Choices Choices Choices

As you contemplate which science class you should take as sophomores, I thought it was a perfect week to give you choices on your blog post.

1.  Watch the Ted Lesson below:

In the video, there were many terms that we discussed in class on Thursday:  enzyme, active site and more.  In a scholarly paragraph, explain how enzymes work.  What is the enzyme?  What is the substrate?  How is aspirin different than ibuprofen?  In the penny lab, we learned about denaturation, co-enzymes and competitive inhibitors, which of these three things do you think that aspirin and ibuprofen work like?  Why would it be bad to permanently change your pain receptors?  What is congenital analgesia?  How do they treat it?  You do not need to comment on a peer's response.

OR

2.  Watch the two videos below about the history of Veterans Day:

and

In a scholarly paragraphy explain why Veterans Day is significant to you.  Are you related to a Veteran?  When did they serve?  What is the history of Veterans Day?  What do you do specifically to thank the Veterans that have served our country?  I know that the Ela Public Library by my house has a letter writing day on November 6th where the public can write letters to Veterans to thank them for serving our country.

Two very different choices for this week.  I hope you can find one that you like.

  1. Veterans Day is a holiday celebrated November 11th every year that plays a vital role in my family. On both sides of my family, I have my grandfather, who served in the Korean War, and my cousin, who was a member of the Army about 7 to 8 years ago. In fact, my cousin showed such exemplary skills that he was moved up to become an Army Ranger, which is only allowed for a select number of people. Both these men have served as role models for myself and others in my family. They defined what true leadership and effort is, so I have now become accustomed to their ways and acts. I know how much Veterans Day means to them, because I have heard of their stories before. People that disgrace the way that soldiers lead our country really gets under the skin of them, as they both know that what they say is false. No one truly knows what terror feels like unless you see with your own eyes. They even had to kill others in order to keep themselves alive, something that has left them traumatized after their time as soldiers. Every year, I make the attempt to thank these two men for shaping the type of person that I am, as I have tried to gain the qualities of leadership and being a role model for others to look up to. I either call or text them a brief message thanking them for their hard work. Veterans Day dates back for almost a century, starting off as celebrating the soldiers of World War I. This was done on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. However, it began in October, which is quite odd. After World War II, people started to complain that these men should be honored as well, so they made that law. Eventually, President Ford made a law that Veterans Day should honor all the men and women who served our country. All groups, whether it is the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines, should be given and honor or a day to celebrate their hard work. My family truly takes this day to heart, as do the family members that I know on a personal level. I can remember from previous years that my schools had a design made of stars that people wrote down the names of family members that served, but I am unsure if this happens here. Nonetheless, this day, knowing family members and how they treat this day, is very special. As much as I want to be as good as them someday, I know that I will never be as beneficial to the world as they were. They have made me realize how fortunate I am to be living the way I am today. They protected not only myself, but the United States and made our country the way it is. There is no words to describe the impact that Veterans Day has on our country, and should continue to be celebrated universally for years to come.

  2. Enzymes are special proteins that speed up chemical processes. Aspirin works by sticking to the active site and making the enzyme and the substrate unable to connect permanently . Ibuprofen works by resting on the active site but not changing the enzyme so it can be removed, but while it is on the active site the enzyme cannot connect to the substrate. This would probably relate more to trial 4 where the pennies were picked up with the gloves. Changing the pain receptors would affect how we react to pain. Congenital analgesia is a condition that makes it so you can’t feel pain, although there is no cure, the treatment revolves around prevention of injury.

  3. Enzymes are special proteins that speed up the chemical reactions in our body, while substrates are what the enzyme is working on or trying to change. Aspirin and Ibuprofen, though seem the same, are actually pretty different. Both block production of one class of the tuning chemicals, called prostaglandins. When cells are damaged, they release a chemical called arachidonic acid. Two enzymes called COX-1 and COX-2 convert this into Prostaglandin H2. However, Aspirin acts like a porcupine's spine, and enters the active site of COX-1 and 2, breaks off, leaving half of itself in there, preventing the arachidonic acid from fitting in there. This deactivates COX-1 and COX-2. On the other hand, Ibuprofen doesn’t break apart or change the enzyme like Aspirin. And while it’s in there, the enzyme can’t bind the arachidonic acid. I would say that Aspirin works like denaturation because it completely deactivates it, while Ibuprofen works like the competitive inhibitor because the enzyme can spit it out, but while it’s in, it blocks off the arachidonic acid. It would be terrible to have permanently damaged pain receptors because you either don’t feel pain, which might sound awesome, but it’s not, since you could hurt yourself really bad and not even know it. You could also feel pain really easy, and everything you would do would really hurt. Over-the-counter medicine could make it better, but it can’t completely get rid of it. I am glad I learned this, it could really help me with the content this unit.

  4. Enzymes are special proteins that speed up chemical reactions. A substrate is what an enzyme works on. Aspirin goes on the enzyme and sticks to the active site, not allowing the enzyme to connect to anything anymore, while ibuprofen goes to the active site, doesn’t break apart, not allowing anything to connect to the active site for a while, then the enzymes can get rid of the ibuprofen. I believe ibuprofen and aspirin work like competitive inhibitors which were demonstrated in trial 4. The reason for this is because the gloves drastically stopped any chemical reactions theoretically, just as ibuprofen and aspirin do, although not being 100 percent effective. It would be bad to change your pain receptors permanently because pain tells you to stop what you’re doing so you don’t from further harm yourself, so changing them could result in harm, or death. Congenital analgesia is when a person feels no pain, and there is no way to treat it. The only thing you can do is try not to hurt yourself if you have the condition.

