To study or watch Netflix...that is the question

As I sit here on Saturday writing your blog post for this week, I am looking forward to watching a couple of episodes of Scandal tonight after my kids go to bed.  Is two episodes at a time considered binge watching?

I did a little research and realized that my two episodes (okay maybe sometimes three) at a time is not truly considered binge watching.  However, I do think that some of my students binge watch Netflix, Hulu or whatever other outlet has their show.  When I was little my mom was super strict about watching TV...

  • don't sit too close to the  TV...you might get cancer
  • don't listen to the TV too loud...it will cause hearing loss
  • don't watch TV for too long...it will kill brain cells

While I know that she was making most of her rules up, I am curious about the health effects of TV watching.  Especially binge watching.  Is binge watching good for you?  Does it change your brain?  Does it really lead to insomnia?  Does it cause weight gain?

Read one of the articles above and write a scholarly response about binge watching.  Is binge watching any different than watching hours and hours of YouTube (my son is so guilty of this)?   Is it really bad for you?  What do you think?  Write a 4 to 5 sentence summary and then conclude with your opinion of binge watching.  Perhaps you can include a recommendation of your top shows to binge watch.  Also please respond to one of your peers.

Maybe you don't binge watch or lose time watching YouTube....hopefully this weekend you are all studying so much for your photosynthesis and respiration test that you don't have time for binge watching.

  1. I read “ Is Binge-Watching Bad for Your Health?” by Science Opinion. It stated that more than 50% of americans watch 2 hours and 49 minutes a day. Because of binge watching, they said it leads to mental health problems like depression and anxiety. But some people think that watching t.v. is a way to relieve stress and worries. But after hours of watching t.v., it does harm to your brain. I think binge watching is relaxing, especially after a long day of school, but i believe that is does hurt your mental state and alters with your brain. It can be easy to watch The Office, or Friends (which i recommend you watch), but after binge watching i can see how it can lead to stress and mental problems. With binge watching becoming more popular, if you were to binge, this article stated it is beneficial to take at least a 5 minute break in between episodes to rest your brain and take your eyes of the bright screen.

    2. I agree with you, Lindsey. Binge watching shows can be dangerous, and can cause you to spend a whole day just sitting on your couch, not doing anything productive. You should take breaks in between shows, whether it be to eat or take a walk outside.

    3. I agree that binge watching can lead to depression and anxiety because you get so attached that you become depressed when you are finished with the show and you aren't getting enough sleep/giving your brain a rest

  2. I read the article “Netflix and Chew: How Binge Watching Affects Our Eating Habits”. The article mention studies between watching tv, particularly binge watching, and eating, particularly binge eating. There is convincing evidence between watching tv and weight gain, especially between specific genres. Action content promotes 98% more eating compared to talk shows being watched, while sad content promoted 55% more eating compared to those who watched happier content. These shows may cause a distraction to how much you are eating, and before you know it you are eating massive amounts of food compared to usual. This increase in eating easily causes weight gain to the viewer. The article also mentions how there is a possible correlation between binge viewing and higher rates of depression and type 2 diabetes.
My opinion on binge watching is that it can be unhealthy especially if you combine it with food. I don’t watch tv as much as most people because majority of my time is spent on my computer, and even at that I don’t eat while on my computer. So as long as you aren’t getting a headache or eating too much food I suppose you are fine.

Do you think hours in front of the computer screen is similar to watching hours on end of shows?

    2. I would say it is very similar as you are looking into a screen for extended periods of time, and both can cause strained eyes, but the difference in my opinion is a computer is much more hands on than a television, you are actually interacting in some way or another.

  3. Binge watching netflix or any other video streaming site isn’t really any different than watching hours of youtube or television. According to Huffington Post “Great tv shows, with complicated narratives and emotionally complex characters, are both cognitively and emotionally taxing” meaning that binge watching will make you tired and that one more show could keep you from wanting to do other things. Although cliff hangers can make us feel good and can give us a “heightened state of arousal and excitement” this doesn’t mean that sitting in front of your laptop screen is a good thing to do 12 hours a day. The bright screen at night can slow melatonin production leading to sleep loss or potentially problems such as insomnia, it can also lead to the habit of watching tv before bed (I admit to this). If you are feeling angry or stressed, you shouldn’t sit down with a gallon of ice cream to zone into a season of breaking bad, instead you should handle emotions in a healthy way. Netflix can easily keep you from doing other important tasks, such as homework, studying, or even eating right and getting the necessary amount of sleep. To be honest, I do binge watch on weekends sometimes, but only after getting other work done. I feel as if it can be a reward if you don’t overdo it. If you struggle with getting your work done, try only allowing yourself to watch a show after you finish your homework. This sounds hard but if you really try then finishing that season will be even more relaxing when you know you don’t have any work to finish. A few shows I’ve seen on netflix are Dexter, OITNB, Stranger Things, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead :)

  4. I read the New York times article. It talked about how binge watching has become more and more popular and has possibly taken a toll on the human race. We look for a new show on Netflix or Hulu and once we find it, we start watching it then get attached and since all episodes are out there, you just keep watching and watching: binge-watching. People have been starting to talk about the after effects. Watchers become almost depressed that their show is over and they have to wait for a new season, if there even is one. Another negative effect is that people keep watching and don’t even realize that it’s 3am and need to get to sleep. Binge-watching is creating bad sleeping patterns and even possibly insomnia. I personally don’t really binge watch and when I do, it’s a few episodes in the middle of the day. Yes, usually it keeps me from my homework, but I try to contain myself. I think binge watching is okay as long as you know when to stop yourself and not constantly complain about when the new season is coming out. Some good shows to binge watch or watch in general is timeless, beyond, shadowhunters, speechless, and Dr. Ken.

