favorite National Park is Sequoia National Park. This park has the most beautiful and huge trees ever. The scenery is breath taking and unreal. I singled out this park in particular because I have always loved trees, and the fact that the Sequoia National Park is filled with remarkable trees makes it my favorite. This park was established in September 25, 1860 to protect the trees from deforestation; it is the first park made to protect a living organism. I hope that one day I will be able to go.
ReplyDeletePhilomena,
DeleteI have never been to the Sequoia National Park. It is totally on my list.
My favorite national park is Yosemite national park. Although I've never been there, it seems like a very beautiful and interesting place to visit. Yosemite is located in central California, and was established in 1890. There are great hiking trails and beautiful sights throughout this park including a wide canyon with amazing rock formations. Overall, I think this would be an amazing park to visit and is my favorite national park. https://www.nationalparks.org/explore-parks/yosemite-national-park
ReplyDeleteMy favorite president is George Washington. First of all, he lead the continental army to victory over the world's strongest empire. Secondly, “No president in American history didn’t want to be president more than George Washington. He knew no person could enter and exit the office with the same level of reputation." He even tried to quit after his first term but he was told the republic couldn't survive without him. This shows that he was president not for the fame and glory for himself, but because he wanted to help out the country. Some might say "Well George Washington owned slaves so why is he your favorite?" My answer to that is that all people that were rich enough to own slaves owned them. Another piece of evidence to support George Washington is that he is the only founding father that freed his slaves upon his death. I got my information from https://www.history.com/news/history-faceoff-who-was-the-greatest-president-washington-or-lincoln
ReplyDeleteGeorge Washington is always a good choice.
DeleteFor this weeks blog post I decided to write about Yellowstone National Park which was established on March 1, 1872. The park is mainly located in Wyoming, although part of the park is in Montana and Idaho as well. One thing that makes Yellowstone different from other national parks is because they have half of the world's geysers located in the park one of them being Old Faithful. Also, there is wide variety of wildlife that you can see, from bears to bison. Overall, Yellowstone is a really fun and interesting place to visit.
ReplyDeleteSabrina,
DeleteYou know that I am currently obsessed with Yellowstone. I loved it this past summer.
My favorite national park is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. One unique feature of this park is offers a view of two of the most active volcanoes in the world: Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. The park is home to a variety of animals including, a host of fascinating birds, carnivorous caterpillars, crickets partial to new lava flows, and sea turtles. Nēnēs can be found in the park too. They are the state bird. The park was established August 1, 1916. Overall, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a very fascinating place to visit.

DeleteMy favorite president is George Washington. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He began his presidency from 1789 to 1797, before this he had already served as a commander of the colonial armies during the American Revolution and a general. He was also the very first person to become president, this is because of the great things he had done to win the American Revolution. He was most famous for leading his soldiers into battle and being persistent no matter the circumstances. Although he believed that slavery was ok he had still done great things for America. George Washington died on December 14, 1799 at the age of 67 due to epiglottis and hypovolemic shock, a type of internal bleeding.

For this week's blog, I chose President John F Kennedy. Although, I really don’t have a favorite president since all of them have their own pro's and con's. However, I picked JFK because he was the first Catholic President in office as well as he was the youngest to be elected. JFK accomplished many things such as starting the plan of landing a man on the moon, even though he wasn't there to see it come true. He also stopped the Cuban Missile Crisis during 1962. JFK oversaw the "launch”of the Peace Corps, which would send young volunteers to underdeveloped countries and areas around the world. Sadly, he was gone too soon to carry on larger plans for the country. JFK was assassinated on November 22 , 1963. However his legacy carries on in the NASA space program and in civil rights promotion as well as a complicated history of Vietnam since he was killed before he could take any real action in a war that the U.S in reality lost. A legacy is a gift that is handed down or conveyed from one person to another. (According to dictionary.com)
ReplyDeleteFinally my favorite National Park is Yellowstone. Although I have never visited any parks in my knowledge, I find that Yellowstone is a beautiful jem that many people appreciate. Even though I have never gone, I admire the wide range of species that live there and natural beauty of a location that people have access too.