    ReplyDelete
  5. The moment you start to say something about the pain you have people tell you to “take Ibuprofen” or “take Advil” without really knowing how it affects you. When you have pain, messages are sent to your brain so you know that it’s there and to be careful of it. When cells are damaged, they start producing tuning chemicals which can lower the threshold and cause extreme pain like just touch. Ibuprofen and Advil block prostaglandins by altering the active sites of enzymes that turn arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. But Advil and ibuprofen don’t actually know where the pain is in your body, they just go to all the pain detectors in your body. I personally never take pain relievers because I feel as though they alter the amount of pain your body can take so eventually you rely on pain relievers which sounds scary. If pain relievers can alter your pain detectors that’s not good because you could either stop feeling pain completely or not be able to take as much pain as before. I wonder if you never take pain relievers will your body be able to start relieving pain itself?

    1. I didn't know that its not good to take pain relievers. And I wonder the same thing will your body be able to handle the pain if you never take pain medicine.

  6. Veterans day is significant to me because my grandpa had served in the military as a U.S Army paratrooper. He served for a few years but never needed to go to war. After World War II the holiday was opened up to honor all veterans, not only people who had served in World War I. Congress moved this holiday to the third monday in October but it was moved back to November 11 because this was an important date to remember. The holiday is now celebrating not only those who served in war, but those who served their nation in peace as well. Although my grandpa did not go to war, he still served our country. We don’t usually anymore, but my family used to get together at my grandma and grandpa’s house for Veterans day to celebrate. We have an American flag hanging outside of our house during the spring, summer, and fall, and it is always lit up at night. Many people tie ribbons around trees to remember and symbolize those who are at war, or are serving in places far from home.

  7. An enzyme is a molecule that help speed up reactions in the body. A substrate is a substance or layer that the enzyme acts on. Aspirin works different than an Ibuprofen. Aspirin works like a “porcupine quill”. Half of it breaks off and stands as a blockade to any Arachidonic Acid entering Cox 1 and Cox 2 into the active site. On the other hand, Ibuprofen fit almost perfectly inside the active site also blocking the Arachidonic Acid from entering in either of the Cox’s active sites. I believe that Aspirin and Ibuprofen work similar to the competitive inhibition we practiced in our Penny Labs. In some ways, we could say that having no pain would be awesome, but this would be bad to have permanently because we need pain to protect ourselves from further injury. Feeling no physical pain is a rare condition known as Congenital Analgesia (aka Congenital Insensitivity to Pain or CIP). CIP isn’t treatable, and so far, there is no cure.

  8. A year after World War One, president Wilson decreed that all Americans should take a moment of silence at 11 am for the Veterans. Some people would wear paper poppies and every November a reef was laid on the monument of The Unknown Soldiers. I am related to two Veterans. My dad joined the air force when he graduated high school and my Uncle Ronnie was in the Vietnam War. To celebrate and thank the Veterans, I donate food to them, I always thank them for their service when I see them and on Veterans day i always post a picture on social media thanking them for everything they do. What do you do for Veterans day?

  9. Around this time of year, everyone is very excited about the big holidays to come such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's day. Families start to make plans with relatives and start to put up decorations. But meanwhile, what very important holiday are we missing during this jittery time of year? Veterans day! Originally known as Armistice day, Veterans day was originally made as a day to remember the soldiers who fought for our country during world war I. But as the years have gone on, it has now become a holiday to honor all veterans who have served for our country. I have a grandfather that first served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1959. He then decided he wanted to be a pharmacist, so in 1959-1962, he went into the nursing program in the Marines to get the medical background he needed for college. He served as a Marine on a ship to support the Navy. He was stationed in North Carolina and traveled to Puerto Rico and Cuba. To thank all of the Veterans on Veterans day, I talk to my grandpa and hang out with him. Veterans day once was in October but now it has switched back to the original day, November 11 to remember the day we signed a truce with Germany to end World War I. There are currently over 21 million veterans living in the US today. This day is for all of the people who sacrificed to make our country great, so it's important to celebrate and thank our US Veterans.

  10. Veterans should be remembered even if you didn't have one in your family. My grandpa served in the army. Cool thing is, he served with Elvis. Yes... the Elvis Presley. He passed later, however it wasn't from serving. Usually we just talk about how much we miss him and talk about how fun he was to be around. My dad usually ends up crying but overall it's nice to learn about someone I never got to know. he died before I turned 2.

    1. I think its really cool that you and your family still talk about your grandpa. I don't have any veterans in my family but I definitely appreciate all that the people in the Armed Forces have done for us. I know we wouldn't be living in the country we are today without them.

  11. Almost the entire side of my moms family served in some part in the army, but most significantly my grandpa served almost his entire life. He served from when he was 20 until 45 and was many different positions. This holiday is in order to honor all vetrans especially the ones on the field (fighting). I don't do anything to celebrate this occasion except thanking my family, but I would like to do more.

