Change the World

Happy Earth Day.  I truly believe that we all can change the world.  I know that I am the ultimate optimist, but I have faith in mankind.  April 22, 1970 was the very first Earth Day.  Clearly, things have changed a ton since 1970.

I love this picture.  Can you imagine if our entire class brought brooms to downtown Crystal Lake and started sweeping?  It would be amazing.

Did you see the Google Doodle this morning?

http://time.com/4751376/google-doodle-earth-day-tips-climate-change/

Did you go to the March for Science in Chicago?

https://sciencemarchchicago.org/

How did you "Take a Stand for Science" today?

The very first Earth Day was focused on educating the public about the environment.  What is the history of Earth Day?  What does it mean to you?  What impact has Earth Day had on our society and our world?  What impact has Earth Day had on you?  In a scholarly paragraph, I would like you to write about Earth Day.  You don't necessarily have to answer my questions.  As long as you have a well-crafted paragraph about Earth Day, I am going to be flexible.  This can be a paragraph about your opinions, a paragraph about the history of Earth Day, a paragraph about your experience at the March for Science (extra credit if you go to the March and show me pictures....totally awesome) or a paragraph about what the government is doing to promote Earth Day issues.

Then  you can go and see "Born in China."  It was fantastic.

  1. Earth day is just the start of helping the beautiful planet we call home. When there was a 3 million gallon oil spill in 1969, a man named Gaylord Nelson had enough. He wanted to create a huge protest against the negative things impacting our planet. The first Earth day on April 22nd, 1970, attracted around 20 million people to demonstrations, rallies, lectures, and marches across the country. There wasn’t a reason why Earth Day was on April 22nd that was related to the earth or environment. April 22nd was chosen because it was between midterms and final exams on college campuses and it was before spring break for high schools/ primary schools. These rallies eventually started to lead the passage of the Clean air, Clean water, and Endangered species acts. In just 47 years, earth day has led to a lot of positives for the planet, but is the rest of the world celebrating earth day and what actions are they taking. I am all for Earth day and I think our next step is to think about the Earth everyday and not just once a year.

    2. I like how you said that we need to think of earth day as everyday because that is so true! It's important we take action to help our planet as much as we can.

  2. As a younger child, in school we always did things such as going outside and picking up garbage or planting flowers for Earth Day, but I really didn't understand what this whole day was about, so I looked up a few things about it. The first Earth day was in 1970 after the massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. As we all know, Earth Day was this past Saturday, April 22. As I was reading I thought, what is something I can do to help? Some things I found were planting trees, picking up litter, volunteer at an earth day event, watch my water use, unplug appliances and not use plastic water bottles. Just these little things can help change the world, but these things shouldn't only be done on earth day, they should be done year round. I feel as though we the people take this earth for granted and don't realize all the wonderful things is gives us everyday. As Mike Degory once said, “you don't realize how special it is until it's gone”. We need to stop only thinking about our needs and start thinking about the earth's, especially on Earth Day.

  3. Earth Day is on April 22nd, and was created so people can appreciate the earth, celebrate, and get involved in service projects. The first Earth Day was 1970. It all started from an oil spill, that started a rally of 20 million people to help clean it up, a “teach-in”. Groups that have been fighting against environmental issues all joined together to create a day to focus on on the earth. In 1990 this day went global. Earth day now is a way for people to realize the problems with the earth, and just take a little step that day to help the environment. The activities that take place on Earth Day vary from planting and gardening to helping out with recycling projects. I feel bad because i haven't celebrated Earth Day in a while, but after reading these articles i know there is so much that i can do to help preserve our environment. Earth Day has to be taken more seriously and be utilized as a day to take time to help out the earth and give back. Our environment, especially in Crystal Lake is beautiful, and it's important to keep it that way!

  4. When I think of Earth day I think of helping the environment such as planting more trees or cleaning garbage from fields. However I don't participate in earth day as much as I should, but what I do remember from past years, my class from middle or elementary school would go outside and help out the environment. An impact that earth day has had on society and the world is that it made and still does make people become aware of what's going on in the environment around us and makes people think of how they can help with those issues. The history of the idea of earth day originated from the book “Beyond Earth Day” which was written by Gaylord Nelson. Ever since then it has been celebrated throughout the world today.

  5. Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea to launch earth day. The first Earth Day was on April 22,1970. The date was chosen because it fell between midterm and final exams for most schools, resulting in more people being able to attend. Personally i think Earth Day is a great idea; it gets people thinking more about the environment and what they can do to help it. I also think it's cool that a company as huge as Google promotes Earth Day, which also helps people get out and become involved in the movement.

