Extinction Risk

Last week was our last week for the ecology unit, but I feel like we still need to address endangered species.  I might be slightly obsessed with Yellowstone, and last week I was so crushed to find out that the Yellowstone Grizzly was put back on the endangered species list.  I saw a grizzly at Yellowstone, so this really hits home with me.  What if future generations can only see grizzly bears in the zoo?  Current estimates declare that there are over 40,000 species of endangered plants and animals.  The endangered species include one in four mammals, one in eight birds and a third of all amphibians.  Plant and insect endangered species are hard to estimate because many are going extinct before they have even been discovered.  There are numerous campaigns to raise awareness and funds to protect these species.

This week I want you to pick your favorite endangered species.  Please try not to pick repeats, so look at what other students have already picked before you pick yours.

   1.  First, change your Google + profile picture to a picture of the endangered species
   2.  Title your blog post with a song title or lyrics that are fitting for your species.
What would be their walk-up song if they were a baseball player?
   3.  In your blog post, explain why you picked this endangered species
   4.  Make a list with the Status, Population, Scientific Name (should be in italics), and habitat

Below is my example with the Bengal Tiger:  (so the tiger is picked so you need to pick another species)

"The Eye of the Tiger"
Despite my love for the sea turtle, I had to pick the Bengal Tiger for my endangered species.  Not only is the Bengal Tiger our school mascot, but it is also one of the most beautiful large cat species.  A group of tigers is known as an "ambush" or a "streak."  Perhaps we should change the name of the Central Crazies to the Central Ambush?

It's the eye of the tiger
It's the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night

As the official MLB baseball season draws to a close today, I think "The Eye of the Tiger" is the absolute perfect walk up song for my favorite school mascot.  Especially the line about the last known survivor is fitting knowing how this majestic species is disappearing in the wild.

Status:  Endangered
Poplulation:  More than 2500 (mostly in zoos)

  1. "Born Free"

For my endangered species I chose the Asian elephants. I chose this species because they are used for their tusks, their natural habitats are being taken away and they are also sadly captured and used for tourist attractions and profits. The song "Born Free" reminded me of this endangered species because for so many years they have been held captive for human profit, in circus', zoos, and as tourist attractions (elephant rides). I think that these animals should be allowed to roam free as nature intended just like the song states. Elephants are beautiful and intelligent creatures and they should be admired and respected rather than destroyed.

    Status: Endangered
Population: Between 35,000 and 40,000 Asian elephants in the wild
    Scientific Name: Elephas maximus
Habitat: grasslands, tropical evergreen forests, semi-evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests, dry deciduous forests and dry thorn forests.

  2. "Survivor"

For this week's blog post I chose the Mexican Gray Wolf. For the people who don't know, I love wolves. I find them so fascinating and beautiful, although they have a pretty bad reputation either being depicted wrong in fairy tales such as Little Red Riding hood and the Three Little Pigs or from their way of living. However in reality wolves (all species) are very similar to us as humans. They have a strong sense of loyalty towards their pack, which is similar to our families.
Back to the Mexican gray Wolf which are also known as Lobo's (Canis Lupus Baileyi) were hunted to near extinction as a supposed threat to cattle and other livestock in Mexico and parts of the U.S. As a matter of fact all the Lobo's alive to today are descended from just 5 wolves captured in 1973. However despite the efforts to try and raise the population the wolves remained endangered. As well as these wolves aren't "true”wolves due to the fact that they have very limited genetics from being breed from captive and wild wolves. And it doesn't help that dozens of released wolves have killed by hunters or cars. Yet they still live, they may be few in numbers but I believe that we can do something to help. I don't know what but I do not want a future where the only place that my young brother and future generations will only be able to see a marvelous creature from a book or a piece of glass. We must help protect the few survivors.