  5. I just read the article "What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge Watch". I find it very funny that this is the topic of the blog, because this is very common with teenagers and others in this day in age. You know how you always get left on cliffhangers? well this article tells us how the writers of each show are purposely doing this so that we are excited and can't wait to watch the next episode. Sitting down and clicking yes to continue on to the next episode is not the best decision. while watching intense Tv shows or youtube videos it requires our brain to stay well in tuned and always paying close attention. "Our brain is hardwired to monitor changes in our environment as a survival mechanism; so it’s hard for us to tear our eyes away." "Lounging slows circulation and metabolism, making you feel sluggish. At the same time, great TV shows, with complicated narratives and emotionally complex characters, are both cognitively and emotionally taxing." I don't believe that binge watching is the best thing for our brains. We connect with the things we are watching which may interfere with our real world and our take on life. If I watch a sad show it will most likely make me sad. If I watch a show and there is a lot of swearing it might cause me to swear more. So we need to pick our shows carefully and make sure we keep track how much we are watching in one sit down.

  6. Binge Watching

I read the article “What your brain looks like after as netflix binge” on Huffington post. There are many reasons they say how binge watching can negatively affect you. Sitting and doing nothing for a few hours doesn’t actually refresh you, it slows your metabolism and circulation, making you feel sluggish. I know the longer I sit and watch youtube, the harder it gets to tear myself away to do something productive. Watching TV can affect our afterword mood too. Watching a action packed show can make your life feel more exciting, while after watching a sitcom it can make you feel lonely. I think TV or youtube is fine in short spans(less than an hour) because anytime after that we become too reliant on it. Insomnia and changing the way we view our life is an increased risk with extensive binge watching. Overall, I think it is best to use TV or you tube as a reward, not something to drown out something bad.

    1. I read that article too, and I found it interesting that that our mood can stay the same, or get worse after we watch TV. I never fully realized that by watching TV or YouTube, I was just trying to distract myself from things going on in my life.

  7. I read the post, "What your Brain looks Like After A Netflix Binge" by the Huffington Post. It turns out that 61% of people say that they binge watch TV regularly, watching over 4 episodes in one sitting. Netflix enforces this with by providing episodes in mass amounts. The writers intentionally make their episodes with cliffhangers because our brains are wired to be glued to things like these. Watching for hours can slow circulation and metabolism, while also being cognatively and emotionally taxing. After watching, you have an extreme feeling of excitement that can carry over to real life, making you have more intense experiences. However, watching a lot of TV can to a 4 percent increase in the risk of developing insomnia. I believe that occasionally it is alright to binge watch a show, but binge watching everyday would be an unhealthy habit.

  8. I don't really think there is a big difference between binge watching Netflix or watching countless hour of YouTube videos. But from reading those articles and from prior knowledge, watching to much of Netflix, YouTube, or regular television is not good for you. TVs, smart phones, and computers give of EMFs (Electro Magnetic Fields). These EMFs can give us diseases like cancer. But I just want to watch more!

  9. After reading Is Binge-Watching Bad For Your Mental Help? by Monita Karmakar and Jessica Sloan Kruger, I learned several new things on how binge-watching can have a negative effect on us. Though there have been a limited number of studies conducted binge-watching can lead to obesity and diabetes. Furthermore, a survey’s results showed an average American spends 50% of their leisurely time watching television, however, the way we go about watching our favorite television shows has changed and now Netflix is referring to it as the “new normal”. In addition, a survey conducted by Netflix showed that 73% of recipients claim binge-watching is socially acceptable. Personally, I’m guilty of binge-watching frequently, for a few reasons there's no commercials, I have immediate access to all my favorite shows on the go on my phone, laptop, and iPad and I can watch an entire season without waiting a week for the next episode to air. Though, recently I have made an effort to spend less time on my phone watching YouTube and Netflix and instead grabbing a book to read.

  10. I read the huffington post article which talked about the reasons why humans are attracted to binge watching and how doing so can affect your brain or make you feel. It also explained the best ways to watch tv and other alternatives. The article stated that the reason you feel bad after watching a show (or multiple) is because that is the way you felt before. Say you are avoiding your friends by watching tv and you feel bad about it, but after watching for a while you forget, after the episode is over you will feel worse. Also, it makes you feel very unproductive which is why you feel sluggish after watching a few episodes. I love a good episode of desperate housewives but binge watching is definitely not good for you.

The article gives tips on how to break binge watching. As a scientist, I believe that binge watching causes short term side affects, like feeling sluggish, and is not that important if an issue. It may slow down metabolism while you are sitting down watching the show, but once you get back up, you'll be fine. I personally also do not see an issue with binge watching. It may get in the way of your activities and studies but that is completely up to whether you let it or not.