  6. I think that earth day is a good thing for promoting change and stopping the pollution of earth. The message that Earth day sends is a positive one but unfortunately, not as many people participate in actual Earth day activities. Instead of just raising awareness, I think that people should actually do something to help the Earth. Raising awareness does not mean anything if nothing is done to stop this issue. As a society, I think that most people already know what humans are doing for the environment. If this is true, than why would we raise awareness rather than actually contributing to help stop this issue. I realize that the intentions of Earth day are good, but I think that more needs to be done than having a holiday (if its considered a Holiday).

    1. I agree. Having everyone do something good for the Earth on one day compared to the 364 days where many do not care is a good place to start but I hope it is extended to like a month in the future.

  7. The history of Earth Day was started by a man named Gaylord Nelson. In 1969 an enormous oil spill occurred which resulted in Nelson getting the idea for an Earth Day. Arguing everyone was noticing environmental deterioration besides political establishments, he decided to launch an Earth Day. Although Nelson did not single-handedly launch Earth Day on its own, many other events, pictures, and authors influenced the day. On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day occurred, attracting 1 out of every 10 Americans to rallies, lectures, and marches. Due to Earth Day, the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts were passed, which were significant as the political establishments finally acknowledged environmental issues. Nelson said that the acknowledgments from these political establishments were very significant as without them the demonstrations would be unsuccessful. Nelson later passed away in 2005, but his legacy continues with Earth Day being acknowledged by masses around the world.

  8. Earth day
The idea of having an “Earth day”was first brought by Gaylord Nelson shortly after he witnesses the massive damage done from an oil spill in 1969. Nelson wanted the public to be more aware about the damages that were happening to the environment, so he hired staff to help get people to protest their common values. By 1970 Earth day was founded. Since then Earth day has become more recognized each year. Even though it has become more popular, many americans still aren’t part of it because of their lack of belief in climate change and support of protecting the environment. Earth day to me is a day to reflect on the impact I have on the environment and the impact the environment has on me. Understanding the effects of our everyday actions is the first step to change. If everyone each Earth day decided to change one of their bad habits it could really make an impact. Overall I think Earth day is a day we shouldn’t forget about or commercialize because it is serving a great purpose.

    1. I totally agree, we need to understand the impacts of our actions every day because understanding this would be taking a step towards working to decrease it. Every person changing one bad habit would have a great effect on the environment.

  9. Earth Day was sparked by a huge oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara. Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. senator, witnessed this event which inspired him to launch the first “Earth Day”. The first Earth Day was in 1970, meant to make the country aware of the troubles on our earth. The 10th Earth day anniversary was when Americans had noticed and understood the concern over the worsening of the environment. To me, Earth Day should be every day. Every day, we should be aware of the environment around us and make sure we take care of it. Earth Day is good motivation for cleaning up trash on the side of the streets, but if we don’t put it there in the first place, it would all around benefit the environment. I love how everyone gets excited to help the earth we live on and each little thing can count. All of these things should be done every single day, and this is what I think Nelson was hoping for. He wanted everyone to be informed about the things happening to our environment and start making a change. I think he wanted everyday to be earth day. Earth Day is so great because it's not hard to help and participate! The smallest things make the biggest difference.

    1. That's crazy that it took 10 years for Americans to notice that we need to help the planet. I agree that we need to not only make people aware that they need to help the planet, but try to stop people from even throwing trash on the street.

    2. I like your point of "Earth Day should be everyday. Everyday, we should be aware of the environment around us and make sure we take care of it," because I think that it's a valid point. Many of us will toss away our trash without a second thought of where it goes or about how it could have been recycled. I like how we have Earth Day as 1 specific and designated day in the year but I agree and say that we should have Earth Day more frequently.

  10. I chose the article “The first Earth Day: A Brief History” because I want to find out how Earth Day came about, and why it is so important. I learned that former Senator Gaylord Nelson had an idea to have the first “Earth Day” in the summer of 1969 when he was on an environmental tour at the same time that conferences on opposing war in Vietnam vere very common. He noticed that everyone was paying attention to the fact that the earth was starting to decline- everyone except for political establishment. Finally, on April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day occurred and captivated around 20 million people to join marches and protests all over the nation. I find it very interesting that Nelson considered students when choosing the date of the holiday since since he purposefully placed it between midterm and final exams. Because of this, over 1,500 colleges and universities, 10,000 grade schools and high schools, and 2,000 community groups joined in recognising Earth Day. To me, this paints the beautiful picture of everyone around the world joining hands and collaborating to improve the world we live in. By 1990, the holiday had spread to 200 million people in 141 countries, and now, today, more than one billion people participate in the largest civic observance in the world. This has impacted our world because “conservatives were for it. Liberals were for it. Democrats, Republicans and independents were for it. So were the ins, outs, executive and legislative branches” (New York Times). How fascinating is it that all parties with very different world and political views can all agree on one thing: our world needs to be preserved and loved because it is our home.

