How about some Good News?

Some weeks we just need a little good news.  With losing an hour of sleep and still a good 10 days before spring break, I found some articles that made me smile.

An iceberg actually flipped over and looks like jewelry.

  1. I read the article “A Supercolony of Penguins Has Been Found Near Antarctica” where it displays satellite images and information about the drone discovering 1.5 million Adélie penguins living in the Danger Islands. I found this interesting because these types of penguins are one of the two species whose habitats require ice. In addition, viewing the video showing thousands of Adélie penguins was really cool. Due to the large amount of penguins in this location, the greater number will make sure that the conservation efforts keep them safe. Also, Danger Island penguins don’t nest in a circular pattern however they are very individual to their nesting spots and prizes habitat over safety. The global population of these penguins are about 4 million pairs and has nearly doubled over the last four decades. Discovering new species is always good news.

  2. The mystery of Amelia Earhart was considered one of the greatest in the 20th century and still lives on today. Her whereabouts have fascinated me for a long time because it just seems so random. I remember reading books and conspiracy theories but this scientific discovery is helping us put the pieces together. The article noted a new forensics technology known as Fordisc that allowed researcher Richard Jantz to correctly identify the bones and claim them Amelia’s. It’s surreal to think how modern technology has advanced so much that we now have access to understanding the truth behind what used to be unknown events. Furthermore, the amount of data necessary to make these discoveries is incredible. For example in crimes detectives look solely for fingerprints or licked stamps (the case of the unibomber) to make direct conclusions. I think Amelia Earhart’s discovery is amazing and yet another tribute to the wonders science has allowed us to pursue.

    1. I agree, I think that her discovery is very fascinating and if scientists are able to discover if these are her remains or not, this will be the start to a huge scientific breakthrough.

  3. I perused the article about the iceberg, "An Iceberg Flipped Over, and Its Underside Is Breathtaking"; I do not know anything about icebergs so I thought I would read it. Long story short it was about how when icebergs melt their equilibrium can become off balance causing the berg to flip over. In this case the iceberg flipped and what was left was a beautiful mix of blues and greens. The colors are due to minerals caught in the very very cold ice or red light being trapped causing the blues and greens to be portrayed. I think this is good news because it does not happen all the time and looks really cool! I think this is interesting because I did not know anything about ice bergs especially that they could flip and I think that is really cool! I wonder how many ice bergs flip over.

  4. I read the article about the iceberg flipping over. I never knew icebergs could flip, but when their equilibrium is messed up, they can, and the result is breathtaking. When an iceberg flips, its colors are a vibrant blue, as for it has not been covered in snow and dirt yet. I would love to have the experience to see a flipped iceberg. They look so pretty! I also checked out the family’s page who took the iceberg photo, and they have a lot of other really pretty pictures! The best ones were obviously the flipped ones though.

  5. This week, I read the article “Bones From Pacific Island Likely Those Of Amelia Earhart, Researchers Say”. I think that if this is Amelia Earhart, then this is definitely good news because this means researchers have finally solved the mystery of Earhart’s disappearance that has been studied for decades. This article definitely peaked my interest because Amelia Earhart’s disappearance is so legendary and well known, so to find bones that could have been hers is definitely a very interesting discovery and also a huge advancement in the world of science and history. By measuring the bones and trying to figure out if they belonged to Earhart, they said it is a definite possibility that these are the bones of Amelia Earhart. Overall, I think that if scientists can prove that these are the remains of Amelia Earhart, it will play a huge part in history and will put an end to the ongoing investigation of her disappearance.

  6. With international women's day passing a few days ago, I thought it would be appropriate to read the article about Amelia Earhart. According to the article, scientists believe that they have found bones in the pacific islands to be Amelia’s! This isn’t the first time people have thought that they’ve found Earhart’s remains, they’ve done multiple tests throughout the decades that she’s been missing. With today’s technology, we are closer than ever to recovering the famous pilots bones and many think that we’ve finally done it! I think this is awesome news because it shows just how advanced technology has become. This article was very interesting because I’ve always found Amelia Earhart’s story to be so mysterious. I mean, how could her body be missing for so many years without a trace, it’s insane!

