This is another great video clip that you picked out about overpopulation.
Watch the two video clips above and read the short article from Scientific American.
We will discuss Thomas Malthus in the Evolution Unit at the end of the school year, but what do you think right now? Do you agree that we are facing a huge problem of overpopulation? What will happen to resources? Does overpopulation have an effect on climate change? What do Trump and Clinton have to say about climate change? (You will have to do a little searching the internet for the answers.) What do you think we should do? What laws would you suggest to fix the problem?
In a scholarly paragraph (at least 5 sentences long), frame a response to the videos, article and questions above. If you chose to focus more on one than of the issues above, I am totally fine with that. Some students are really interested in the election; therefore, it would be interesting for you to write more about the political aspect of this problem. Others are definitely focused on biodiversity and saving the plants and animals of our planet, You may want to look at the rates of extinction. Are we facing another period of mass extinction? In addition to your post, you will also need to respond to at least one of your classmates.
We humans are facing a problem with overpopulation if our population continues to grow as rapid as it is now. Resources will probably keep up with demand, as they have, even when people in the past thought only in a couple of decades we would run out of resources. But one of the major issues would be not having enough space. What would we do if we don’t have enough space? If we don’t have enough space people will die, because every being needs an adequate amount of space to live. So either our population would plateau, or we would have to go to find more space, wherever that would be. Overpopulation also has an effect on climate change. We already use a lot of fossil fuel to power the humankind currently, so if our population continues to grow we would have to use more fossil fuel. The fossil fuels we burn cause climate change, affecting the biosphere in a negative way. To stop overpopulation from happening we could limit the amount of children a family can have (which I don’t really agree with) and we could expand space (space exploration, building up, building down). To control climate change we could find alternative energy sources that don’t affect the Earth in a negative way such as solar power and wind turbines.
ReplyDeleteI really like what you said about the space problem. Though I don't necessarily believe overpopulation will be an issue, if it was, space would be such a big problem and I feel like the crime and violence rates would rise due to people feeling like they need certain resources to survive that other people have and they don't.
DeleteOverpopulation is an undesirable condition where the number of existing human population exceeds the carrying capacity of earth. Overpopulation is definitely becoming a concerning issue, but some people don’t think so, some people think it’s a myth. Apparently the United Nations Population Division recorded current population projections and that the human population is due to peak in 25 years and after peaking we will start losing 1 billion people every 25 years. The logic presented in the videos I watched seem very reasonable, but there is also plenty of proof that overpopulation is a valid concern. The human population has grown exponentially in the last 200 years. Even if we do stop growing, resources will most likely run out by 2050 just because of 7 billion- 10 billion people constantly using them. Even if human population is a myth or not, I feel it is important for us as humans to find alternatives to resources and ways to limit the growth of our species.
ReplyDeletehttps://overpopulationisamyth.com/
Great paragraph!I agree with the fact that our resources will run out soon with the constant demand. That's why I based my response on ways we can save these resources.
DeleteWoah! We really need to pay attention to our use of resources! Agree with you 100%
DeleteThere is a lot of evidence to support the concept of overpopulation. I agree that it is important for us to find alternatives for our resources. If we are not thinking about and addressing these issues today then we certainly will have many problems in the future.
DeleteWe definitely have an overpopulation problem. It’s like the first domino to a long chain of bad things. Overpopulation has almost everything to do with climate change, the more people there are, the more resources will be used, including the burning of fossil fuels and putting more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere worsening the already very present greenhouse effect. In recent debates, Trump has denied his previous statements on this subject. In a tweet he stated, “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” He basically flat out said it was hoax created to make more money. Trump denied ever saying this when brought up by clinton at the previous debate. His opinion is always changing so who knows what his real stance is. Either way, at this point there isn't too much we can do to fix the current population problem. The only thing we can do is attempt to decrease natality rates in hopes to slow down growth.
ReplyDeleteI love how you describe over population as "the first domino to a long chain of bad things," because it totally is. You overpopulate, you use more resources, the more resources you use the less there'll be, the less there'll be the quicker we die off...The domino effect. I also agree with your stance on Trump's statement. It's funny, to blame one country on global warming. It's like walking up to someone and saying that they harassed their child, when they've never seen the child in their life. Just ridiculous.
DeleteAs of right now, if humans keep reproducing at the same rate, in a few years overpopulation could become a serious issue. Not only would it affect those people in the countries with massive population size but also people all over the world. As population size grows, the amount of food and other resources sent to those countries grow. Food, and other necessary resources, will be depleted and possibly even eventually run out all together. Though this can seem frightening, as we see in the Scientific America article, this could very likely not even be an issue. Certain projections for the next 75-100 years show that the population of Earth may go down by as one million people by the year 2100. As long as the birth rate does not grow and continues to stay the same, overpopulation should not be an issue.