I’m writing about my favorite national park. My favorite park is Lincoln’s Home. I find it very interesting to look at what they have preserved, and walk on the same roads as a former president. Touring throughout the house itself is an interesting experience. Some things are an reimagining of what the original furnishings, and floorings would be, but there are other things that were there when Lincoln lived there. Like the mirror in his room and the original staircase. Lincoln’s Home is unique compared to other national parks in that it is protecting a historical site and important part of U.S. history. It has been a National Park for 46 years since 1972.

Teagan,
DeleteI have never been to Lincoln's home. Is it near Springfield?
I am a huge fan of nature and its beauty, and I personally love being outdoors, so my favorite national park would have to be Yosemite National Park located in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Yosemite has a breathe taking 1,169 square miles, with many different rock formations, and interesting animal species, that you can see in their natural habitat. It is truly amazing how stunning this park actually is. There are so many different animals at Yosemite and they range from black bears to bobcats. Once again, this place truly is astonishing!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite president is Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt’s cousin. Franklin Roosevelt was the 32nd President. He served as president for The reason why I like him so much is that he led America through one of the toughest times, The Great Depression. He also led America through most of its involvement during World War 2. Plus, he was elected for four terms, longer than any other U.S. president(before they made it a rule that a president can only serve two terms). https://www.history.com/topics/us-presidents/franklin-d-roosevelt
ReplyDeleteFDR... what a guy! I love the Tennessee Valley Authority.
DeleteMy favorite national park is Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. I have never been to Yellowstone, but I have been very close to it and I know a lot about it. Yellowstone was the worlds first national park established on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone is different from other national parks. For instance it sits at the top of an active volcano. Also, there are more than 350 animals in the park, some of those species being threatened (grizzly bears and Canada lynx). A fun fact about Yellowstone National Park is that it is 3,474 square miles which is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined. 5% of the large park is water, 15% grassland, and 80% forests.

So far the Grand Canyon Nation Park has to be one of my favorites. Although I've never visited this area the pictures and the view looks breathtaking and I hope when I'm older I get to go. What makes it so special colorful rock layers record billions of years of history and hide many unique species. The Colorado River has been carving the Grand Canyon for only 6 million years, but it is flowing through canyons that date back about 70 million years.

That's so interesting! I have never been to a National park but If I did the Grand Canyon seems like an awesome place to go!!

DeleteAlthough I’ve only been to one national park, I’ve seen many in pictures. One of my favorite’s is the Sequoia National Park in the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. It is adjacent to the Kings Canyon National Park. The park, established on September 25th 1890. Here, there are giant trees that stretch across approximately 404,000 acres. It’s one of my favorites because of the giant trees that you can drive through that stretch hundreds of feet overhead. Someday, I hope to go there to see the beautiful trees while their still there. Even though, they don’t die easily or fall over because of their size, one day, they might not be there.
ReplyDeleteSequoia trees are so gorgeous. It's so amazing how big they are.
DeleteThough I have never shown much interest keeping up with the government nor shown much interest in the presidency, my favorite president would have to be George W. Bush. Born in July 6, 1946 in New Haven Connecticut, Bush was one of the first presidents to be the son of a prior president. The Political bloodline didn't stop with him. Even his younger brother Jeb was the governor of Florida and too, ran for president (2016). Bush, being a lover of painting, golf, and even baseball, left an amazing mark in history and will go down as one of the best presidents America has ever been blessed with.

My favorite National Park is the Statue of Liberty in New York. It's not like most national parks because it's not a large forest or even natural, it's a big statue given to us by France on the edge of a city. It was a symbol for freedom. The Statue of Liberty became a national park on May 11.1965 which makes it 53 years old.

The national park that I would love to go to is Olympic National Park. I think this would be a cool place to visit because of the amazing variety of views. Snowy mountains, rivers, lakes, and rain forests is just the beginning of the sites to see. The park is located on the northern coast of Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. It has 876,669 acres of land, over 3,000 miles of rivers and streams and over 60 glaciers. The park was established in 1938. This would be a fun place to go for me personally because I love being outdoors as well as photography and the pictures I've seen of the park make me want to travel there and experience everything for myself.