  11. April 22nd marks Earth Day, an annual event highlighting support for our environment’s protection. Originally masterminded in 1970, by then-US Senator Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day is now observed in 192 countries across the globe, with over a billion people celebrating the world’s largest secular holiday. Here’s a look into our little corner of this worldly event. Crystal Lake hosts several events in honor and support of Earth Day. Crystal Lake’s Community Clean-Up Day is held on Earth Day and coordinated by the chamber of commerce. My Mom helped organize the city's first clean-up day back in 1994, where volunteers spread out across the city to clean-up trash along roadsides and in parks. Now the event also includes other environmentally friendly things like document-shredding, prescription drug take back, and shoe recycling. Another Earth Day event in our city is the Earth Day Trail Race held at VA and Sterne’s Woods. This race is in its 6th year. Money raised from the race helps the Crystal Lake Park District and its environmental protection efforts. The McHenry County Conservation District and The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County host an Earth Day celebration in Crystal Lake at the Prairieview Education Center. This is a fun and informative family event. Puppet shows, crafts and games teach kids how to be kind to our Earth. Different organizations and booths are there to educate adults how to live greener lives. Household recycling is also a part of this event. You can bring them a variety of your unwanted household items, like small appliances, microwaves, batteries, and even Christmas lights. As this paragraph comes to a close, I wish this subject / blog prompt was last week’s. It would’ve been helpful for those looking for a way to celebrate this worldly event right here in Crystal Lake. File it in your memory-bank for Earth Day 2018!

  12. The first earth day was created when the author of Beyond Earth Day went on an environmental tour in Vietnam and noticed everyone saw the environmental deterioration except for the “political establishment”. Earth Day is one of the only “holidays” of the year that causes people to really cherish the environment. It has impacted our society because it causes people to open their eyes to something bigger that’s not just going on in their lives, and causes them to want to help the planet. After it was launched, Earth Day caused 20 million people to demonstrate, march, lecture, and rally about the planet and environmental awareness. Even now it continues to motivate people to look up, and want to make the environment better.

  13. Earth Day is a holiday celebrated every April 22nd, it began in 1970 because of gas usage and air pollution causing the Earth some environmental concerns. In 1970 people became conscious of these problems on our planet, so 20 million people came together on the streets to demonstrate for a healthy Earth. I was lucky enough to spend my Earth Day outside refereeing some soccer matches and going on a bike ride, it was such a beautiful day! I think Earth Day has made a great impact on our society. When I imagine the 1970s, I think of restoration and the color green. Humans before the 70s seemed to take advantage of the new technology only to cause harm to the Earth, and I think it is truly amazing that we came together to make the Earth a green and (for the most part) happy place! I just love living in such a bright place and I hope that all of us can contribute to helping make the planet even better!

  14. A massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969 led to the creation of Earth day. April 22nd it is a day to focus on the environment and spread awareness of pollution. The first Earth day in 1970, 20 million Americans participated in rallies to promote a healthy and sustainable environment. For years, we’ve celebrated Earth Day at school by cleaning up the outside of the school and being taught about the product of activities that have produced negative effects. This year, Earth Day Network partnered with March for science and organized rallies, specifically on National Mall in Washington DC. This year was the first year I went out and did something to support the environment. Before Earth Day was just another day, after reading articles and learning the facts, Earth Day still just another day, but instead I want to put a better effort into helping the environment everyday.

  15. On April 22, 1970 the first Earth Day was celebrated as a response to the various environmental issues like the Santa Barbara oil spill. The celebration drew 20 million people, which is one out of every ten Americans. This annual gathering/rally has already accomplished much for the environment such as leading to the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts being passed. To me Earth Day is a day to reflect on your impact on the environment whether it be going out into nature, going without electronics for the day, or even just taking a shorter shower. There are many things that we can do to lessen the horrible impact our pollution does to the Earth and I think Earth Day is a great day to really do these things and try to understand your own impact on the environment. It’s an important day to really appreciate the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it. Earth Day has had an amazing impact on the environment and hopefully will continue to in the future. In my opinion Earth Day should be an even bigger deal than it is now because since the 1970s we have discovered that we are causing a global increase in temperature which is a problem that will require everyone truly caring about the Earth to be solved.

  16. I’ve always loved nature since forever, the beauty, and the ugly side. Nature is amazing and I love that we have Earth day to celebrate it. But it’s kind of an annoyance that we celebrate on one day. Like, isn’t possible to take care of our planet everyday? For Earth day, I think it’s a great way to educate everyone about our declining planet and to do something about it. Our planet is extremely important to our species and others. Some people may not care too much, but once nature starts lashing back, it’s time for them to step up and help the planet. This goes to everyone else who care about the planet too. Educate our people and make a plan!