  12. Veterans day is a day to remember all solders who risked their lives for their country. This national holiday takes place on November 11. Veterans day is important to me because my Grandfather was in the navy a period of time, and that is where he met my Grandmother. So if he wasn't in the Navy I wouldn't be here so it is really important to me. I think that it was a bad idea to change the day because of it's history. Veterans day is important to everyone in the world because it is a day to support the people protecting our rights.

  13. Veteran's day is celebrated on the 11th day of the 11th month, or November 11th, every year. It is on that day to signify the day that ceasefire happened in World War 1. It used to be called Armistice day and was only celebrated for the veteran's that fought during WW1. I know several veterans including my dad and grandpa. Neither of them every saw any warfare but they both did serve. I honor the veterans by thanking them for what they did, even if they didn't ever actually go to war. Not that people shouldn't thank a veteran everyday, but should definitely thank them on Veteran's day.

  14. Enzymes

Enzyme’s are special proteins that speed up chemical reactions in our body. Substrates are what the enzyme is working on or trying to change. Most people take ibuprofen or aspirin when cells in their body are damaged making pain come more easily. These cells release a chemical called arachidonic acid, causing a lower pain threshold, fever and inflammation. Both Aspirin and ibuprofen block production of prostaglandins, a tuning chemical. Aspirin enters the active site and breaks off and permanently inactivates Cox-1 and cox-2. Ibuprofen enters the active site but doesn’t change the enzyme but blocks it for the time it is in your system. It might be bad to permanently change your pain receptors because you might rely on a painkiller too much and need it to feel good all the time. Congenitals analgesia is the inability to feel pain. They treat it by therapy and antibiotics.

  15. Veterans day was a holiday that was originally named Armistice day that started on because of peace treaty signed during WW1 on the 11th day of November 1918. The holiday was originally just to honor those that have survived in WW1, but evolved over time to celebrate those that had served during war, to those who have served our country at any time. My extended family has some military background, and I have a lot of respect for our troops. I'm very happy that we have a holiday to celebrate them, they deserve it. But I did not realize how much the holiday has changed over time.

  16. Every year on November 11th Americans and people around the world celebrate the men and women who have served/serving for our country, living or deceased. Originally called Armistice Day, dates back to the signing of a truce between Germany and the Allies during World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Every year in Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknowns a Color Guard Ceremony is held representing and honoring all branches of the of the military. In 1954, the name changed occurred from Armistice Day to Veterans day to honor all veterans and for 7 years this holiday was celebrated in October instead to offer a 3 day weekend.Though, in 1975 President Ford changed the holiday back to its initial day, recognizing the historical importance. Veteran’s Day is significant to my family because several members of our family have served in the Army, Navy, and Airforce, including my neighbor Pat, who served as a Marine during 1967-1973 and my Grandfather served as a Marine during the years 1967-1973 also. To thank those men and women who have served our country, my family donates to the Disabled Veterans of America and I often call my Grandpa and Pat to express my appreciation.

  17. Enzymes are different proteins that are used to speed up the process of chemical reactions within the body. Enzymes take substrates which are the substances that chemically react within the body. Aspirin breaks half of it's self inside the active site of Cox-1 and Cox-2 while Ibuprofen entirely fills those enzyme's active site. Ibuprofen and Aspirin work more as a competitive inhibitor as it doesn't alter the shape of an enzyme and doesn't permanently change affect the active sites of those enzymes. If you were to permanently affect pain receptors, it most likely end up as a negative connotation for the fact it could possibly stop pain altogether and therefore cause you to no longer feel anything that is injured or wrong within your body. Congenital analgesia is a condition were you are unable to feel pain, which is bad for the reason above, there is currently no cure of the condition.

  18. Enzymes are molecules that help speed up reactions in your body and a substrate is a substance or layer that an enzyme works on. COX-1 and COX-2 are enzymes and arachidonic acids are the substrates. Aspirin and ibuprofen are competitive inhibitors that work in two different ways. Aspirin breaks itself in half and blocks the active site from the substrates from forming an enzyme/ substrate complex, permanently deactivating the enzyme. On the other hand, ibuprofen simply “sits” in the active site, temporarily blocking the enzyme from forming with a substrate (arachidonic acids). While some think that aspirin is better because it permanently deactivates the enzyme, this could potentially be harmful to you because it's “killing” off your COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes which means the arachidonic acids will have no enzyme to pair with, weakening your sense of pain.

Both of my mom's parents served in the army. My grandma was stationed here in the U.S. and my grandpa was stationed partially in the U.S. and Vietnam. To honor the men and women who have served our country, I thank them for their service, and donate food and money towards many fundraisers.

Veterans' day started off as Armistice Day and was just for honoring those who had served in the Armed Forces in World War 1. In the year 1954 President Eisenhower changed the day to be called Veterans Day. This day would still be celebrated on the 11th day of the 11th month (November 11th) but it would now be honoring all people who had served in the Armed Forces. Dead or alive. 21. Picture this; You are riding in a tank down a road in Afghanistan. All of the sudden you hear a large explosion and a sudden pain in your side. This happen to my aunt when she was stationed in the Middle East. She was seriously injured but made an almost complete recovery. When this happened she was only 20 years old. Today, she is 27 and still struggles with PTSD. That is why veterans day is so important to me. Coming from a large military family, I have heard plenty of stories about serving in different countries. Everytime I hear them I think how fortunate I am to hear these stories because I know that my family survived. But not everyone's that lucky. Some people never come back. They have payed the ultimate sacrifice and should be honored for that. Last year, as a way to thank the veterans who are still serving, the group I was in made care packages and sent them overseas.