My favorite national park is also the only vacation that has truly impacted me emotionally and changed who I am. Voyaguers National Park is located in Northern Minnesota near the Canadian border. It is a place so saturated with beauty that I cannot find the words to give it justice. It was establish on April 5th, 1975 and encompasses 218,054 acres. The park is 40% water, but don't let that fool you. It is not just a water park for boating and fishing. It also has more than 50 miles of hiking trails over more than 900 islands, each with different shapes, sizes, vegetation, sand, rocks. The rocks are an especially interesting part of Voyageurs as they can be more than two billion years old. Let me write that another way:
ReplyDelete2,000,000,000 years old.
Each rock formation has an unfathomable amount of history, and if you don't feel you'd like to learn about them, they still look and feel incredible all by themselves.
Voyageurs National Park is one of the very few things that I would call truly beautiful. That sentiment means a great deal in my eyes. If you ever, EVER get the chance to go, do it. For your own sake, it'll take your breath away just as it did mine.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite national park is Yosemite. I have been there once and it was a beautiful experience. In 1890 Yosemite National Park was established. Yosemite is one of the first nature preserves in the USA. Native Americans lived in the Yosemite area for 4,000 years and during the gold rush Yosemite was a very popular landing ground for miners. Yosemite is known for their giant Sequoia trees and the half dome which is made of granite. There are many waterfalls across the land of Yosemite and many beautiful hikes to take to go see them. Overall, Yosemite is a very unique national park. It is so beautiful and I would definitely suggest visiting the park when you get a chance.

DeleteMy favorite president was Barack Obama for many reasons. He was the first African American president, he pushed for alternative energy development and helped improve gay rights among other things. He was born in Hawaii in 1961. Throughout his life, he encountered the death of his father, racism and discrimination. Despite any hardships he ended up going in Harvard law school then a U.S. senator, then president. One of the many things he advocated for, and one off the reasons I am so fond of him, was The Clean Power Plan, which focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Overall, Obama pushed the U.S. towards many new concepts that not only affected me, but benefited the people and land of America.

My favorite president is George Washington. George was born February 22nd 1732 in Pope's Creek, Virginia. He received no formal education yet accomplished many great things. Although at first he made some mistakes like starting the french and Indian war at only 21 years old. He in the end was a steadfast general and was the pride of Americans during the american revolution and lead his troops to victory. His ability to win a war were the odds were stacked so high against is astounding and is one reason he is my favorite president. After winning the war he was the obvious pick for president. he helped give birth to the nation and set the foundation for what America is today. In a time of crisis he stepped up and took charge and I admire him for that despite all his faults in life. He died at 67 on December 14 1799 of acute bacterial epiglottitis. He lived an honorable life and was the only president to be voted into office unanimously(TWICE). He is a great role model of what Americans are and should be. All this is why George Washington the first president of the US is my favorite president.
ReplyDeleteYou gave great details in your paragraph! I love how you use the term "i admire"
DeleteRonald Reagan is my favorite president.Reagan was from a small town called Tampico, IL. He had a successful career as an actor, before becoming Governor of California. Reagan took presidential office on January 20th, 1981 and served a full 2 terms, ending in 1989. During his years in office, he worked with Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, and became an instrumental force in bringing down the Berlin Wall, as well as communism altogether. In 1987, he came to an agreement with the Soviets to eliminate intermediate range nuclear missiles, an agreement very important in ending the arms race between the two countries. He also spoke at the Berlin Wall, challenging Gorbachev to, "tear down this wall," which happened two years later. Reagan also was known for his major tax reform mostly in the Tax Reform act of 1986, reducing the number of tax brackets and other things. Another thing I like about Reagan is that he stood up to the federal air traffic controllers union (PATCO). When they went on strike, he gave them a choice, and eventually fired 11,000 workers, citing it as a national safety concern, sending a firm message that unions would not be coddled by the government. In conclusion, because of his foreign policy, tax reform, and standing up against unions, Reagan is my favorite president.