Earth day doesn’t really mean anything to me, I care about the earth everyday, I feel like I do my part to help the earth and why should anything change. I will admit I don’t really know the history behind it, but I probably should. The march for science was something I didn’t know about till I saw the little thing for it on snapchat but when I did actually find out about it I thought it was pretty interesting.

  18. I think Earth Day is a pretty cool day. It is a day to do something good for the Earth and to recognize the beauty the Earth is. If we all did something, even something small for Earth Day, we would all be stepping in the right direction to make our home a better place. The pollution our Earth has is not good and something needs to be done about it. I almost feel like there needs to be more Earth days in one year. I mean there is too much that needs to be done, and one day isn't going to help as much as we could. Even if it isn't Earth day, we should all do a good deed for our Earth. Whether it's just picking up trash or saving electricity, it could help. Overall I think Earth day is a good holiday, and it should be recognized more every year.

  19. Earth Day was made to educate people about the environment. It led to creating foundations like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Clean Air Act, Water Quality Improvement Act, and the Endangered Species Act. The small original group of 85 people rallied 20 million people across the U.S. in 1970. Nowadays, more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities. However, the impact is slightly less now after being many years, but Earth Day is still important to remind people of thinking about the threats to the planet, ways to protect the environment, and humanity’s values.

  20. The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970 and it was to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. To me Earth Day is to bring awareness to how we treat our earth and to do something to help keep it as beautiful and clean as we can. At my old school we highly valued the environment and to us everyday was Earth Day. Why only care about taking care of the environment on one day when you can do a little something everyday? We picked up trash on the sides of roads and pulled up invasive species of plants, it was actually really fun and rewarding to see the change that we had made. Garbage is never going to stop accumulating though, there will always be some trash laying around somewhere, but we can make that garbage pile smaller, we can be more conscious with how we are treating this earth and hopefully some day earth will be as stable and clean as it can be.

  21. Back in elementary school we used to celebrate Earth Day by getting to go outside, then clean up any trash we found on the ground and then enjoy what this planet has to offer. I never really understood what it meant except getting to go and have fun outside. I decided to look up what Earth Day is. I found out that Earth day began in 1970 after a huge oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The senator of Wisconsin at the time was annoyed that our environment never came up in politics or in the media so he created Earth Day, April 22nd, 1970. I could not believe that people didn’t care enough about our world until 1970. At least now we can celebrate the Earth and all its glory not only on Earth Day but everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Over 1 Billion people participate in Earth day worldwide each year. That sounds like a lot right? Well what if we all did something small every day for a year like pick up a piece of garbage? Then we could appreciate the environment just a little it more. I never really participated in Earth day, but I still try to make our environment a better place. So, what if 1 billion people helped every day? The world we live in would be a much nicer place.

  23. When you think of Earth Day, you think of all the people trying to make an effort towards a better way of living, which to me, is awesome. I personally need to make it a priority to make the world and environment around me a better place. However, it is awesome to see the improvements that our world as a whole is making, and the strides that we taking to better our societies around us. Earth Day Network is launching a campaign for “global environmental and climate literacy by Earth Day 2020”, which is cool because that is the year we graduate. They are dedicated to “ensuring that every student around the world graduates high school as an environmental and climate literate citizen, ready to take action and be a voice for change.” This is great to see because when all of the shenanigans happening that makes this world so detrimental at some times, it is really nice to see that there are people out there who really want to make a difference. Another awesome thing that the Earth Day Network is doing is that they are making it a point to educate the students in K-12 schools on how to keep this Earth intact, which is another great sign that we are moving forward. I really never thought much of Earth Day, but I have come to the realization that it is more important than we think.

  24. It's really upsetting that now a days our generation could careless about the Earth, of course there are some people who are trying to make a difference. To hear everyday from older generations saying that "we are the laziest generation" is not okay. How does this relate to Earth Day? Well, I bet if I went into different classrooms and asked sixty kids what they're doing for Earth Day I bet thirty-five to forty-five of them would tell me that they are busy and can't do anything. Why? Because we believe that our lives are more important than our community! And that's ridiculous! Because when all else collapses in the world, do you know what will still be here? Our environment, our planet. And we are doing a really shoddy job at keeping it running. Some would argue that people are trying to help and yes that would be true, but not everyone. And yes, that seems like a stretch to get everyone to help, but if we got forty percent of the whole population of the planet to agree to helping, then that'll make even more of a difference. The idea of having a day called "Earth Day" is honestly pointless. You may be thinking "how could she go from promoting Earth Day to shooting down the idea?", if you think about it, what's the point of having Earth Day where everyone helps the environment for a day when you could just always try to help year round? I propose for those of you who don't celebrate Earth Day to try this Earth Day to help clean up a public place, or to ride your bike to the different events you're going to, or even to just carpool to help lessen air pollution. Just a little bit from everyone can go a long way.