  8. I read the article, "An Iceberg Flipped Over and It's Bottom is Breathtaking." The pictures in this article were quite breathtaking. I really think it would be amazing to see this happen in real life. I'm definitely curious to see what it would look like in real life! In the article it said that these aren't common but I do wonder how many people have seen these in real life or if anyone has every seen in happen right before their eyes. When the iceberg flips it is literally like a jewel or almost like a sapphire because there is no dirt or snow on the iceberg.

  9. I read the article about the iceberg flipping over, I thought it was interesting about how it looked so clear after being flipped over like that for so long. But I wound it interesting that this has been occurring more frequently because of climate change. But I wonder why suddenly this is occurring and why this is suddenly coming up in nature today. I also found this article intriguing how the icebergs flips.

  10. I read the article about the possible remains of Amelia Earhart. The article explains how much is unknown about Earhart’s death. Almost 80 years ago, bones were found on a island along the Pacific. Because of newly developed skills and inventions, a scientist came to the conclusion that the remains are likely to be hers. Although the remains were previously thought to be those of a man, a scientist used a new technology called Fordisc to come to a better conclusion. The measurements of the bones and her original clothing measurements are very similar. I find it interesting that after all these years scientists still have no official results as to what happened.

If it is Amelia Earhart's body, it would be huge news because that mean they have discovered the mystery behind her disappearance. 12. I read the article about how a massive and old iceberg flipped over and was truly breathtaking. The iceberg flipped over due to old age and melting. I think that this isn't good because the iceberg heated up due to global warming, but also global warming caused a beautiful sight to many. But that still doesn't mean global warming is a good thing and if humans don't change, this Earth could be rendered useless. I found this article fascinating because marine biology and pretty much anything about the ocean has interested me since a young age.

  13. I read the article about Amelia Earhart’s bones being found. I chose to read this article because I thought it would be really interesting and exiting if her bones were actually found. It was a mystery that has left people curious for a very long time. If the remains found from the Pacific Island are truely hers, it would uncover more theories about her death and leave more for scientists to study about. It could possibly help the studies on the Bermuda Triangle, since her death has been said to correlate with it.

  14. While reading the article about the recent discovery of (potentially) Amelia Earhart’s bones, I questioned a lot of the credibility and research. This research says that Earhart was the only person documented at the site of the discovery years ago. Of course this is a credible source, but it still makes me wonder if the bones could belong to anyone else, despite the matching size and length of them. It also makes me curious is researchers are simply convincing themselves that they definitely belong to Amelia since this has been one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century. I’m not sure if I believe 100% that the bones are hers, but the evidence, (if true) adds up pretty well. I think it’s awesome that we are finding more discoveries like these, because in the future, they could lead to one after another, and we could soon be solving even bigger mysteries.

  16. I read the article “Bones from Pacific island likely those of Amelia Earhart, researchers say,” and have heard about this topic prior to reading the article. Personally, I don’t think the bones are hers, although the evidence is compelling. Dr. D. W. Hoodless, the man who first examined the bones, isn’t exactly the most reliable source, judging on how forensic anthropology wasn’t advanced enough yet to make those conclusions on the gender. There are endless theories on what happened, and this theory isn’t one I can’t quite believe. However, if anthropologists can somehow get ahold of the bones once again, maybe they can solve one of the biggest mysteries of all time.

  17. I read the article on the breathtaking iceberg that flipped over, this iceberg was about 30 feet above the sea water. When the filmmaker saw this iceberg it was free of debris, glassy, and was aqua-green ice with water flowing inside of it.That view must have been breathtaking and amazingly beautiful; they described it as a piece of jewelry. Studies have shown this iceberg has recently flipped. Apparently, lately studies have shown because of climate change more icebergs have been flipping. I was wondering does these glaciers flipping leave a negative affect, or no effect at all?

  18. I read the CNN article about the bones of Amelia Earhart. In 1940 bones were found on the island of Nikumaroro that were later decided to be from a male body by Dr Hoodless. Just recently though, Richard Jantz looked over the measurements of the bones and concluded that they could very well be the bones of Amelia Earhart, the first woman pilot to span the Atlantic but unfortunately disappeared. Jantz wants to take newer up to date tests on the bones to figure out the gender and origin of the bones and hopefully end the search for Amelia Earhart.