ReplyDeleteHopefully the population does start to go down. I think people are a little too reliant on the fact that the population will start to decrease that they aren't doing anything about it now. Instead people are waiting for this to happen because we, as human beings love to take the easy way out and relying on scientist predictions is just that.
DeleteI totally think that we are going to have a huge problem on our hands in the future with overpopulation. I think that should be a world wide law that you can't have over a certain amount of kids, maybe 2 or 3. But to prevent from even more people on the planet, we need to act sooner rather than later. Eventually, when there is too many people, we will run out of resources that we need, which will be a great detriment, but it could be kind of a good thing. It would force us to solve the problem of overpopulation, and it would make us mind new ways to power things. Like making electricity from wind mills or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree how this can be a positive situation. It will teach us how to respond to dire situations around the world.
DeleteI agree that we need to make a solution sooner rather than in the later stages. We seem to procrastinate and need to make laws immediately and get them ratified. Innocent people are losing many reliable resources, so making a change is very important for everyone.
DeleteI agree with the point you made about people being limited to 2 or 3 kids. Another solution could be introducing better birth control to developing countries to cut down on the children born.
DeleteI agree, not only will people come together to solve overpopulation, but it might teach everyone how to help each other out in the long run.
DeleteAll of these claims that the scientists make are very valid. I personally do not think that we are facing a mass extinction though. If I had to choose a side I would probably say that it is probably just the Earth cycle. Our population will grow and recede over time and it is ever changing. I am not saying that we don’t have an overpopulation problem (because we definitely do) but I don’t think we should be too worried about it. I am more concerned about us humans not using our resources carefully. That could lead to a lot of pollution and unsafe living conditions for humans. If over 7 billion tons of fossil fuels are used each day, then soon we could run out and our whole world could turn into the perfect setting for a dystopian movie. Fossil fuels are very helpful to us, but I think we shouldn’t be careless with them.
ReplyDeleteI like your different point of you. I don't really agree that it's just earths cycle but i like hearing what you had to say
DeleteI agree with what your saying about the earths cycle. However I am still on the fence about the two sides, whether it's just Earths cycle or it could be something else with overpopulation being apart of it. I also agree with that if we don't use our resources wisely we will have a much bigger problem.
DeleteI definitely agree that overpopulation is a big problem now a days. The more people on Earth, the less resources we have. We would eventually run out of clean water, food, space, and more, and the effects of this would be catastrophic. Also the more people we have, the more pollution in the air and water, which can kill off entire ecosystems and throw everything off balance. Even if other people don't agree on this overpopulation problem, I think we should find ways to limit our population growth.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you that the more people there are on the Earth, the less resources we will have. We should definitely try to find a way to limit population growth so that in the future, it won't be overpopulated.
DeleteI strongly agree that overpopulation is a big issue and that if in the future we don’t try to find a way to solve this problem, it will be an even bigger issue. Over the years, the population growth has really increased and will soon be a problem. It is said that each year population growth increases by 1.1% each year and that may not seem like a lot but it is. That’s 75 million each year. We will soon have more and more people and soon enough less and less resources for everyone. Also, I do think that we will run out of space for everyone if population keeps on increasing. Our resources will soon be limited and I really think we should soon start to pay attention to our use of resources and think about what to do about overpopulation.
DeleteI like the paragraph you have written and I agree with what you have to say. the more people we have on earth the more resources are going to be used and it can cause major disturbances.
DeleteOverpopulation
ReplyDeleteOur population is growing exponentially right now, leading to people worrying about overpopulation. Though I think our population is growing too fast, I think how we use our land is the problem. After doing some research, I found that population dispersion and use of resources are main problems. Roughly 30% of the world's land is dedicated to raising animals for food. If more people became vegetarian, in the long run, we would have more space for people. Going along with the clean water crisis it takes up to 5,000 gallons of water to make one pound of beef and only 100 gallons for a vegan meal. Since our population is expected to max out fairly soon we should find out ways to conserve resources. I think a population that is vegan or vegetarian will help.
This is really interesting. I had no idea that we use 30% of land just to raise animals for food. I agree we should find ways to conserve our resources, and I think your idea is a good start. We need to educate people on the overpopulation crisis, and help them understand why we need to save our resources.