It's awful to hear these remarks about how lazy we are since we have most things done for us while our eyes are super glued to our screens. I often try to make some of my decisions in my life based off of 'How will this affect me and the future?' along with 'Would this decision affect my kids/my grandchildren positively?' I don't want to die knowing that all of the generations after us will demand answers about 'Why didn't we do better with the one planet that we have?' since we didn't try with changing our old ways for the better.

  25. Largely ignored, Earth day has had small influence upon society in cleaning and maintaining the earth. As a student I have only taken action in grade school twice. Well most excuses come from having no time or money to spend on gardening or planting trees or even picking up garbage, the most simple time efficient tasks are also ignored when Earth day arrives. Instead of planting one could simply take a shorter shower which saves water which then diverts less water from our rivers, bays, and estuaries, which helps keep the environment healthy. These simple things are highly ignored on Earth day, when they are cost and time efficient. In my opinion Earth day is very beneficial to our environment but only under the circumstance that more people will take part in it.

  26. Personally, nature has always fascinated and I've always enjoyed it. I do try my best to help the Earth and be able to keep it clean and prosperous, but tons of people don't understand the importance and value of keeping our Earth clean and healthy. I do believe that in schools there should be more education as to how we can protect our Earth and the history behind Earth Day. It would also be fun to take kids down to Chicago on a field trip of sorts, and educate them about what it takes to prevent further destruction of our Earth.

  27. Earth Day is very important, considering that new people are being born each day and since construction sites are expanding. I think that Earth Day is a great day to raise awareness for the effects of global warming and what we can do to save the planet. I've never really done anything for earth day before, but I'm hoping to do something to improve the earth at least once everyday. Bottom line is that everyday should be earth day, we should all be doing something to keep the earth clean and healthy. After all this is the only earth that we have.

  28. Earth Day to me is a day where you help out our environment a little. You could go as far as planting trees in your community or just picking up someones trash that they might've dropped. Every little bit counts. I remember back in seventh grade, everyone went out one day and planted trees with our science classes around Earth day. It was nice to know that we were helping out our environment and making a big difference in our community.

  29. Earth Day is super important holiday that people don’t take seriously enough. Everyday should be Earth Day, why should we ever limit ourselves to just one day of helping the Earth. If people do one thing a day to limit hurting the Earth then maybe we wouldn’t be facing some of the terrifying problems we are today. We have to live on our Earth, there isn’t a planet B, this is all we have so we need to learn what we can do to maintain it. Earth Day makes people more aware of the situation at hand, which is fantastic, and hopefully, one day we won’t need Earth Day because people will be taking care of the Earth so well, it will no longer be necessary. At this point in time, Earth is all we have to provide us with a place to survive, so mankind as a whole needs to figure out how we can conserve the planet.

  30. Earth day has always been a little confusing for me because when it happened at my elementary school we had a talent show, and some of the acts were actually amazing. Then in middle school we just didn't really pay any attention to it so i never have really had the chance to think about it. I know it's to celebrate our lives that are still here on a seemingly healthy planet but i also know that what people do to try to help the environment is crazy. I once say a picture of a stack of newspaper that was three quarters the height of the woman standing behind it. When they explained that that much paper would have to be recycled to save just one little tree, i was super surprised. I wish i could really take part in these activities and help out because the human race is by far the most powerful thing on earth. Our brains and bodies on mass could do just about anything if we all tried our hardest. The one flaw is that no one want to follow someone else the wnt to lead something like that. Thats why its just so hard to really make a noticeable improvement on the earth, we are doing what water does to a rock when it drips on it little by little over years and years. We are slowly changing the earth and those who are trying are doing great. Once we all learn to work together then we will save mother earth.

  31. An oil spill in Santa Barbara, along with some other environmental dangers, initiated the first Earth day. Earth day has been practiced as a holiday for many years, since it was introduced on April 22, 1970. But from that day, its popularity has started to dwindle as people do celebrate it less and less. For instance, my family do very little on Earth day, we haven't even acknowledged it after I reached the age of seven. Before that though, we would go to fairs with my extended family and get outside more or do something along those lines. Due to conflicting work schedules, my family often find it and to get together in the first place. After my parents got divorced, it got even harder and eventually we only ever got together for the more popular holidays (Christmas & Thanksgiving).