  12. This article was about how most people, 75% to be exact, are guilty of binge-watching TV shows and it isn't healthy. Our bodies can't stop watching the shows because the way the writers' and directors' create the content makes it so we don't want to stop watching. A way to stop binge-watching shows is to only watch 20 minutes of the next episode because that'll resolve your craving to watch the show but you won't get too far in the plot of the next episode. Also, sitting and watching a TV show for hours isn't good for you because it slows circulation and metabolism. And for the suggestion of shows you asked for Mrs. Mazzuca, you're in luck because I already have a list of shows I've watched (I'm guilty of binging):

  13. I read the article Is Binge-Watching Bad for your Mental Health and it was about how the amount of people watching TV has grown immensely over the past few years. It also talked about how binge watching could be linked to mental states such as anxiety, stress, and depression. The article brought up a good point that binge watching is becoming a lot easier with Netflix and Hulu that's available at people’s fingertips. I think binge watching is not that different than watching hours and hours of YouTube because when you are watching YouTube for hours you are still watching something continuously which is not much different than binge watching a show for hours. Binge watching could be really bad for you mentally and physically depending how long and how often you binge watch, if you binge watch every once in awhile then you're fine but if you do it every day then that’s a problem. 14. I read the article “What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge”. The article looks at the whys, the bad and the good associated with binge-watching of shows. Binge-watching, commonly defined as watching 2 or more episodes of a show in one sitting, is a relatively new phenomenon. It is fueled by the television/streaming industry as they fulfill the wants of viewers, writers and TV executives. With binge-watching comes bad and good. On the downside, binge-watching can drain us physically (poor circulation and lower metabolism) and emotionally (complexity and attachment to characters and story lines). Often addictive, binge-watching can act like alcohol and drugs, causing us to tune out our real life issues / problems. To find the good in binge-watching, one can look to the ‘feel good’ obtained when a show ends on a good note. That ‘feel good’ often spills over into our real world giving us a positive outlook and upbeat attitude. Just like everything in life, there’s good and bad associated with binge-watching. For me, I find binge-watching a great use of my time. With my busy schedule, I find it easier to carve out a chunk of downtime and crank through several episodes of a show. Is it physically and emotionally draining? Sometimes. Depends on the show and if I’m motivated to be active (treadmill) or just lounge during a binge. “The Real O’Neal’s” does wonders for boosting my laughs and leaving me relieved of stress. “This Is Us” is definitely more emotionally draining for me, and with cliffhangers leaving me wanting more – turning a binge, into a marathon.

  15. I read the article "What Your Brain Looks Like After a Netflix Binge" by the Huffington Post. The article includes many different scientific views on binge watching by Robert F. Potter. I agree with Potter on the various affects, both social and scientific, binge watching can have on us. Potter's research tells us "Lounging slows circulation and metabolism, making you feel sluggish." (Though I have found that it often keeps me feeling awake and stimulated). The article gives examples and reasons of how it can affect us emotionally, such as a cliffhanger leaving us excited and anxious for the next episode can leave us feeling good after our show. My personal opinion on binge watching is not to go too far. Take a break every now and then to not only increase the length of your show, but it would also be healthier to give yourself a break.

  16. The article I read is What Your Brain Looks Like After a Netflix Binge. Binging is defined as watching 2-6 episodes of a show in one sitting. Cliffhangers are a pretty big factor to why we would want to binge watch. Hours in front of the TV can slow us down and make us feel sluggish. If the end of the show is a cliffhanger, people tend to feel happier because they become excited. But if the end of the show just ends, we don’t feel as happy and they make us feel bad afterwards. Research shows that when you get into the world of a TV show for a long time, it influences how you see the real world. I personally think binge watching isn’t such a big deal. Sometimes it's really nice to just sit and relax for a few episodes of your favorite show. I think that binge watching is more of the “sit in front of TV for half of the day”, and it should be okay to watch 2-3 episodes. Something I don’t get is, watching one, two hour movie is perfectly fine, but watching three, 40 minute episodes is not okay, and it’s considered binge watching?

  17. I read the article called ‘What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge.’ The article stated the different pros and cons to binge watching TV shows. I’m personally not into TV that much but I do love Youtube and I don’t think the two are much different. You’re still staring at a screen while watching endless videos/episodes. I got to agree it’s taxing on the mind because there is usually so much to account for in a show, its characters, setting, plot, etc. The article I had read even stated that “lounging slows circulation & metabolism, making you feel sluggish.” The mental mind becomes slow and your eyes may hurt after staring at a screen for a time. Overall I feel that binge watching is bad for you, and the cons outweigh the pros. Even though you may enjoy the show, feeling tired and sluggish afterwards isn’t exactly right.
Even though I don’t watch TV often these are some of my favorite shows; Doctor Who, Stranger Things, Forensic Files, See no Evil, Fear thy Neighbor, and Crime a to Remember.

  18. After reading the article The Post-Binge-Watching Blues: A Malady of Our Times from The New York Times I learned that people can feel a sense of sadness after successfully binge watching a show and finishing it. The sadness only causes people to find a new show and the cycle repeats itself again. It also went into detail about how Netflix has begun dropping entire seasons of shows all at once rather than one episode each week. Hulu believes that doing it this way take away from the social aspect that has come along with TV and has some original shows that they release weekly episodes of. As a result of entire seasons coming out all at once people tend to binge watch and then are left to wait for new episode for months, allowing people to bond over that misery and practice the virtue of patience. As I am certainly guilty of binge watching, currently Bones, I can see the negative effects it can have on a person, but it certainly is entertaining.