As for a song, I chose "Survivor” by Destiny's Child. The lyrics in the chorus which begin with

    "I'm a survivor , I'm not gon' give up
I'm not gon' stop , I'm gon' work harder
    I'm a survivor , I'm gonna make it
I will survive , keep on survivin'

This part of the song is a great walk up song for this amazing creature because despite their few numbers, there are survivors and they will survive in one form or another. Sadly it may not be in the wild, maybe it will be in a zoo or maybe in a book, as long as we don't forget about them is what matters.

    Status: Endangered

  3. "Season of the Shark"
Even though deadly, I think great White sharks are really interesting and beautiful creatures. It is really sad they are on the endangered list even though they are known as the largest predatory fish and eat almost everything. Although they don't often travel in large groups, a group of Great White sharks is called a heard or frenzy. I chose the song "Season of the Shark" by Yo La Tengo as my title however, I think the Jaws theme would be more appropriate for their walk up if it had any lyrics.

  5. “Poison Whiskey” -Lynyrd Skynyrd

    “He drank ole poison whiskey
    'Til it killed him dead.

    He drank ole poison whiskey
    'Til it killed him dead.

The doctor's gonna shake his head.
The only thing he's gonna tell ya
    "Stop drinkin' Johnny Walker's Red
Don't drink poison whiskey, don't you drink it boy.”

I chose “Poison Whiskey” because it is symbolic of how we humans know exactly what were doing when it comes to the wellness of our world and the animals in it. That, instead of responding in a selfless manner, the greed in our human nature takes over and we do what is convenient for us rather than what is good for others. I chose the red panda, not just because Red Pandas are my second favorite animal, right behind the Panda itself… but because I think it is a great example of how us humans have affected our environment. I am fascinated by the unusual patterned and bushy tailed animals, and it saddens me that we are a main reason for its concerning status, with clothing, poaching and accidently trapping them in traps. This (primarily) herbivore is said to be named after the word “ponya” meaning plant eater. I’m sad to say, that before this assignment I had no clue that the Red Panda was endangered! Hopefully this blog post will spread the word that we humans need to think of our environment as a gift and preserve it for as long as we can.

I chose the Indochinese tiger as my endangered species because our school mascots is a tiger and because I think tigers are an extremely interesting species and they deserve some appreciation and to be noticed before they're gone.

  7. “The Porpoises and The Pirate Ship”

For my endangered species I chose the Yangtze Finless Porpoise. I chose this species because I love water animals and I think they are graceful and mesmerizing. I would hate to see this species go extinct. I chose the song, “The Porpoises and The Pirate Ship” for the porpoises because it is a song about porpoises and how they go on adventures in the water. The Yangtze Finless Porpoise is not only a mesmerizing dolphin, but also extremely intelligent. It should be protected from extinction.

    Scientific Name: Neophocaena asiaeorientalis
    Habitats: Lakes and rivers

  8. “Save Me”
I picked the Dugong as my endangered species of choice. The Dugong is of close relation to the manatee or “The Sea Cow” as some may call it. How you can tell the two apart is by their whale shaped tail and it’s habitat in shallow coastal waters instead of fresh water rivers. They graze on sea grasses and are a very popular tourist attraction. Their numbers are being limited by humans industrial growth and fisherman accidentally catching them in their nets. Dugongs are wonderful, peaceful creatures that should not have to suffer from what we have and are doing to harm them, let us work together to save these creatures rather then destroying them.

    Status: Vulnerable
Population: over 30,000 left in the oceans
    Scientific Name: Dugong dugon
Habitat: Shallow coastal waters (salt water)

  10. “Golden Sea”
I picked sea lions because some of my favorite animals are marine animals. It would hurt me to see sea lions become an extinct species and wanted to know what caused them to become endangered. They have become endangered because they become vulnerable with climate change, victims of bycatch with fisheries, and are affected by the copious amounts of trash in the ocean. This makes me want to reduce the amount of waste I produce to try to help not only the sea lions but other marine animals affected by the trash in the ocean.