  32. earth day is very important in The United States because we produce the most trash out of any other country. When earth day rolls around, everyone remembers that this earth is alot more important than people think. We can't just keep dumping garbage into the ocean or landfills, at some point we need to watch how we are consuming. Bring your own bag for groceries. Carry a reusable water bottle. It's little things like this that can help reduce the negative impact that humans are leaving on the earth. And if we don't change our ways soon, we will have to leave this earth without any way of going.

  33. I think that Earth Day is a good way to get people to recognize the importance of protecting our planet and it’s valuable resources. In elementary school, every year we would have an assembly celebrating Earth Day and recycling; I think it is a good idea to teach kids to reduce, reuse, and recycle, while they’re young. Although, saving the planet shouldn’t be emphasized only one day a year because these are things we should be doing every day. Getting together on a day like this is good, but we shouldn’t only help out one time, we should always be thinking about ways that we can help to protect wildlife, mountains, forests, the ice caps, and more. Earth Day is not just a day for you do go out and help pick up litter, and then think that you did your part, it is for you to realize that the world faces huge threats every day and we should be doing everything we can to help protect it.

  34. I think the only time I did something for Earth day was in Elementary School. I probably haven't took the time out of my day since then. But I usually recycle, trying to do my best to keep the Earth clean. But one person doing something can't make a difference of something so big. There needs to be lots of people to help clean, not just one. Cleaning the Earth would need to take a lot more than one person to clean it. This is why I believe that everyone should take a little bit of time out of their day to do something for our one and only Earth. In just 30 minutes, you could pick up trash or help recycle. So I think if everyone could did a little bit to help our Earth, the Earth would be a lot cleaner place.

  35. I have a personal history with Earth day, as my birthday is on the 10th of this month, every year I would go see the new nature movie that Disney would produce (and I’d make sure to go during opening week too!). I’ve always had a fascination with animals since I was younger, of course, who didn’t? Seeing these movies was mind-blowing! Disney never failed to amaze me with how much personality they were able to pack into an hour or two, and with their help my love for nature has never ceased. In general, I think more importance should be placed on Earth Day because, as of now, we only have one planet to call home, and we are currently not doing our part to protect it. Every little thing could help, from recycling to buying reusable grocery bags. Big projects aren’t the only way to keep Earth healthy, and more people need to recognize that. Everyone is able to do a little something that will ultimately improve the overall state of our planet.

    1. I completely agree with you, because we do only have one planet and if we one day have to move to another planet, it means we have completely killed this one. That'd just be too much.

  36. Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd due to it falling in the middle of midterms and finals for college students and a little before summer break for middle and high school students. We celebrate Earth Day to bring up public awareness surrounding the environment and pollution. Earth Day started back in 1970, after former Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson witnessed the damages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. He wrote a book a little after the oil spill, explaining the idea of nationwide protests that would spark conversation about what’s being done to our environment. Thousands of schools and groups came together, organizing events for the better of and education of our environment. In 1990, Earth Day was celebrated amongst 141 countries and in 2000, 184 countries and over 5,000 environmental groups participated in the day of awareness. Today, over 1 billion people partake and get involved with celebrating Earth Day. There are many ways for participating in Earth Day like recycling trash in the park/neighborhood, biking/walking to work instead of driving or even participating in a protest/march. According the Chicago Tribune, “An estimated 40,000 scientists and supporters descended onto Columbus Drive on Saturday [Earth Day 2017] to stand up for scientific research and the initiatives they feel are increasingly under siege by the policies of President Donald Trump’s administration.

  37. The very first Earth Day had drawn the attention of about 20 million people. The majority of the people who first "celebrated" Earth Day were students. The acknowledgement of what was happening to the environment on Earth Day even caused acts like the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species one. Globalization of Earth Day occurred in 1990 involving 200 million people in 141 countries. Earth Days have since then occurred every year to keep the public educated on how the environment has been suffering at our hands. The average amount of people who participate in Earth Day has increased to upwards of 1 billion people each year. Almost everyone was in support of Earth Day including liberals, conservatives, Democrats, and Republicans. Earth Day has always and will continue to draw the public's attention to what is happening to our environment.

  38. Earth Day is very important because everyone should respect the Earth because we are here for life. Earth Day was first created in 1970 after a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara,California. It was made to educate the public on the environment because it can often be neglected. Many people celebrate Earth Day by spending the day outside, going to a park, planting a tree, or like my elementary school, we would go the following week without screens for TV Turn-Off week. On the first Earth day in 1970, an approximate 20 million people joined in an environmentalist march.