DeleteOverpopulation is an issue, that if we don’t stop, could become a big concern. Our increase in population has grown tremendously over the last 25-30 years, and projections could continue to flourish. By 2100, there is supposed to be a level off, and the population will start to decline, but there is still some concerns to it. As the population rises, we will have to use more resources, causing more fossil fuels to be burned into the atmosphere. This releases more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which, in turn, would lead to climate change. Overpopulation does play a role in climate change because as we continue to use more resources as our population grows, more carbon dioxide is released, and the temperature rises at a significant rate. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton had much to say about climate change. Hillary Clinton, on the positive side, stated that climate change is “an urgent threat to our economy, our national security, and our children’s health and futures.” On the other hand, Donald Trump tweeted out that “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make United States manufacturing non-competitive.” He is saying that China is trying to make manufacturing more effective out there, so they are using more resources so that they can outdo the United States manufacturing. There isn’t much of a great solution that we could do, except make a law only allowing people to have a certain number of children. Although it is absolutely absurd, that might be the direction that we are heading towards. By decreasing natality rates, we are opening up more resources for the public, and releasing less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. I hope that we can find some alternative ideas to make overpopulation less of an issue in our world.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with what you said the population is growing and something needs to be done about it because it is the root of many problems like climate change. I also agree with you on your population statement we can't set a number of children but we can let some sick people die in order to lower the populations, especially in India and China they are a big problem.
DeleteI totally agree. I also said that the law would have to be a limit to the amount of children two adults can have together. Trump is not trying to do anything but Hillary wants to prevent Global Warming. I am VERY interested to see if elected P.O.T.U.S. will follow through with the concept, and how she will do it. Great paragraph, very well written.
DeleteOverpopulation is an issue that many people ignore around the world because we are scared of what follows. Mass extinction. In my opinion mass extinction begins with overpopulation. With overpopultion comes more demand for industry and inturn creates more global warming. With global warming aready an issue today in the forms of melting glaciers and stuff like that, theres no telling us what the consequences will be in the future. Not to mention how overpopulation would drain our resources. As industry is already draining our resources globally, overpopulation would just speed up the process until we have no resources left.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree. We dont want to open our eyes and accept this conflict. But one day its going to hit us hard and make us think why we didnt solve it.
DeleteI agree because this whole idea of overpopulation is tied to many parts of earth as you mentioned like global warming and if we have overpopulation then all these factors would play a big role and if their not taken care of we have big problems ahead of us.
DeleteI agree that humans are becoming "greedy" and in need of resources. Some of these resources coming from endangered species. And humans needing more of these leads to extinction. We as humans need to work together to help solve this problem, and cut down and shrink/stop the rapid population growth.
DeleteI agree with what you have to say. Although I don't believe there will be a mass extinction of the human race in the near future, the world will be a much worse place to live in. In an article I read I saw that human emissions could raise the global temperature by 11.5 degrees is 2100. This would have an effect on the world and could lead to many bad things.
DeleteI agree with you and I liked how you brought up how overpopulation can have drastic effects on our world in the future even more so than now. Many people will overlook how it can eventually lead to extinction if we run out of resources, but I liked how you touched on it.
DeleteOverpopulation on planet earth is a constant increase and may cause some problems. The more people we have on earth the more resources are going to be used. We can run out of many critical resources such as clean water, space, food, etc. If we keep on using all the resources and not trying to help add more into the world, it will be a constant decrease. If we keep on cutting down forests and adding pollution into the water and air this can be reckless. I think we should make sure we know what to do if our natural and most definitely needed resources run out.
ReplyDeleteI echo your thoughts...it is human activities that put much of our natural resources in jeopardy. Deforestation and emission of pollutants are reckless. And sadly, consciously reckless. Concerted efforts need to take place to ensure we value and conserve our already dwindling resources.
DeleteOverpopulation is definitely a problem we people on Earth need to address. In 200 years, the population on Earth went from 1 billion to 7 billion. That's an increasingly worrying amount of people. Estimations from the UN say that 15.8 billion people will exist on Earth by 2100. If so many people exist on our Earth, this is going to cause big problems to our resources. Clean water is becoming less common while we throw away food and energy as if it were a piece of lint. If we want to have an increasing amount of people on Earth, then we need to stop blaming others for this problem and to start blaming ourselves. Nothing is going to change this problem unless we change ourselves. We don't want future generations fixing the problem WE made. Why would you leave this world knowing you ruined it instead of trying to help it and leaving it to rot?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. The thought of our earth trying to support 15.8 billion people in 2100, while it's already struggling with the 7 billion people in 2016, is super overwhelming. We should start doing everything we can to slow down population growth.
DeleteOverpopulation is a topic in which people have many different opinions. Some may think that we have enough resources to sustain this exponential growth of the human population. But the reality is, we may have all the resources necessary to support everyone at the moment, but eventually,we will run low and not be able to support everyone. And that’s when we hit our carrying capacity. With these growing numbers in our population, we have to make more fuel, make more products and harvest more resources. Which can all have a negative effect on the environment. For example, the more people there are, the more cars are needed. Making them will pollute the air and require a lot of resources. Then, the pollution those cars produce will hurt the environment even more with the carbon monoxide they produce. This is already a problem now, so with the population growing, it will continue to get worse.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about the idea of humans reaching their carrying capacity. I think also when we run out of oil we will have to come up with a new fuel source so i'm not too worried about cars. In fact a noted geologist said the Earth could use more CO2 to feed plant life.