  19. Binge watching can make you cognitively and emotionally taxed. Lounging can also slow down your circulation and metabolism. Binge watching can be good in some ways too. When there’s a cliffhanger, it makes you excited and you can’t wait to watch the next episode. This carries over to your real life and it makes the experience more exciting. Binge watching can make you feel bad because if the episode doesn’t have a cliffhanger you would have missed your friends and the good times you could have had for no reason. I really like watching Netflix, and sometimes I binge watch too. But sometimes you can go way overboard. Some of my favorite Netflix shows are Vampire Diaries, The Originals, One Tree Hill, SuperGirl, The Flash and Arrow.

The article I read was the Huffington Post’s, and it mentioned that watching shows for a while may influence how you perceive the world. Their example being that watching Breaking Bad would most likely cause you to see the world “as an unpredictably bleak, nihilistic place.” (Pikul). 21. I read the article on Huffington Post titled, “What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge” and it talked about what happens to your brain after binging shows. They began by testing things out for themselves and binged two seasons of a show in one weekend. They did this because Robert F. Potter suggests that the type of show determines how you feel after you finish watching. He said that watching a sitcom may cause us to feel more down and like we just wasted five hours. Where if you were to watch a drama ending with cliffhangers and suspense, you will leave feeling as if you have accomplished something. They suggest to get that accomplished feeling, you should watch dramas or pause your sitcom 20 minutes in to leave some suspense. Binge watching I’m sure isn’t good to do all the time, and I can admit to my fair share of binging in the past but not so much anymore. We live in 2017, a world where this is considered a “norm” and if that’s how people find their happiness, who am I to stop it? As I’ve mentioned before I don’t binge too much anymore, but no matter what if you put an episode of “Friends” in front of me, I could finish the whole season in one day!

  22. I read the article "What Your Brain Looks Like After a Netflix Binge". The article explains about how shows use cliff hangers to keep you from turning the TV off. They end the show at the most intense point making you want to know what will happen next in the story. The article also talks about why emotions evoked from TV transfer into real life. Many times, people develop relationships with the characters. When the show ends, people are often left sad. The article even explains how people who watch television are at a foir percent increased risk of developing insomnia. Many people even watch to escape there stress, on a day to day basis. In my personal opinion, I don't think binge watching is really that bad for you. As long as you don't watch more than three episode of a show, its not really that big of a deal. For me, its a good way to relieve stress. There are still some health risks, but its not bad enough where I think that people should not do it. Sometimes television is the only thing I can do to relax, and I don't know what I would do if television was not an option.

  23. The article I read, “The Post-Binge-Watching Blues: A Malady of Our Times”, talked all about the feeling of separation and wanting more of the show after you’ve finished it. It also gave statistics of how certain shows hook people into watching for hours and hours, even after a few episodes. The article said that the Netflix company is aware of their binge watchers and has spoken little about it, but no change is occurring. In fact, they release entire seasons all at once which can promote binge watching. I think that the habit of binge watching shows is unhealthy for both your body and for your mind. It harms your body by corrupting sleep habits and eliminating exercise, and you can get in a greedy mindset of always wanting more episodes which can promote awful habits in life. I do not have Netflix, so I cannot recommend any shows.

  24. binge watching
    noun
the practice of watching multiple episodes of a television program in rapid succession, typically by means of DVDs or digital streaming. ( google definition)
Binge watching and watching hours of YouTube videos are the same thing the difference is what platform you are on. (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc.) I don't think binge watching is good for your health but it is pretty fun. Personally I don’t have a lot of time to binge watch a whole season at a time. However I have gotten pretty far in the season. I don't think binge watching the the worst thing you can do. Unless every hour of every day is spent binge watching and if it messes with other things you have to do. Do I think binge watching is that bad? No I don't I think there is a limit however. Is binge watching bad for you? Probably. Being depressed because you don't have anymore episodes for your favorite show because you binge watched it. Is a problem. Personally I haven't run into this because I am behind on some shows and they have a lot of seasons. However i think you can run into being sad about your season ending even if you didn't binge watch it. For Example- When American Horror Story: Roanoke ended I was pretty sad for two reasons 1. The ending was not that great and 2. Now i have to wait till September/October for a new season. If they even make another season. I can see how binge watching affects your mental health but I also think lots of things do and it can be for similar or different reasons. Some shows I like ( all are on Netflix and some have current seasons actually on T.V or do air on T.V.) Shameless
Bates Motel (more on the creepy side still a good show)
Any Season of American Horror Story (kinda creepy as well)

    2. I like how you mention the whole fact about how finishing a show can cause depression, but honestly I find it fun to go back and watch the seasons a year later and just notice the small details I've missed. And I wanted to recommend a movie for you that I'll think you'll like since you're into creepy shows. It's called Sweeney Todd and it's a musical(on Netflix) and I think you'll like it and maybe think "oh this isn't that creepy". But the filming in it is really cool and I think you'll enjoy it.