  11. “I’m on top of the world”
    Pygmy Three-Toed Sloth

I decided to choose the sloth, or more specifically the Pygmy Three-Toed Sloth. I have always loved sloths and when I saw that they were in the endangered list, I knew that this was the animal I am choosing. The pygmy sloth is only found in Isla Escudo de Veraguas and is famous for its slow movements. It’s main forms of defense are camouflage and stealth, and they can remain up in the trees for days at times only coming down to urinate. Researchers found only about a hundred of them left hanging in the trees, for their habitat is being destroyed through deforestation and such. They are one of the most endangered mammals in the world.

“Cause I'm on top of the world
I'm on top of the world
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
    I've been waiting to smile
Been holding it in for a while”

I chose this song because it reminds me of how much the pygmy sloths have been through and how they are still surviving and reaching upwards.

    Status: critically endangered
    Population: less than one-hundred
    Scientific Name: Bradypus pygmaeus
Habitat: In Isla Escudo de Veraguas and more specifically, in the Red Mangrove trees

  12. “Slow Train”
    The Green Sea Turtle
I decided to pick the green sea turtle because it is one of my favorites. The green turtle is a beautiful species but sadly, they are endangered. They are threatened by overharvesting of eggs, being caught in fishing gear, loss of nesting sites, and hunting of adults. The WWF is helping them by eliminating bycatch (switching to turtle friendly hooks), protecting their habitat, and tracking the turtles through satellite (helps them to figure out feeding areas, migration patterns, etc.). What we can do to help this wonderful species is support WWF.
“Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happenin' to my companions
Are they lost or are they found?”
This line really struck me and I feel it fits in with the green sea turtle. They are wondering what is happening to all of their species.
    Status: endangered
Population: Between 85,000 and 90,000 nesting females.
    Scientific name: Chelonia mydas
Habitat: near the coastline and around islands and live in bays and protected shores (especially in areas with sea grass beds)-in the Marine Biome

  13. “We’re Not Going To Take It”
I choose the Amur Leopard because of how endangered this species is. There are only 84 left in the whole world, which is very scary. However, I also choose this species because of the amazing things it can do. It can run up to 37 mph and can jump 10 ft high and 19 ft vertically. This is higher and farther than any other leopard. A group of leopards is called a leap. Probably because of how high they can jump.

    We're not gonna take it
No, we ain't gonna take it
Oh we're not gonna take it anymore

  14. "The Sid Shuffle" (The sloth's walk-up song would take hours)
    3 Toed sloth

The reason that I chose the sloth was because, when I was in Costa Rica, my family and I rented a house, and in the front yard of the house a sloth lived there. The sloth was extremely slow and barely moved far up the tree throughout the period of the day. The sloth also looked very gentle an un-bothered by anything in is's surrounding. I had always known that sloths were endangered, so once I saw that sloths were on the list for me to choose from, I knew that I had to chose them. Lastly, the sloths can sleep 10-20 hours per day so it reminded me of what my sister would do if she could.

    Sloth Info:

  16. “We Didn’t Start the Fire”

I picked Polar Bears as my animal because even though they’re only listed vulnerable I think they can easily be extinct sometime soon. With global warming in the rise Polar Bear’s habitats are getting melted. Unlike many animals it would be extremely hard to put a Polar Bear inside a zoo. To create a normal climate like they would in the wild would be very hard. Sadly I see no rise in Polar Bear population because of global warming. Global warming is how i connected Polar Bears to my song because global warming has always been a problem before we were alive and it’s going to be hard to stop.

I chose the Amur Leopard for my endangered species. I chose this species because the Leopards are truly something special. These leopards are specifically found in Northeast China. They are going extinct because bones, and other parts of the animal are in traditional Asian medicine. I chose the song "Lean On" by Major Lazer and Dj Snake because in the song it goes...