DeleteAlthough I’ve not been there, my favorite national park is Yellowstone. Yellowstone is the first ever national park and has been open since 1872. Everyone probably knows Yellowstone by the geyser, but there is much more to offer at Yellowstone. There is places to hike, camp, go fishing, and many landforms to visit. With 3,471 square miles of land you can always find a new place to explore. Here are some tips if you’re planning on visiting: Arrive early in the day, plan ahead, and stay safe around animals and hot springs

Abraham Lincoln is my favorite president for various reasons, one of the main reasons is because he is the president that put the most effort into abolishing slavery, he was the 16th president. But before he abolished slavery and became the 16th president he was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. After he moved to New Salem in Illinois he got into politics and in 1834 he was elected Illinois state legislature. Lincoln won election to the US House of Representatives in 1846 and began serving his term the following year. Later as he continued to be president he passed the Emancipation Proclamation and tried to help abolish slavery.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite National Park is the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. I went there on vacation a few years ago and was amazed by the wonderful scenery and unique history. While we were there we saw some extraordinary wildlife, crystal clear lakes, miles of beautiful grasslands and wildflowers, and we surrounded by breathtaking mountains. Congress decided to to preserve the region as a national park in the late 19th century, and in 1929 Grand Teton National Park was established, protecting the Teton Mountain Range. The aspect that makes this park so unique besides its lovely views is it rich history. One fact is that the first Anglo-American to see the saw-edged Teton peaks is believed to be John Colter who travel with Lewis and Clark on their expedition. Colter left the expedition during its return trip down the Missouri in 1807, eventually finding his way into the valley at the base of the Tetons, which would later be called Jackson Hole.

The integrity of a national park is deeply intertwined with the legacy of a park, and that legacy can be affected by significantly reducing the total amount of protected land and collaterally ruining the image of that park. This has been performed by our President, tainting the integrity of 2 national parks, namely Bear Ears National monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante, without regards to the continuation of the park or the animals that happen to inhabit that park. On the basis of Monopolization, I believe that National Parks shouldn't be affected as they are, they should be seen as Wildlife reserves, not real estate. Legacy is something that was left behind by someone, something to remember them by, an example of this is the Dwindling Number and amount of national parks unfortunately due to space capacities and lack of sufficient project funding, which has caused many parks to lose space or completely disappear altogether. The presidents that left these parks behind intended for them to be places of devoid of human interactions, and meant for these places to be peaceful. Trump’s actions have taken a sizable piece of that privilege away and have taken away a small part of the legacy that previous presidents have left behind for others to enjoy. When Trump slashed around 2 million acres of land he took away 85% of the land away from Bear Ears and 45% from Grand Staircase-Escalante
ReplyDeleteMy favorite president is Donald J. Trump. He was born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York. He became the 45th and most current president after defeating Democrat Hillary Clinton. He was inaugurated on January 20, 2017. Donald Trump has this confidence to what he says and he helps the economy save a lot of money. He’s also helping lower unemployment rates tremendously. Overall, he’s been a chill president so far. He’s done some great things for the country.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite national park is the Great Smoky Mountains National park. It’s located on the borders of Tennessee and North Carolina. In the summer going into 8th grade that's where we went for our big family vacation that summer. It was established in the summer of 1934 and receive over 10 million visitors every year. Something I think it special about the park is there may being around 90,000 unknown species that we have noticed record yet there and possibly 500 species we haven’t discovered there as man kind. Also black bears rom the downtown streets of gatlinburg and when we were the one just decide to stop in the middle of the road in front of us. It also has a huge population of mini trout. From the forest and mountains with streams of all directions The Great Smoky mountains national park is my favorite

I haven't been to many national parks, but one that I would love to go to is Crater Lake in Oregon. 7,700 years ago, a volcanic eruption causing a tall peak to fall. Not only that, but Crater Lake is one of the most pristine lakes on the planet and is fed by rain and snow. Crater Lake is also the deepest lake in the USA. I've visited Oregon a lot, but on those trips me and my family have never made it to Crater Lake, and I'd love to see it.

The National Park that I choose was Manuel Antonio National Park. I have never been there, but the more I read about it the more I want to go. It is located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It was established in 1972 and expanded in 1980.In 2011 it was named one of the 12 greatest national parks. The main reason I want to go is because the park is home to two and three toed sloths and I had always dreamed of meeting a sloth in its natural habitat. During high tide there are boats available at the entrance or you can choose to walk. There is a land bridge and I am interested in seeing how a land bridge actually looks and how it holds up. There is also a sloth trial which would be my favorite part to visit. At the end of it there is a hotel just out of the park. There is a view point area called overlook trail which as the name suggests overlooks the park and has to be a breathtaking view. Overall the whole experience would be amazing and I would really love to go.