  25. The article I read is called “What Your Brain Looks Like After a Netflix Binge”. Binge watching Netflix is something that I'm guilty of, but I did not know that doing this could have some negative effects on the brain. In the article, it talked about the reasons we binge watch, how it makes us feel after binge watching, and how to break this bad habit. The reason we binge watch is because of the convenience of having another episode right after the one you just watched. It makes us feel excited when there is a cliffhanger mystery that could be solved in a matter of minutes by watching the next episode right after the last one ends. Binge watching can also make us feel bad because we watch it to try and get away from other issues, but it doesn't work and makes you even more sad about your situation. The best way to break this binge watching habit it too watch an episode at a time, and if there is a cliffhanger, just watch the first 20 minutes of the episode so it will resolve its mystery. Although binge watching can be relaxing, we all need to decrease the amount of time watching it and spend more time hanging out with family and friends. (Some of my favorite shows that I have binge watched are One Tree Hill, Friends and Grey's Anatomy)

This article talked about the effect of Binge watching and how it makes you feel after finishing the episodes the most interesting thing for me was that the episodes purposefully end with cliffhangers so that you watch the next episode. I learned also that what you watch can also reflect on how you act in the real world. The most interesting thing that I learned is the best way to stop watching an episode is 20 minutes into the next one to resolve the cliffhanger but also not go too far into the next episode. My opinions on watching to much TV is that it's not good I don’t know about other people but for me if I watch TV for too long feel tired so for me I would rather go outside or do something productive.

  27. I read the article,"What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge". It explains how what you watch can affect the way you feel after binge watching a show, such as a show like Breaking Bad can negatively change your views on the world. They also explained how it can increase your problems and insomnia by 4 percent. In my opinion binge watching a show can negatively affect you depending on what you watch. I binge watched the show The Office and it still took me months to finish, once I finished I was very upset but while I watched I had a fantastic time. Such a positive and funny show like The Office changed my outlook in a positive way. I think binge watching on netflix is ultimately the same way, the result of your mood is dependent on what you spend your time watching.

  28. I read the article Netflix and Chew and I learned that binge watching Netflix can seriously effect your physical health. Binge watching tv can lead to obiesity because of unhealthy snacks and beverages. Also you have much more exposure to unhealthy foods and beverages marketing. Also binge watching has a connection to higher rates of depression and type 2 diabetes, which I know from bio class has to do with you eating too unhealthy. Research shows a strong connection between the hours of tv you watch and the amount of food you consume. The more you watch tv the more mindless eating you do. My opinion on binge watching is it is very in healthy and when I have done it I feel very unaccomplished because I have done nothing but sit around for all those hours when I could have been doing something productive. If I were to recoomend binge watching shows I would recommend Prison Break, Breaking Bad, The 100, Friday Night Lights, and That 70's Show.

For example it says that after binge watching you might be feeling depressed or stressed out . It also states that binge watching could affect you physically too! Studies showed that the more you binge watch, the more you are prone to get diabetes or become obese. As a scientist I think that binge watching is not good for your health, mentally or physically. 30. For this weeks blog post I read the article What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge. The article states that binge watching can make you feel sluggish. Also TV shows, with complicated narratives and emotionally complex characters, are both cognitively and emotionally taxing. Potter also states, “Your emotional state at the end of a show is also affected by how you felt when you queued it up. People who tried to forget about their anxieties by watching television had a 4 percent increased risk of developing insomnia (inability to sleep), found one recent study. If you use something (alcohol, drugs, TV) to help you block out problems, you almost always feel worse later.” This can create a big problems for later or life and your sleeping habits. Binge watching isn’t all bad it does have some positives. For example cliffhangers can leave us in a heightened state of arousal and excitement. I think binge watching is okay, but should not be done repeatedly (not everyday). I recommend binge watching the Crown on Netflix or Stranger Things.

  31. I read the article, "What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge"
I learned that there are many ways that the producer of the tv show and the author of the tv show keep you from putting down. I think binge watching YouTube is similar to binge watching a tv show or Netflix because you are basically watching a tv show but one that isn't made by a company just a person. There are also some YouTube videos that are educational and they can actually teach you something new or get a better understanding of something that you already new. I would have to say that binge watching is bad for you, although we all don't want that to be true it is. There is no physical activity when you are watching a tv show and your not always eating food that is healthy for you. I do binge watch YouTube and Netflix, I am always bored because I dont have anything fun to do and I don't have baseball practice every night so I end up watching for a long time.

  32. I read the article “What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge”. Binge watching is defined as watching 2-6 episodes of a show in one sitting. I found it most interesting is how people who do binge watch become so emotionally invested in a show that it can affect their moods afterwards. For example if something good happens at the end of a show, you will feel as if you were part of it in the real world. Also if you stop watching the article says you then miss your “friends” that you spent all day with. Another problem is binge watching hurts your circulation and metabolism, which negatively affects your health. Personally I think binge watching is bad for your health. That said I don’t think that any of us are about to stop binge watching anytime soon. This would mean that people who do binge watch would have to do something to counteract the binge watching such as going out with friends, exercising etc.