"Blow a kiss, fire a gun
We need someone to lean on
Blow a kiss, fire a gun
All we need is somebody to lean on"

these lyrics would be part of the Amur Leopards walk up song because they need help before they go extinct!

  19. I chose the Red Panda for my endangered species. I decided to go with this species because nobody really knows what a Red Panda is, and I thought it looked funny. This species is threatened by severe habitat loss, poaching, and accidental trapping. Additionally this species has been surviving for millions of years, so good "walkout" song for this animal would probably be something with themes of endurance or surviving. I chose the song "Survivor" by Destiny's Child because the song is about pushing through a rough patch, which has similar themes pertaining to the Red Panda's current state.

    "I'm a Survivor
    I'm not gon give up
    I'm not gon stop

  20. "Baby Shark"
I chose the Whale shark for my example of an endangered species. They eat little fishes, and are also filter feeders, which means they filter out plankton and nutrients, for food. The song baby shark relates to the whale shark because they usually have really long life times. They are endangered because of bycatch losses which essentially being caught by fishers on accident. Another reason is because of vessel strikes (boats hitting or running over wildlife.) These examples relate to the lyrics “Run away doo doo, doo doo doo doo x3” because they often are running away from boats and fishing nets.

Baby Shark doo doo, doo doo doo doo x3
    Baby Shark
Mommy Shark doo doo, doo doo doo doo x3

Daddy Shark doo doo, doo doo doo doo x3

I first heard of a spider monkey in a movie, but never actually knew what it looked like and this blog post gave me a chance to take a closer look at one of nature’s neutiful primates. I chose the song “Super Trouper” because a group of black spider monkeys is called a “troop” and I like picturing monkeys discoing. 25. We’ve got to save the world

For my endangered species, I decided to pick the blue whale. I choose this species because I have known blue whales all my life and it's heartbreaking to see them go. These animals are threatened by environmental change including habitat loss and toxics. Blue whales can also be harmed by ship strikes and by becoming entangled in fishing gear. I chose the song “Save The World” by George Harrison and some of the lyrics I thought were perfect for this assignment were:

“We've got to save the world
Someone else may want to use it
    It's time you knew
    How close we've come
    We're gonna lose it
We gotta save, we gotta save We gotta save the world”

I think his reasoning to write this was to tell us that were not the only ones who are going to live on this planet and we need to be mindful of the upcoming generation who hasn't seen not only the blue whales but, all the animals in the world. The citizens of the planet need to be aware of what's going on, come up with a plan and start right away or we're going to lose our animals one by one

They can be harmed by fishing gear and ship strikes. In 1966 commercial whaling was banned to help the whales, but climate change still poses a threat to the whales. The WWF has helped the whales by preventing the whales from interacting between fisheries where they can be threatened by the fishing that happens in the area. They are increasing in population.

Kiwi birds are nocturnal animals and I cried when I heard that they are going extinct due to poaching.I have such a strong opinion when it comes to poaching and it crushes my heart when a species becomes endangered because of it. Poachers kill Kiwi birds for their fur. Humans are the main reason why Kiwi birds are going extinct. There homes are being demolished due to human building and expansions. The only chance for the Kiwi bird to survive is if humans change there ways and put an effort to restore this beautiful species.

I choose to the Bornean Orangutan for my endangered species because my favorite character as a child was King Louie from the Jungle Book. Orangutans are known as the man of the forest. Their distinct orange fur, long arms, human like hands, prominent cheek pads called flangs, and large throat sack makes them have a unique appearance. It’s extremely sad to see that there are only 104,700 of these organisms left.