  39. The first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970 and was created by Gaylord Nelson. After Nelson watched a massive oil spill off of Santa Barbara, he wanted to do something to help the environment and stop future problems like this. The first Earth Day attracted 20 million people, a lot of which were students in varying grades. People attended demonstrations, rallies, marches, and lectures all across the country. These rallies helped create and pass Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. As of today, more than 1 billion participate in Earth Day. When I was in elementary school, my teachers always had me do a project for Earth Day. I really enjoyed knowing that the small act I was doing, would help make a huge impact on the world. Now that I’m older, I don’t do as much as I can to help the Earth, but I’m going to start trying to help out more. The Earth is our home, and we should take care of it everyday, instead of just on Earth Day.

  40. I think that Earth Day is a brilliant idea designed to raise awareness about the damage we are doing to our planet, and hopefully inspire people to try and slow that damage. Not only has Earth day raised awareness for helping the Earth it raises awareness for the organizations that are working to save the Earth and brings total strangers together to do so. It provides a day when organizations can get thousands of people to think about the Earth and thus come volunteer to help clean it up. Huge beach cleanups, and wood cleanups are scheduled and thousands of people gather to do their best to reverse the damage we have done. Personally I have only participated in 2 or 3 earth day cleanups and while it was only a small area it truly did make a difference for the creatures and plants that lived there. This cleanup wasn't just about fixing one small area it was also about meeting new people, and bringing them all together, uniting them towards a common goal, saving the Earth.

  41. Earth day was inspired by an oil spill and a great senator who came up with the idea to help clean the earth for a day. The idea that the earth should just be helped one day is very odd considering that if everyday we picked up our waste the enviromental impact would be much greater.

    1. I agree with you because if we just picked up the trash in the first place there would be no reason to have to spend a whole day trying to pick everything up.

  42. Earth Day comes straight from the mind of Gaylord Nelson, a former Senator of Wisconsin. After viewing an oil spill Nelson came up with Earth Day. He wanted to bring awareness to the damaging of the Earth and succeeded. Over 20 million Americans supported with his cause and participated the first time. Eventually the day became celebrated worldwide and Nelson was rightfully awarded for his idea. Earth Day is still very big, even though Nelson is now deceased. Unfortunately, it seems some Americans have started to doubt its importance and I hope we are able to make sure the new generations understand the significance of that day.

  43. I think that Earth Day is a very important day due to the fact that it holds a lot of events around the county that are geared towards cleaning up around their hometowns. Although I am not one to participate in any of these activities I think that there should be more people out helping out and cleaning because it would make the job a lot easier than it is already. Also I think that the day itself is important to people because it remind them about the world and how lucky we are to have what we have because not everyone has the same stuff we have and some people don’t even have anything.

  44. The first Earth Day occurred almost 50 years ago because of an environmental disaster in Santa Barbara California. Since then it has been an annual occurrence to help promote saving the environment. I do think Earth Day is a great idea, but ultimately it is just a small step in the right direction towards saving our planet. If humans continue to ruin the environment on the other 364 days of the year we’re in trouble. People need to start thinking more long term because while Earth Day is a great way to raise awareness, it is not a solution, but rather a starting point.

  45. This Earth Day, I protested at the March for Science in downtown Chicago. The March for Science occurred on April 22nd, 2017, in over 600 cities worldwide. To support the cause, my two sisters and I took the train to Ogilvie and walked down to Grant Park, where the march began. The March for Science was the brainchild of activists on a Reddit forum, who were inspired by the Women’s March on Washington. Their Facebook group went from 200 to 300,000 members in one week. From there, the message spread around the internet. Environmentalist groups around the world began planning marches in their cities, including here in Chicago. The March is specifically protesting the Trump administration's views on climate change and complete dismissal of scientific fact. Trump’s anti-environment agenda was highlighted when he placed a gag order on the Environmental Protection Agency, banning them from speaking to the media or making social media posts, as well as later cutting their funding. The sea of people walking down Columbus Drive was insane. NBC reported that upwards of 40,000 people were there. Although the amount of protection and conservation the United States’ environment gets has dropped, and the people who spout lies are heard more often (and louder) than scientists, knowing that hundreds of thousands of people are willing to fight that gave me slightly more faith in our future scientific community.

  46. Earth day (although being a major subject for some of those around me) has never truly affected me and how I have thought about conserving the earth. Don't get me wrong, I see the point of earth day, but it just is a normal day for me. I conserve energy by turning off the lights of rooms I am not in, turning off electronics that I do not use, and I do not littler. That's all I do. Every year, every day. I almost feel as if Earth day is an excuse for people to feel as if they are contributing towards a green world then become consumed by their daily habits the next day. But that's a whole new subject I am not willing to get in to right now.