  33. I read “The Post-Binge-Watching Blues: A Malady of Our Times.” The article focused on the negative mental effects that binge watching may leave you with. It brought up something called post-binge malaise. The article showed many tweets mentioning depression and states that binge-watching is the cause of this. In my opinion, binge-watching is not bad as long you have already dealt with the more important things in your life. I know that when I binge-watch it is because I’ve had an eventful day and need to have time to myself. I do admit that binge-watching can sometimes leave me feeling upset, but knowing others who also watch the show helps.
And if you're looking for a good show I'd recommend Sherlock. The seasons are short and only composed of three episodes. Each episode is like a mini movie though, since each episode is an hour and a half. This format makes it really easy to binge-watch and the show is very different from what you may be used to.

  35. I read the article "What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge" which taught me that though there can be many benefits to binge watching like a prolonged feeling of happiness, there are also some major downsides. One that I noticed was that for people who suffer from daily anxieties had an increased risk of insomnia. Plus, sometimes seasons or shows can end with a cliffhanger or worse they end in a way that isn't satisfying. And it can cause us to become lethargic and sloth-like because of slow circulation and metabolism. If two to six episodes is considered binge watching then call me a teleholic or showaholic. I understand why bingeing can be bad for your health, but the reward of learning and finishing a show is so satisfying. It gives me another platform to learn with that doesn't hurt anyone and will help me in the future. Some shows I recommend are below, with short summaries. (in order of most liked)
~Supernatural- Two brothers hunt Supernatural beings (if you like X-Files)
~X-Files- Two FBI agents solve unexplainable events and people that show up in their cases
    ~Smallville- Young Superman
~Lucifer- Lucifer is sick of the underworld so he takes a leave of absence to Earth
~Stitchers- A girl is able to have her mind be put into the recently departed to find out how they die in order to solve murder cases
    ~Sherlock- Freelance "detective" solves cases
~Doctor Who- An alien Time Traveller saves the Earth
~Merlin- The Legend of Young Merlin and Arthur

  36. I read the article "What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge". This article explained how binge-watching can affect the way you feel physically and emotionally. It explained how it raises your chances of having insomnia by 4% and cliffhangers can leave you excited, while sitcoms can leave you feeling down afterwards. I personally think binge-watching isn't necessarily the best thing for people to do but it isn't really a huge issue as along as you're not doing it every single day without prioritizing. Binge-watching would become problematic if you were to lose sleep because of it, doing it instead of homework/chores/etc., and not socializing. But that applies to anything, really.

  37. For this post, I read “What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge” from the Huffington Post. According to the article, 61% of participants in an online survey said that they regularly binge-watch TV. When watching shows, our brain pays close attention like plots, characters and dialogue, as well as autonomic attention to things like scene changes. Although it can be relaxing, laying around lowers your circulation and metabolism. People who binge-watch also have a higher chance of developing insomnia.

I think that binge-watching is different than hours of YouTube, because it’s a narrative. On YouTube, you can hope from one video to the next in minutes, where TV shows can be much longer. I think that watching YouTube is almost more harmful than binge-watching because you can consume so much more media. For just plain ol’ binge-watching, I don’t think there’s any harm in treating yourself to a good “one season in one night”, but it shouldn’t be all the time. Shows I recommend are Criminal Minds, Parks and Recreation, How to Get Away with Murder, Orange is the New Black, and The 100. (I also was TOTALLY binge-watching Parks and Rec before I wrote this blog post. Oops.)

  38. I read the article “What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge” from Huffington Post. This article describes several different positive and negative effects of binge-watching. Binge-watching shows is somewhat instinctual for because it catches and maintains our attention throughout with suspense created by using cliffhangers. This great desire to keep watching even though it might not be healthy is why most people binge-watch shows. The major positive effect of this habit is that it leaves people in a “heightened state of arousal and excitement”. There are also negative effects however, such as, leaving you feeling sad because the show is over and you miss the experience, and it can lead to an increased risk of insomnia for people who use it to get away from their problems, this is because it becomes an addiction for them so they would rather watch the show than try to sleep and face thinking about the problems they face. In my opinion, binge-watching, while it can cause some issues, is mostly fine because people who understand their limits and how long is too long will be fine. For me I can binge watch maybe 4-5 episodes in a day and still feel fine after. It really depends on the person and only becomes an issue if people take it too far. I don’t really binge watch Netflix a lot, but I did watch all of Stranger Things in one sitting, I definitely recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it yet watch it.

  39. Today I read the article, ¨Netflix And Chew: How Binge Watching Affects Our Eating Habits¨, which explains how binge watching Netflix negatively affects your eating habits. Different T.V. shows or movies can lead to different emotions and overeating. For example, in the article, it said that ¨anything that involves a stress reaction enhances people's levels of cortisol — and we know that leads to overeating." And if you are watching sad content, such as Solaris, you are going to eat more than a person who watches an upbeat show. However, despite this, there are many solutions to this. For instance, you can not watch anything while you eat, meaning you have to put down the phone, turn off the T.V. and close the computer. On the other hand, if you want to eat while watching, then just prepare and put healthy snacks in front of you so you aren't tempted. Personally, I don't binge watch much, but I am sometimes guilty of unhealthy eating while just watching T.V. I also recommend Daredevil and the Office for good T.V. shows. Maybe even Luke Cage.