  23. On November 11th, people across the US come together to celebrate Veterans Day. Even if you don’t know any Veterans, chances are you still celebrate it. Veterans day, initially called armistice day to celebrate the end of the Great War, wasn’t always on november 11th. It was changed once to the 4th monday in October, but eventually changed back by Gerald Ford. I know several veterans myself, including my grandpa and uncle who were both in the navy

  24. Veterans Day is very important day, it’s the day where we honor the veterans that had served us and to recognize the soldiers that fought so hard for our peace and independence. Exactly 1 year later after the fighting which happened in 1919 which was the first anniversary of the end of world war 1, President Wilbur Wilson gave a moment of silence at 11 am on November 11 to remember the armistice and embrace the peace. What I also learned in the video was every year the president or a representative would lay a reef on the monument, I thought that was pretty cool. I remember in elementary school we would write letters to the veterans and then the school would actually send them out to them and they would read them. In the letter we would always start them of saying thank you for serving our country and ask them questions, the letters would always be almost a full page because we had so much to say to them and to of course thank them.

  25. An Enzyme is a catalyst that speeds up chemical processes in the body. The substrate is the smaller object the Enzyme acts on. By lining less, Ibuprofen irritates places like the stomach and esophagus less. If you permanently changed your pain receptors, it would be very dangerous and you wouldn't know if you were injured. Congenital analgesia is a condition that causes you to not feel pain, and you can’t fix it.

  26. Veterans day is the day that we honor all of those who have put everything on the line for their country. Originally it was created to celebrate the soldiers of the great war (WW1) after world war 2 and many other small conflicts president Dwight D Eisenhower changes the holiday to celebrate all veterans. In my family we go to my great grandfathers grave and put flowers on it. I think it is cool how long the holiday has been around.

  27. I think that veterans day is a very important day here in the United States. Why wouldn't we celebrate the peoples lives that have served our country, and who have died for us as well. But we shouldn't just have to celebrate our troops for one day, they should be thanked always for what they have done for this country. Because without them, none of us might be here today. The troops jobs are to fight for our country, and it is so sad to see these ex marines who are homeless and starving. This is unacceptable. As Americans, we should help our fellow soldiers get back on their feet, and help them find jobs so they can make money and buy the things that they need to sustain life. Or, we should have specific places where veterans can go where they have a roof over their head, clean clothes, somewhere nice to sleep, and fresh water and food to eat. At the very least we should at least try to help out the people who protected us from other countries by fighting for us as Americans.

  28. I chose to do my paragraph on enzymes. An enzyme is a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring a specific biochemical reaction. An enzyme attaches to a substrate. This process is called active site where the enzyme attaches to the substrates.A substrate is what an enzyme acts on.Enzyme activity can be reduced or stopped.A competitive inhibitor can cause this.A competitive inhibitor is a substance that enters the active site of an enzyme in place of the substrate where structure it mimics.

  29. This was a very interesting video, I learned that an enzyme is a special protein that speeds up chemical reactions and lowers the amount of activation energy needed for chemical reactions. I know that a substrate is what an enzyme works on. This video was interesting to me because it showed me that aspirin permanently stays in your enzymes and blocks them whereas ibuprofen only stays for a certain amount of time later your enzymes can “spit it out”. I believe that painkillers work as a inhibitor because they inhibit the active site of an enzyme and do not allow the enzymes to connect to substrates. It is really bad to damage your pain receptors because if you do you will not feel pain which could lead to you hurting yourself because you would not know that you are hurt. You would not get signals when you damage your body. Congenital analgesia is the not having the ability to feel pain. There is no known cure to this disease you can only treat the symptoms.

  30. 1918 marked the end of world war 1 and the begining of a new tradition to honor the soldiers who had fallen in such a horrific war. Then, many years later it was renamed veterans day to honor not just those who fought in world war 1, but all veterans for there services. Veterans day is a very special day for the whole country. Veterans keep us safe, putting there lives on the line every day to protect our country. They did what they had to in order to keep us safe and secure. We all need to show our appreciation for what they have done to keep us safe. For me, veterans day is a day to celebrate those who lost there lives, and anyone who fought in the line of duty. I personally could not imagine what it would be like to do what these people do and see what these people see in the line of duty. You have be extremely touph both mentally and physicaly. I can imagine that leaving your friends and family at home is also a very hard thing to do for many people. Just the thought of that would be horrifying, which is why we need to let them know that we support them. Many veterans dont even know if they will be coming back, serving in places like the middle east, vietnam, and other territories that America has previously fought in. With all the sacrifices they make every single day to protect us, it is only right that we do something for them. Although I dont know anyone who served in the military, I still think that its important that if you see anyone who has served, to tell them that they are appreciated. It really means a lot to them to know that what they did was not for nothing and to know that what they did made a difference in our lives.