Now I'm the king of the swingers, the jungle V.I.P
I reached the top and had to stop
    And that's what bothering me

I think this song perfectly represents the Orangutan. They started at the top as “kings of the forest” and now are decreasing due to deforestation and poaching.
    Status: Critically Endangered
    Population: About 104,700
    Scientific Name: Pongo pygmaeus
Habitat: Found in the treetops of tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia

  32. “Monkey Gone To Heaven”
I chose this species because I love monkeys. They are so cute. Orangutans are beautiful creatures. They are vital to their ecosystem because the carry seeds and disperse them to help grow the forest. Orangutans have a slow productive rate putting them in even more danger. It takes 3-5 years for a female orangutan to have a baby, making it take a long time for their species to recover.
Lyrics: ”This monkey’s gone to heaven
    This monkey’s gone to heaven
    This monkey’s gone to heaven
    This monkey’s gone to heaven”
    Status: critically endangered
    Population: about 104,700
Scientific name: Pongo abelii, Pongo pygmaeus
    Habitat: Southeast Asian Tropical Forest

  33. "Butterfly" by: BTS

I chose the monarch butterflies because I think they are one of the most beautiful creatures in the world. They are endangered because of global warming causing their migration patterns being disturbed. The song I chose may be relevant due to just its title but in the song the lyrics say:

Is it true Is it true
    You You
You’re so beautiful, that I’m scared
    Untrue Untrue
    You You You

Will you stay by my side
    Will you promise me
If I let go of your hand, you’ll fly away and break
I’m scared scared scared of that

    Will you stop time
    If this moment passes
    As though it hadn’t happened
I’m scared scared scared I’ll lose you

    Butterfly like a Butterfly
Just like a Butterfly bu butterfly
    Butterfly like a butterfly
Just like a Butterfly bu butterfly

These lyrics are very reflective of the situations the butterflies are in and we all need to hope we don't lose them.

    Status: endangered
Population: 78 million (This may seem like a lot of butterflies but the population has decreased dramatically)
    Scientific name: Danaus plexippus
    Habitat: Forests and mountains

  34. “Under the Sea”
I picked a Hawksbill turtle because growing up every time we’d learn about what happens when we throw trash into the ocean, the turtles were one of the main examples. I saw that the plastic is super harmful for them so I've always felt bad for them and have grown to love them. As well, i used to have 3 turtles because where we live there are many turtles that there is even a turtle crossing sign.
There are approximately 15,000 female Hawksbill Sea Turtles capable of laying eggs left in wild. The population is between 20,000 and 23,000 nesting females. The Scientific Name is Eretmochelys imbricata. Hawksbill turtles are found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans and stay near sandy nesting sites.

  35. “Glorious”
I chose the pangolin because it something that i’d never heard of and I thought it would be interesting. The lyrics “I made it through the darkest part of night” really relates to how first of all they’re nocturnal and how they’re being illegally hunted and killed.
    I feel glorious, glorious
Got a chance to start again
I was born for this, born for this
It's who I am, how could I forget?
I made it through the darkest part of the night
And now I see the sunrise
    Now I feel glorious, glorious
    I feel glorious, glorious
    Status: Critically Endangered
Population: Unknown(only says how many are killed each year)
    Scientific Name: Manis temminckii
Habitat: Forests and grasslands in Africa and Asia

  36. "Small Town USA"
After looking at the list of many endangered species I decided to pick the Hector's Dolphin. This song relates to the Hector Dolphins because there are very few of their kind left and this song talks about living in a small town with not very many people in it. It is very unfortunate for these dolphins because since they live very close to shore there is a problem with them being hit with boats and getting caught in trawl nets. This species is the smallest and rarest marine dolphins in the world and it would be a shame to see all of them disappear.
    Status: Endangered
    Scientific name: Cephalorhynchus hectori
    Population: estimated at 7,000
    Habitat: Oceans

  38. "5000 Candles in the Wind"
I chose the Vaquita mostly because of their extremely urgent situation. They are the rarest marine mammal with a population of just 30. They were discovered in 1958 and have been the subject of illegal fishing practices for a long time. I chose the song "5000 Candles in the Wind" to illustrate the irony in the fact that the death of a horse, however sentimental, overshadows the urgent situation of the vaquitas. I had never even heard of vaquitas until this week. That alone goes to show how little the general population seems to know or care about vaquitas and other endangered species.