  40. I think that if you binge watch moderately (like 1 or 2 times a month), then it would that be that unhealthy. In fact I think it would actually probably be healthy because then you get to take a break, relax, and watch your favorite TV show. The human brain needs rest every now and then and after 2-4 weeks of work, you start to get really tired out, no matter how much you sleep. You need that break every month. But even though that it is healthy to take a break, you shouldn't do it all the time. These binge watches tend to lead to snacking through out the day and although that isn't bad in itself, if you do it over and over and over in a short period of time, it starts to become an unhealthy habit that leads to weight gain. Also you need to control how long and how late you binge watch. If you decide to binge watch in the middle of the week until 3-4 am, then you won't get much sleep. But if you binge watch till midnight on a Saturday and then wake up around 10 in the morning, then that would be considered a good amount of sleep. All in all, binge watch can be unhealthy but it doesn't always have to be.

  41. I read “The Post-Binge-Watching Blues: A Malady of Our Times.”. The article talked about the negative effects on the brain. It talked about how we are depressed after binge watching a show because we are left on a cliffhanger. Each episode is about 40 min.

  42. I read the Huffington Post article, and it explained how we as people get so intrigued that we want to watch more, and netflix can do tricky things like immediately playing the next episode to stimulate that. I think that watching youtube is a lot like watching netflix because you are still sitting down and looking at a screen. There is not activity involved in both which can make you feel sluggish too. A TV show that I recommend is Breaking Bad. It os very good and even some science in it too!

  43. I read the article that talked about how binge watching affects your mental health. It was in the article that many people feel very emotionally drained after a long session of binge watching. Some people said they felt sad, anxious, depressed and even a very empty feeling. A survey was done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics saying that on average Americans spend about 2 hours and 49 minutes watching tv each day. The big appeal it said about binge-watching is the fact that the person can watch completely uninterrupted tv. They are also able to finish an entire series at their own time without having to wait for new episodes to come out. There was another survey conducted by Texas A&M University that talked about the addictive side of binge-watching. They found out that those who binge watch lack the self regulation to stop, causing them to become very addicted. I find the whole binge-watching phenomen to be quite interesting. My parents get very serious about some shows with our Netflix membership we have. I'm not a huge binge-watcher myself but from time to time on the weekends I'll find a good show and stick with it. A show that I used to really enjoy that doesn't make any new episodes anymore is Castle. Sometime I'll watch old season on Netflix though. Another good one for me is Friday Night Lights.

It also said that sitting in front of a TV for too long will lower your metabolism causing you to feel sluggish. 46. The article I read was the Huffington Post's "What Your Brain Looks Like After Watching A Netflix Binge". The article said that when watching a show, some of the experiences that happen onscreen sometimes happen in real life, causing it to be more intense for you, as you probably just watched it on your screen. I think this relates to why people binge watch shows. Sometimes, the shows relate to our own lives, and we can have similar experiences to ones in our favorite shows. People probably feel as if they can relate to some of the characters, which sparks the interest. Also, binge watching any show (whether it be a talk show or One Tree Hill), can seriously take a toll on your health. First of all, I said that occasionally when you watch a show, you find a a character you can relate to. When the show ends, all the fictional characters that you've been watching and understanding are done for. The article said that can make a person depressed, just from one of their favorite shows (such as Friends or Lost). Second, sitting on the coach all day can make you seriously inactive. After five hours of sitting on your coach and possibly eating a snack, you can feel tired and moody after your session. I think a solution could be to take our binging slow, possibly go outside as a break, or binge watch with real-life friends, as a boost in social health.

After reading this article I learned a lot about what the affects of watching tv for long periods of time can do to you. I never knew that certain health issues can come from it because whenever I used to watch a tv show on Netflix for a long amount of time, I felt fine. I guess it really depends on what you are doing while watching like eating a lot of food. Also the article talked about how your brain like slows down after watching so much. I find this kind of scary because since your so lost in the show, you never really know what is actually going on in your brain. You don't feel it or anything but it is actually happening and that's what is kind of creepy to me. Overall this article taught me a lot about how Netflix binge watching can cause a lot of bad things for you and you should take it slow and not spend 10 hours watching a show.

  48. I read “Is Binge Watching Bad For Your Health?”. Binge watching multiple episodes of a tv show can definitely affect a person negatively. “Excessive TV watching has long been associated with health problems. Scientific studies have shown that prolonged television viewing increases the risk of obesity and related diseases such as diabetes. It’s also been linked to mental health problems like depression.” Most people can probably agree that allowing your child to watch a few episodes is fine, but once it starts to get into a few seasons, it could start to take over your life. It is important to balance out watching tv, studying, and doing other chores and hobbies. I think that as long as you can do that and you don’t let it take over your life then it’s fine. Some people will be affected differently than others because not everyone will start to become glued to the screen or become so sad when their show ends that it leads to health problems. Again, as long as you know your limits you should be okay. When I’m watching a show I am usually doing other things and have it playing in the background. That’s probably better than just sitting on the couch for hours and hours without moving. I think sitting on the computer is similar because you're watching a screen, but it can be different, and sometimes I think a computer can be more addicting than binge watching tv. You can do so many things and you really get addicted because you’re not really multi tasking like you can when you watch tv.