In the case of pain, the enzymes, are Cox-1 and Cox-2, with the arachidonic acid as the substrate. Aspirin is different than Ibuprofen because it permanently keeps the arachidonic acid from entering the enzyme, while Ibuprofen is only temporary with how it works. Ibuprofen and Aspirin act as competitive inhibitors. 32. Veteran’s Day will forever be a special holiday in my heart. Both of my grandpas served in vietnam and many close family friends serve currently as well. Veterans Day started on November 11th, 1919 in honor of Germany signing a peace treaty on that date the year prior. For a short time it was changed to October, but in 1974 they changed it back to November. In elementary and middle school we used to donate necessities to soldiers and write them letters, this year my family and I got a package together filled with things soldiers need to send and donate to troops. Every time I see a soldier or veteran I make sure to thank them and I encourage all of you to do the same.

  33. Veteran's Day plays a huge role in my life as I know numerous people that are either family or friends that currently do or did serve our country. Every year on November 11th I will try my best to reach out to the people I know either by text or phone call and just give them a simple thank you for everything they have done for our country. I hear a lot of stories from my parents about my dead grandfathers who served in the Vietnam War and I'm also lucky to be able to talk to my uncles and cousins who currently serve. What I admire the most about these people is that they act very silently without asking for much praise or recognition. I also learned some new things in this video about the history of Veteran's Day such as the fact that it was first celebrated on November 11th 1919 shortly after the end of World War I. While I may not do anything super special tomorrow, this video is certainly a good reminder to thank a few veterans when I get the chance to.

  34. Veterans day was originally called amnesty day to celebrate the end of ww1. It became a holiday in 1938. Veterans day to me is a day that I show appreciation to those who have or are serving this country. Because thanks to them, I along with everyone in America can live a life without any worries as they risk their life to protect ours. But I truly believe it shouldn't take a holiday in order for us to honor these great, brave men and women

  35. Veterans Day is an opportunity for all of us to count our blessings, and be thankful for what those in the military have done for us. So many of us go through our daily lives not even thinking about what opportunities are available to us, and it’s all thanks to veterans and current soldiers. Without them, many of us wouldn’t be in school right now, or have an opportunity to get a job. These privileges have become so familiar to us that we don’t even think twice about it, but Veterans Day is our time to do so. My mom’s dad was drafted and put in the army, but was never required to fight as it was towards the very end of the Vietnam War. While he hasn’t given as much as others, I am still thankful towards him for being ready to invest his life into the country. This day goes back years until World War I, and ever since has been an opportunity to thank all fields of our army. From marines to the Air Force, Veterans Day is an opportunity to thank each and every one of them for allowing us the opportunity to live our lives.

  36. Enzymes are special protein that speed up biochemical reactions. A substrate is what the enzyme is trying to change. Aspirin is different that ibuprofen because the goes into the active site part of the enzyme and stays there and the substrate can’t get into the enzyme. But what the ibuprofen does is similar but the enzyme can push the ibuprofen out. THese two medications are like competitive inhibitors because they are the ones that stop the binding of the enzymes with the coenzymes. It would be bad if you permanently damaged your pain receptors because then you could be going through pain but you brain doesn't know it because you damaged your pain receptors which means you could cause some serious damage to yourself. Congenital Analgesia is a disease that people can get from birth and in that disease a person can't feel any pain or they feel too much pain. A way to treat this it to take over the counter drugs.

A substrate and enzyme work together to make these chemical reactions, but the difference between the two is subtracts are what is being broken down. Aspirin and ibuprofen both serve the same purpose, but they work differently. Aspirin breaks off in the active site blocking the substrate from connecting with the enzyme, releasing no pain to the inhibitor. Ibuprofen lays in the enzyme but can be removed a lot faster since it’s not as enduring as aspirin. It seems like aspirin would be an automatic choice since it eases pain for a longer amount of time, however it is not that healthy since it can deform the enzyme, dulling your senses permanently, which could be dangerous to you in reflex situations.

  38. An enzyme is a special protein that speed up chemical reactions. A substrate is what an enzyme works on. Asprin is different to ibuprofen because aspirin works by entering the active site and breaks half off blocking the arachidonic acid, whereas Ibueprofen, enters the active site but doesn’t break apart and can’t bind the arcachidonic acid. I think aspirin and ibueprofen work like competitive inhibitors which was trial 4 in the penny lab. Changing our pain receptors is bad because pain tells us when to stop whatever it is we are doing so then we don’t further harm ourselves. In result to changing them, you can hurt yourself without even knowing which can result in death. Congenital analgesia is a rare condition in which a person can’t feel pain. There is no way to treat it and has no cure so far.

  39. An enzyme is a special protein that speeds up chemical reactions and a substrate is what an enzyme acts on. Aspirin enters the enzyme and changes blocks the active site where as ibuprofen doesn't alter the enzyme. I believe that the pain killers go along with denaturation, because they change the enzyme. And changing the pain receptors is bad because it could cause you to not feel pain (which is very dangerous) or maybe excessive pain. Congenital analgesia is a condition where you can’t feel pain, although there is no cure, the treatment revolves around prevention of injury.