    Bye bye Li'l Sebastion
Miss you in the saddest fashion
    Bye bye Li'l Sebastion
You're 5000 candles in the wind

    Status: Critically Endangered
    Population: 30
    Scientific Name: Phocoena sinus
Habitat: Marine, only found in northern Gulf of California

  39. "Africa"
I chose the Black Rhino for my endangered species. I chose this species because it is a species that is forgotten about by a lot of people and it doesn't get much attention. I chose this song because Africa is where many Rhinos live however there are few there now because the species is endangered.
    Status: Endangered
    Population: 5,000-5,400
    Scientific name: Diceros bicornis
Habitat: Semi-Desert Savannah, Woodlands, Forests, Wetlands

  40. “Penguin, James Penguin”

I choose the Galapagos Penguin as my endangered animal. After going to the galapagos islands these summer I got to learn so much about them and are super rare. We had a choose either a hike or going on the boat to look for the penguins and I glad I went on the boat because we got to a see a whole colony of them!

    “He's Penguin, James Penguin
    That dapper little guy
Like a well dressed duck in a three piece tux
    He's Santa's secret spy”

I choose the song Penguin, James Penguin by Brad Paisley, It’s such a fun song talking and describes a guy thats like a penguin and I could just see a little galapagos penguin waddle out of the baseball field dancing to it.

    Status: Endangered
    Population: fewer than 2,000
    Scientific Name: Spheniscus mendiculus
Habitat: Oceans and land but specifically around the Galapagos Islands

  41. "Welcome to the Jungle"
The endangered species that I chose was the bonobos. I chose this species because I know that they are endangered and also because they are some of the cutest animals I've seen.

"Welcome to the jungle, it gets worse here every day
You learn to live like an animal in the jungle where we play
If you hunger for what you see you'll take it eventually
You can have everything you want but you better not take it from me"

    Status: Endangered
    Population: 10000 to 50000
    Scientific name: Pan paniscus
    Habitat: rainforests

  42. - The song entitled "Leopard of the Kilimanjaro" is a song that correlated and embodied the Amur leopard. I chose this song because another famous name for the Amur leopard is Korean leopard, and this song was written and sung by a Korean singer.

    - While reading about the lemur leopard, it really made me hurt knowing how endangered they are and knowing that this beautiful creature could be extinct sooner rather than later. Amur leopards are a rare species native to Russia's far east. The Amur leopard can run at speeds of up to 37 miles per hour and has been reported to leap an astounding 19 feet horizontally and 10 feet vertically. What I find so fascinating about the Amur leopard is that they are a solitary animal. Since they are nimble footed and have tons of strength, they carry and hide their unfinished kills to complete later. Another thing I love about the Amur leopard is that the males often stay with females after the birth of their young. The fact that they are naturally solitary animals, but stay for their young is amazing. Lastly, the Amur leopard ecologically, economically, and culturally. Conservation of its habitat helps various species such as the Amur Tiger and prey species such as Deer.

    Status: Critically Endangered

    Population: Over 84 individual leopards

    Scientific Name: Panthera pardus orientalis

Habitat: Far East Russia, Korea, Forest, Mountains, Broadleaf

  43. “Baby Shark”
I choose the great white shark because I’m really fascinated with the ocean and honestly I’m not afraid of sharks. It’s really unfair the way that they’re treated and I think we should protect the sharks.
“Baby shark do do do do do do baby shark do do do do do do baby shark do do do do do do baby shark...Mama shark do do do do do do mama shark…”
    Status: vulnerable
    Population: 8,000-10,000
    Scientific name: Carcharodon carcharias
Habitat: Almost all coastal and offshore waters with temperatures ranging from 12 and 24 degrees Celsius.