  49. I read the article "Is binge-watching bad for your mental health?". It explained how after watching long strings of episodes at a time, some people expressed that they felt depressed and had anxiety. So a study was made to understand how binge watching affects us from a public health perspective. They noticed how in a survey conducted by Netflix in 2013, the act of binge watching has become a more prevalent activity in american society and most find it acceptable to do. When the study of binge watching on public health was made, they noticed that people who were self identified binge watchers had a higher risk for stress, anxiety and depression, yet were unable to find the true relationship between binge watching and these symptoms, as the study only shows a correlation between binge watching and poor mental health. Personally I feel that binge watching is okay but should be done at moderation

  50. Binge watching is known to cause post-binge malaise. Post-binge maniasis is another way to say post binge watching blues. People would binge watch their favorite shows and after they were done they would be left without episodes to watch and a feeling of emptiness. Binge watching lets people see and find out what's going to happen in a season all at once, and then leaves them with nothing else to see or find out until netflix or hulu post another load of episodes a month later. It's like a withdrawal from drugs or an addiction you have; your left feeling like you have a part missing. The problem is that you aren't supposed to watch everything at once because this happens. You want to be able to get a steady intake of info from your show so that you don't get bored. Patience is key and necessary in life, but sometimes you just have to learn how to pace yourself. If i had to recommend any show to binge watch though, it would be How To Train Your Dragon: race to the edge.

One of the benefit the article talked about included cliffhangers keeping us in a heightened state of excitement. I had never really considered there could be any benefits of binge watching, so this surprised me. But the article also discussed some of the negatives, such as feeling sluggish or dealing with insomnia. 55. I read the Huffington Post article, "What Your Brain Looks Like After a Binge". The article stated that about 61 percent of people who watch Netflix binge watch their shows regularly. The article classified binge watching as watching 2-6 episodes in one sitting. Robert Potter, PhD, said that the reason we binge is because the episodes are right there, the writers leave us with cliffhanger, and the shows capture our attention, making it impossible for us to stop watching. Binge watching causes our metabolism and our circulation to slow, making us feel sluggish. Watching a show binge style, can cause a heightened state of excitement resulting in you having a positive outlook in your real life. Binge watching can also result in negative emotion state that cause a possible increase in insomnia. The article stated that the more you watch a show the more it impacts your view on life. I believe that although binge watching can impact your health it is not that bad. Watching certain shows can make a person feel better about themselves and their lives resulting in more positive emotional feelings. I personally have binge watched a multitude of shows including, but not limited to, Grey's Anatomy, Friends, How I Met Your Mother, Criminal Minds, Psych, Bones, New Girl, CSI:NY, Glee, Gilmore Girls, Hawaii Five-O, Baby Daddy, Melissa and Joey, Pretty Little Liars, Forensic Files, and NCIS.

  56. I read the huffington post article and the guardian article. I had always thought binge-watching was a bad thing for your physical health, but I had no idea the effect it had on mental and emotional health. I had always just figured watching TV would make you happier, since its job is to entertain you, the viewer, and the viewing gets to pick the entertainment. However, it does not effect me much either way, since the closest I come to binge watching is a half an hour of catching up on Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah on YouTube. However, reading this article has made me more aware of just watching TV in general, and I now know to limit my time on the couch.

  57. I read the article by the Huffington post and it talked about the effects of binge watching. It talked about how watching hours of TV can cause circulation and metabolism to slow. It also stated that using TV to help block out your problems can make you feel even worse afterwards. The study showed that people who used TV to forget about their anxieties had a 4 percent increased risk of having insomnia.

  58. I read the article What Your Brain Looks Like After A Netflix Binge the article talked about how 61% of people who watch Netflix binge watch their show regularly. Robert Potter, director of the Institute for Communication Research at Indiana University, said that the reason we binge watch shows is because of the cliffhangers that force us to keep watching if we want to figure out what is going to happen to our favorite characters. Binge watching can drain you of emotion and make you fell sluggish. But, binge watching can also add emotion into your life, like if your favorite character just had something really good happen you will probably be in a good mood. Though this can do the opposite, like if your favorite character dies you'll probably be really upset the rest of the day. So, I think that binge watching healthy unless it gets in the way of your school or sleep.

  59. I read the article “Is binge watching bad for your mental health” I really never watch Netflix, I know that sounds crazy but I like watching shows that are on tv and they are not available on Netflix. But I learned that watching tv for a long time is not good for your health. An average American spends about 2 hours and 49 minutes watching tv per day. 73% of people say that binge watching is acceptable with probably not knowing the effects of it. Watching tv for a long time has been associated with the increase risk of obesity and diabetes. It also can cause mental health issues such as depression and it also can become addictive. Watching tv is totally fine but I think people should learn to not watch so much at a time. I think just giving yourself a break from watching a tv show can help you reduce the risk that binge watching can have.

    1. I completely agree that binge watching all the time is detrimental to your health. But I think it is ok to do it every once in a while as you must remember to take everything in moderation.

  60. I read the article “Is Binge Watching Bad for Your Mental Health” and I think that it proves how bad binge watching can be for not only your mind but also your body. Those who excessively binge watch often are obese and suffer from diabetes, they also have higher levels of anxiety and depression. However I believe that we must take everything in moderation if you spend all your time watching tv or Youtube and not going out with friends then obviously you are going to become obese and feel isolated. In conclusion I think it is ok to binge watch tv or watch hours of Youtube(same thing) every once in awhile but if you constantly do it then it is only going to lead to bad things. P.S my favorite Netflix show is Agents of Shield.