  40. Veterans day is significant to my family because I have three cousins that are in the army that are currently serving and my great grandpa served in world war 1. My family fosters kittens and this past weekend at the kitten adoption we had a special if you were a vet or are serving now you would get half off the price of the kitten. Veterans day holiday held on November 11 to celebrate the end of World War I. On this day we honor US veterans and victims of all wars. It was first called Armistice Day in 1954 but was later changed after World War II so all vets could be recognized on this day.

  41. I think that Veteran’s day is a very important holiday. Right now, a lot of people are excited for Christmas coming soon. I’m excited too, but I think we need to take time to think about the men and women who serve our country. Also, I never really knew the difference between Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. Veteran’s Day celebrates the living and dead war veterans, and Memorial Day is celebrating the dead veterans. Tomorrow, I think we should all take time to think about all the men and women who served our country.

  42. An enzyme is a special protein that speeds up a chemical reaction. They work by attaching to the substrate which is what the enzyme is working on. Aspirin is different than ibuprofen because aspirin enters the active site and then breaks off but leaves a part of itself in there while ibuprofen enters the active site and doesn't change it's shape or the shape of the enzyme. Although, both block the path of arachidonic acid so the pain isn't felt for the time being. Both ibuprofen and aspirin act as competitive inhibitors because they mimic the substrate in the active site but they don't alter the active site due to changes in the environment. Even though pain isn't enjoyable, it's important that we feel pain because it shows that our body is healthy and functioning properly. Congenital analgesia is an insensitivity to pain and can be treated with antibiotics but it depends how severe the case is.

  43. Veterans Day is a day to remember the heros of our country. Everyone on my moms side of my family has served in the military since 1900. Veterans Day means so much to me because without our military we wouldn't be here right now. They fought to protect us and this great country. I think a Holliday is a great way to honor veterans, but they should be honored all the time not just one day. And remember always donate to the veterans in need, they've done so much for you and your family. A simple thank you for your service goes a long way. These great men and women are true heros.

  44. Veterans Day is celebrated on the 11th of November. It is a day that we recognize and appreciate and honor thoes who have fought for America in wars. On this day I try to thank any and every veteran that I meet. They have risked and sacrificed their lives for America and all Americans to whom they don't even know. Many people that I know along with my grand father are veterans and I always thank them for what they've done. Without veterans and thier efforts who knows where we would be. It's truly a gift to have people as amazing as those who have fought for our freedom because they have put themselves thru and suffered thru things we can't even begin to comprehend. Many people I believe take advantage of the security and freedom we have in America compared to other countries. Yes our country isn't perfect but because of the efforts of people such as veterans we are still here and will hopefully continue to be for a long time. So on Veterans Day thank those who have served around you because you might not have been here if it wasn't for them.

  45. An enzyme is a special protein that speeds up chemical reactions. The enzyme connects to a molecule, called the substrate. The difference between aspirin and ibuprofen is that, with enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, aspirin sticks to the active site. This stops arachidonic acid from fitting with the enzymes. In ibuprofen, however, doesn’t change or break up the enzyme like aspirin. It attaches to the active site, so arachidonic acid can’t bind with the enzyme at all. The enzyme can get rid of the ibuprofen whenever it chooses. I think that aspirin and ibuprofen are like competitive inhibitors. They both enter the enzymes active site, where they mimic a substrate. It would be a terrible idea to change your pain receptors because of you feel too much pain, you’d be in a constant state of agony, but if you feel too little, you wouldn’t be able to tell when you might be hurt. The condition where you cannot feel pain is called congenial analgesia.Treatment for this condition is normally symptom management and preventing injury and infection.

  46. .After watching the videos of Veterans Day I realized that I never really knew much about it. I found it interesting that Veterans Day also has two other names as well. I do not have any relatives in my family that have served or are serving but I thank those who are, because they're taking time away from their families and risking their lives for us, and I don't believe people realize this. Veterans Day or Remembrance Day started with a signing of an Armistice between us and the Germans to end WWI on November 11, 1918 at 11:00. On November 11, 1919 President Woodrow Wilson declared it to be a holiday. For years after countries would celebrate along with us, until it got really popular in 1938 when congress made it a legal holiday. After WWII and the Korean War americans wanted it so that we were honoring all deceased veterans not just from WWI. In 1954, Dwight Eisenhower changed Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In 1971 they changed the date of Veterans Day to October 4 so that people could have a long weekend but it didn’t catch on too well. The date was simply too important to forget. Though I may not know any veterans in my own family I thank any veterans I know through my church for serving.

  47. November 11th marks the day our country celebrates Veterans Day, honoring ALL veterans, who have either served or are serving, alive or dead. Originally known as Armistice Day, it marked the November 11,1918 truce between the Allies and Germany in WW1 and honored the veterans of that war. In 1954, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day to commemorate veterans of wars. This holiday is special to me and my family as my great-grandfather is a WW2 Navy veteran and my grandfather a Vietnam Air Force veteran. They have both passed away and are buried in the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery. While we don't always visit their graves on Veterans Day, we do so several times throughout the year. It's such a beautiful, powerful and solemn place to reflect and honor those who have served. In elementary school, I created stars honoring my grandfathers and they are hung every year on the school's Veterans Honor Wall. In more recent years, I've participated in Operation Gratitude, gathering self-care products and fun items for veterans care packages. And just last week, my sister and I donated our Halloween candy to a project sponsored by my Dad's work. They collect leftover candy and take it to different Veterans homes and clinics for veterans to enjoy. All simple gestures, so very much appreciated.