  19. I read the article about the iceberg that flipped over and I found this article very interesting. For starters, the iceberg was beautiful. I find it very interesting how they can flip and make the bottom part that has been underwater forever on top. I was also surprised that only 10% of the iceberg is above water. Icebergs are really big, so it's crazy to think about how much of it is actually underwater.

  20. I read the article "Bones from Pacific island likely those of Amelia Earhart". Dr. Jantz used a new type of forensic anthropology method called Fordisc to determine the gender and ancestry of the bones. 21. I read the article about the iceberg that flipped over which was truly beautiful. It was interesting that most icebergs that flip over usually float around in the middle of the ocean but this one had a stationary spot. 26. For this weeks blog post I read the article about the flipped iceberg. This iceberg was discovered by some people that were exploring Cierva Cove. the structure rose 30 feet above the water and contained many brilliant colors as well as free of debris, exposing a glassy, aqua surface. As noted in the article, the ice of this iceberg is probably really old. The green and blue colors come from the absorbed elements that seeped through the ice over time. I found this iceberg article to be fascinating because i’ve never heard anything like it before. They mentioned that it’s like seeing a double rainbow but in my opinion it’s 10 times cooler because how often is anybody going to find a multicolored glassy iceberg.

And I've come to the conclusion that this is extremely good news, for it shows that we have still have so much to discover. I find it quite interesting that this supercolony has such a massive population yet we’ve only found it recently. The scientists in the article question the resources in that area if they were sufficient enough to grow an entire population. Throughout the article there were pictures and short videos from drone footage, this allowed me to truly visualize every penguin in this colony, not just be reading a number.

Surprisingly, there was no debris and it appeared to be very old. The iceberg got it's interesting colors by elements seeping through the ice. This is very interesting because nothing has been recorded like this. The colors are very interesting and beautiful.

My reaction to this article is that I am very excited that there is finally being good break through into the “cure” if you would for cancer. There will not be one drug that kills all cancer but any drugs that we can get to kill a form of cancer is great. 32. I read the article about the icebergs flipping over and when I read the title I didn't think that it would be that big of a deal because I thought it would just look like normal ice; however because of the ice being compressed for thousands upon thousands of years. I also thought that it was sad because this phenomenon is increasing due to global warming which will make a lot of really cool pictures but also icebergs release thousand year old Co2 which makes global warming increase exponentially. Some questions I have are: how many of these happen a year? How come this happens? and finally why do icebergs pile up vertically?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I read the one about flipping icebergs. I think it is interesting that a mass so large can flip over in the water and expose its shiny side. I think this is also a problem though. The reason these icebergs are flipping is because global warming is causing icebergs to melt and change the equilibrium of the ice making it flip. This melting is causing massive amounts of co2 deposits in glaciers and icebergs to be released in the air. Its glassy aquatic look of the bottom of the iceberg is interesting but it marks a problem.

  34. I read about the iceberg flipping over and it was very interesting. A man was traveling to Iceland and he saw an iceberg that was flipped upside down. 35. I remember reading and learning about Amelia Earhart, and wondering how no one in the world had ever found any trace of her plane crash. But, this further information on the bones found that could possibly belong to the pilot Amelia Earhart, which was lost at sea, gives me a sense of hope that scientists can find lost things at sea from the past and the future. Also, other theories believe that Amelia actually survived the crash and thad aken shelter at the nearest land. If that theory is true, I cannot imagine the struggles Amelia would have had to face by starting completely over in an unknown place.

  36. I read the article about Amelia Earhart, a lot of people think that Amelia Earhart died in a plane crash and her body was never recovered, but as it turns out she was most likely a castaway, and her body ended up on an island in Japan. The bones were originally determined to be male and thrown away, but scientists are using scaled object and her clothing to correctly identify her as the one who washed up. I think that those really were her bones, and that she didn’t die in a plane crash but she survived it and lived for days and weeks on an island looking for help, but eventually died and fell into the ocean.

  38. I read the CNN article about how scientists believe old bones found on an island may Be Amelia Earhart’s. They were found there in 1940 by a scientist who claimed they were that of a man who had washed up in a shipwreck, but new studies show that those claims might not be accurate. Furthermore, new scientists consulted her tailor’s notes and measurements to almost conclude that they match. This is good news because now we are much closer to figuring out his mystery and possibly many others. It will be interesting to see if any other stories like this come up later on.