  47. Earth day is the annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events in more than 193 countries are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. With Earth Day being 2 days after my birthday I love to celebrate it! In fact this past Saturday we started fostering again, we now have 8 kittens :) and the mom (All with Earth type names). By fostering kittens I feel that I am doing something for the greater good of animals on earth. I think Earth day is a great way to realize what we can do to help improve our earth. Also it is a day to come together and appreciate our wonderful home.

  48. A lot of times I feel like I just let Earth Day come and go as a normal day without really stopping to think of the significance of the day. Reading up on some of the history of earth day I learned some very interesting things I never knew about earth day. Earth day came about back in 1970 because one man saw event and felt like he needed to make a change. The senator of Wisconsin Gaylord Nelson experienced and oil spill that really sparked the idea from earth day. When I looked him up on google the first thing that came up was that he was "the founder of earth day, which launched a new wave of environmental activism. I would say as a whole my family is pretty good about watching what we do and being kind to the earth. We compost all year round, something that is really nice because it returns decomposed items back into the earth. I've done things for church as well where we' be gone around picking up trash or raking the leaves at people's homes. With the history of earth day in mind though next time it comes around maybe I won't just sit around and think of it as a normal day.

  49. My opinion on the state of our planet is that I believe that it is being poisoned, the very thing that gives us water, food and most importantly life is being poisoned by each and every one of us. In today's world it is becoming more and more difficult to be and eco friendly citizen because of where science is taking us to better entertainment and must have objects which many times produce harmful waste or the object itself is made in a factory that produces a lot of pollution. This is why earth day is very dear holiday to me because it brings everyone together with one goal and that goal is to preserve our planet. Overall earth day is important because it reminds us to take care of the planet that gives us life and may be the only planet in the solar system that can support us with air water and food.

  50. Probably one of the best days of my year began at 7:00am when my alarm went off I automatically got out of bed, took a shower, woke up my sisters, and prepared to pack for the march. For said science march I got on my “March for Science”T-shirt prepped my signs, my map, my water bottle, the train tickets, and perhaps most importantly my phone and charger.
By that time it was only 8:10 and neither of my sisters were even close to being ready as they were coming more because they wanted to go into the city less than they wanted to participate in the march, but we eventually got to the train station went on the 9:00 train and got into the city, we took an Uber to the pre-march rally where we caught the last speech, that was the Brain Scoop’s Emily Graslie, a favorite youtuber of mine, then after her closing we started walking.
As we started, I immediately noticed the amazing signs people made.
We kept walking down the street towards the Field Museum. Seeing so many people, including myself, dedicating a day to standing up for what they believe in, made me once again very proud of the of 40,000+ people I was marching with, the lovers of the truth, the scientists of the Chicago area. As we got even closer to the museum campus I saw, probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen at a march, huge dinosaur skeleton puppets.
It’s honestly just awesome. Sometimes we have to remember that we can’t just decrease the bad things in the world, we also have to increase the good things.
As we finally reached the Field, there was a massive science expo on the grounds, with booths upon booths and at least double the people.
We spent hours there...or at least until 3 when we got back on the train and went home.

  51. Nature surrounds us everyday and we almost never take the time to sit back and appreciate it for what it does. The earth provides us with all the food, water, and activities we could ever need, and we destroy it in return. This is why Gaylord Nelson, former Wisconsin senator, created earth day. Celebrated every April 22nd, Earth day provides an opportunity for the world to come together and celebrate the world they live on and learn more about it. The celebration of earth day is important within our society as people start becoming much more independent in our fast paced society and don't think they have enough time to dedicate to learning the issues that the earth is currently dealing with. Earth day puts all of these issues at the forefront for a day and help people to see what's been happening and make them much more aware.

  52. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. I think Earth Day is a great idea. I think it’s great that we are trying to raise awareness for the planet we live on. But this should not be the only time want to help the planet one day a year. Earth should almost be everyday we should worry and try and help and play a role in keeping the Earth clean everyday not just one day a year. Earth Day has done a great job raising awareness and we need to continue that through the year.

  53. Obviously, we would not have a place to live without the earth. That is why everyone needs to contribute to take care of it. Many people don't care or realize what is going wrong on our planet. We should be doing small things daily like recycling, picking up trash, or even sweeping outside like in the picture from the first Earth Day. Gaylord Nelson found inspiration to start Earth Day after seeing a 3-million gallon oil tanker spill off the coast of Santa Barbara in 1969. “Ultimately, the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, attracted some 20 million people—1 out of 10 of all Americans—to demonstrations, rallies, lectures and marches across the country,” says Baltimore. This is a very important date because it started the movement that now has over one billion people doing work to help save our planet on earth day. But, earth day should only be the start of our eco friendly activities. Also, I really want to see “Born In China”! It looks really good.