  48. Enzymes are special proteins that help speed up chemical process in our body, what the enzyme is working to produce/change is the substrate. An example of an enzyme substrate relationship is pain relievers or just pain in general. Pain is caused by an substrate that attaches to an enzyme and sends out a signal or reaction to our body, that we know as pain. Ibuprofen and Asprin are two pain killers that help relive the pain, just in two different ways. Asprin is a needle like shape that attaches to the enzyme and breaks off at the tip, this causes the substrate to be blocked from connecting with the enzyme, which in turn blocks pain, this eventually cause the enzyme to die off. While Ibuprofen enters the enzyme and just blocks off the substrate, and eventually disappears. In the penny lab denaturation would be like Asprin, permanently changing the enzyme, while Ibuprofen would be a competitive inhibitor, just blocking/coating the enzyme. The risk of permanently changing pain receptors would be a higher pain tolerance, which seems desirable but in long term can cause you to injure yourself or become injured and be unaware. This is called congenial analgesia, which is basically a disorder where you are incapable of feeling pain. This may sound serious, and even though there is no complete cure, there are ways that this can be treated. By taking antibiotics, and behavioral and occupational therapy and by just becoming more educated on congenial analgesia itself, panties may see improvement.

  49. An enzyme is a substance that speeds up chemical reactions and cannot be used up or change. A substrate is what the enzyme is working on or trying to change. Aspirin and Ibuprofen are very different. Aspirin forms like a needle and enters the active site, then half of it breaks off. The “needle” totally blocks the channel where substrates fit, which permanently deactivates the enzymes. Ibuprofen, on the other hand, enters the active site but does not break apart or change the enzyme, but it blocks the entrance where enzymes fit. Enzymes can just push out the Ibuprofen while enzymes are permanently changed. Aspirin could be considered denaturation and Ibuprofen could be considered a co-enzyme. If you change your pain inhibitors then you’re pain tolerance might change so you might be hurting yourself, but you do not even know. Congenital analgesia is a condition given to you at birth that does not allow the person to feel pain.

  50. I have multiple war veterans in my family, my grandpa had fought in the Royal Army for Great Britain, and my Great Uncle fought in Vietnam. Veterans Day is very important not just for us but for everyone to recognize how the veterans gave their today for our tomorrow. Who knows where we would be today without our veterans? I will be sure to thank them for risking their lives for ours.

  51. Veterans day is celebrated every year on November 11th. It is to honor the millions of men and women in the US armed forces. Back then it was called Armistice day. The first Armistice day was celebrated on November 11th, 1919. To honor these people on November 11th at 11:00am they have a color guard ceremony. In 1954 the name Armistice day was changed to Veterans day. An interesting fact is that for 7 years Veterans day was celebrated in October. The difference between Memorial and Veterans day is that Memorial day is to honor the veterans who have passed away but Veterans day is to honor both the ones who have died and who are still alive.

I do not have any family members who have served, but some of my Leaders in Boy Scouts Have served in various wars.On The week of Veteran's Day is when we recognize those men for the services they have provided for us.

But in 1954 it was changed to Veterans Day and has been called that ever since

  54. An enzyme speeds up chemical reactions. In pain medicine, cox1 and cox 2 are the enzymes and arachidonic acid is the substrate. Aspirin is different from ibuprofen because in aspirin, only half it stays in an enzyme, and ibuprofen is not changed. I think that ibuprofen and aspirin are competitive inhibitors. It would be bad to change your pain recepters because it could lower your threshold for pain. Congenital analgesia is a condition where you can't feel pain. There is no known cure but if you have it you are advised to not get hurt.

Aspirin is a competitive inhibitor so it changes the enzyme so it can not join together with a substrate. Ibuprofen is an example of denaturation. it coats the enzyme and causes it to not work as well. It would be bad to permanently change your pain receptors because you could feel pa lot of pain all the time or you could not feel pain and not know that you're hurt. This is called congenital analgesia. There is no known cure for it.

Personally I don’t really do anything on veterans day. Veterans day is always celebrated on the 11th of November.

  57. Enzymes are molecules that speed reactions up like COX-1 and COX-2. Substrates are substances that an enzyme works on like arachidonic acids. Aspirin is different than ibuprofen because aspirin breaks itself in half and blocks the active site from the substrates from forming an enzyme/substrate complex which deactivates the enzyme. Ibuprofen just sits on the active site and temporarily blocks the enzyme and substrate from connecting. It would be bad to permanently change your pain receptors because you wouldn’t be able to tell if you were hurt. Congenital analgesia is a condition that causes you to not feel pain (I watched a documentary about this, it’s very interesting!) and its untreatable.

  59. This week's blog post was about veterans day. Veterans day is a very important holiday in America's history. It originally was created to honor the peace after WWI and WWI veterans. Later America changed the holiday to honor all veterans, even those that served during a time of peace. As of now I'm not related to any veterans, but I'm very grateful for their service and for protecting me, my family, and America.

  60. Veterans Day to me is a very important day to commemorate the special people risked their lives for the the betterment of the country. When I think of veterans I am reminded that they are the reason why we have a country of freedom. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual commemoration, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. This relates to me because both my dad and my grandpa served in the armed forces. My dad was a fighter jet pilot in the air forces and now he serves as the emergency preparedness liaison officer for Illinois. For Veterans Day, my family usually does some sort of community help or donations to help the soldiers that are currently on the battlefield. Overall, Veterans Fay is a very important day that everyone should recognize because their life would not be what it is today with the past soldiers who served to protect us.

  61. Enzymes are catalysts that speed up chemical reactions by reducing the amount of activation energy required to start the reaction. Substrates are the molecules that enzymes are attaching to and speeding up chemical reactions. Aspirin and Ibuprofen, two different pain relievers, are examples of competitive inhibitors. Both of the medications enter substrates and block enzymes from attaching to the enzyme. Aspirin never gives into the attacking enzymes, which results in the substrate permanently deactivating. Ibuprofen, however, eventually gives in and allows the enzymes to enter the substrate. The substrates are responsible for sending our brain messages about pain. In other words, without substrates, we wouldn’t feel pain. Ibuprofen will only block those pain messages temporarily while aspirin permanently blocks them. This is not good because if we can’t feel pain then we will hurt ourselves without knowing it.

  62. Veterans day is important to me as its a day when we can all come together to celebrate and mourn those who had fought and died in the war, its a day that brings many together as a community to understand the realities of war and what it truly means for us. Though I'm not related to anyone who has served I know a few friends who do have relatives that have. Veterans day, originally called Armistice day was made a year after the a peace treaty between Germans and the allies on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marking an end to world war 1. Americans would go on to honor unknown soldiers who died in the war on this day. It would then be named Veterans day and would honor all who have served. I personally tend to sit down and watch videos or documentaries on war.

  63. Enzymes are a substance that acts as a catalyst that speeds up chemical reactions by reducing the amount of energy that is required to do an action, activation energy, to start the reaction. The substrate is what connects with an enzyme. Aspirin acts like a spine from a porcupine and it goes into the enzyme and breaks off so that the substrate can't bind with the enzyme, but ibuprofen however just goes into the activation site of an enzyme, but the enzyme can refuse it and spit it out. Aspirin and ibuprofen act like competitive inhibitors. Pain receptors are there so that you are aware of the world around you, so if you got rid of them, you wouldn't ever feel if something can or is harming you. congenital analgesia is when you can't feel pain in any part of their body when injured, and sadly, there is no known cure to congenital analgesia.

  64. Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions in our bodies. They reduce the amount of active energy required to create a chemical reaction. Substrates are the the second piece of the puzzle, they fit into the enzyme. Aspirin is a inhibitor it goes into the enzyme like a spike, the substrate cannot fit into the enzyme anymore. But ibuprofen just coats the enzyme. They are both inhibitors. If we permanently changed out pain receptor we would not know when we are harming ourselves. Congenital analgesia is a disease where you cannot feel pain. There is no current treatment other than having someone make sure your not hurting yourself.

  65. Enzymes are catalysts that lower required activation energy and speed up a chemical process. In the video, the enzymes are Cox-1 and Cox-2 and the substrate is arachidonic acid. Aspirin differs from ibuprofen because aspirin permanently attaches itself to the active site of the enzyme while ibuprofen temporarily settles itself into the active site until the enzyme pushes it out. They both stop the arachidonic acid from entering the active site but ibuprofen only stops it temporarily. Ibuprofen and aspirin both act as competitive inhibitors since they both enter the active site and prevent the enzyme from working. Yes, it would be bad to permanently change your pain receptors because then you could receive pain and not feel it until it’s too late. Contenginal analgesia is a rare disease where a person can’t feel pain. There is no current cure but to help with treatment you just make sure to prevent receiving pain and infections.

  66. Veterans Day is important to me because my grandfathers both served in war and my uncle is in the military reserves. My uncle has been stationed in California, Iraq, and Germany. My grandfather on my dad’s side has been to the aftermath of Nagasaki and Hiroshima and served in the Vietnam war. He was in the Air Force. My grandfather on my mom’s side served in the Vietnam war. Sadly both my grandfathers passed away. About a century ago, President Wilson decreed a day of silence for fallen soldiers after World War 1. Which I believe is well deserved, being recognized and being the savior of our country. That's truly wonderful. There isn't much I do on the day, I usually give a moment of my time to thank my grandfathers and others who had served for us.

  67. Veteran's Day is very important to me because of its celebration of the most important men and women in the country; those who serve it in the military. I have two cousins (brother and sister to each other), one, Bobby, is currently stationed in Arizona, while the other, Becky, who has been relieved of service after suffering due to PTSD. Becky was an army captain deployed in Afghanistan when she had to be removed. My great-great-great grandfather John W.N. Doak fought for the Union in the civil war, becoming ill in 1864 and dying just after he had a son in 1865. This holiday is especially important to me because of the aforementioned veterans, because of their sacrifice and service both on the battlefield and off it. These people definitely serve as a role model to me, because of their willingness to risk their lives for the good of the country. Each of us can only hope we could achieve that level of bravery and honor.