DeleteCouldn't agree more! We need to do something to help us and Earth!
DeleteI think we a facing a huge problem with overpopulation because it is causing too much strain on the ecosystems around us.Over time we will eventually run out of reusable and non-reusable resources because there will be too many people.I think that overpopulation has a bigger effect of climate change than we think because the burning of fossil fuels and chemicals is slowly heating our world up. Donald Trump thinks global climate change is a Chinese hoax. Hillary thinks that it is an urgent threat and needs to be dealt with right away.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that Donald Trump thinks global warming is a hoax. There is evidence all around us that says the direct opposite. How does he explain the climate change? How does he explain the rising sea levels? There is no evidence that supports his claim. I also think that people who say its a hoax are just scared of the truth. Based on many studies, the scientific community is almost completely sure that global warming exists.
DeleteOverpopulation is definitely a big problem, that can only get worse if we continue what we are doing now. If the population growth rate continues, we will have 11 billion humans on Earth in 2050. If we are already seeing problems with using too many resources, what will it be like then? As more people are being born, more and more resources are being used. We are constantly burning fossil fuels everyday, which is causing more pollution in the air. This can severely affect our ecosystems. We need to be more aware of what we are doing to our planet, and think of ways to cut back on using our resources, before it’s too late.
ReplyDeleteWow 11 billion humans by 2050 that's a lot of people but I totally agree that we should take action now before it's too late.
DeleteI totally agree. If we do not realize how we are damaging our ecosystem we can cause a drastic increase in mortality rate
DeleteI agree with everything you said. If we start damaging ecosystems due to our own greed we will start having more problems than overpopulation and lack of resources.
DeleteI think that Thomas Malthus believed that humans would exceed the carrying capacity of the planet. Even though his time was off we probably will because we are to ignorant to see the problem. I agree that we are facing a problem of overpopulation because like the rabbits in Australia nothing is limiting us from completely overpopulating. The only difference between us and the rabbits is that we are a global problem and not only for humans we harm animals by our overpopulation. I believe that resources will run out for humans and we will not be able to power our machines or have a shortage of food and medication which will control our population by killing millions. The resources are not the only thing affected by overpopulation the climate is also affected because most of the people alive drive cars, clear forests for homes and eat food from animal farms which produce a lot of methane. These all have a negative effect on the climate raising the temperature and killing many species because they do not have tolerance for the new warm temperatures. Trump has mostly denied climate change saying that it is a hoax and denying it exists. Though he has not released a lot of information on the topic. Unlike Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton sees climate change as a problem that needs to be solved the only problem is the Clinton does not know how to solve the problem. She said that she will use green energy like solar energy the only problem is that the government and companies lose money on solar panels because the are not worth it, they just don’t produce enough energy. I believe that instead of switching to solar energy like Clinton said we should be smarter and switch to geothermal and nuclear energy and totally ban the burning of fossil fuels like coal for energy. Another thing that we need to do is get into other countries business in order to prevent them from cutting down forests and killing endangered species. For example in China over the past year has killed 100 million sharks for shark fin soup. Our president just stands around and does nothing, absolutely nothing! Another catastrophic problem that we have is the methane that cows that are used for meat produce. The cows in our country contribute more to global warming than cars. The solution is cut down on meat. This does not mean that you won’t be able to buy a steak anymore it just means we need to make only what we are going to use. It is said that the U.S throws out one third of all food it produces. Overall people just need to open their eyes and see the problem. It is said that we are the smartest species on the planet, are we?
ReplyDeleteGood thoughts, good thoughts. I like what you said about Hillary and Trump, just about everything you said was spot on. However, I disagree with blaming our president for the killing of sharks in China. China is important in the way that they manufacture most goods our country uses, in addition to the problems we face here at home, it seems unfair to the government to expect them to take care of that specific problem. I also am aware of the incredible intake of meat in the U.S that could easily be solved in this simple way: Become a 5-day vegetarian. https://www.ted.com/talks/graham_hill_weekday_vegetarian?language=en
DeleteGood job :-)
I really like the connection to the rabbits of Australia. It really shows that we have no one to keep our growth rate in check. The only thing i disagree on is the suggestion of nuclear energy and that solar power can't create enough energy. There multiple studies that show that solar energy (if used correctly) can power entire countries. If we used nuclear energy it can create even more problems, like if we were unable to harness the nuclear energy there could massive nuclear disasters and an increase in radiation.
DeleteNice job on the last sentence! It really helped your writing make an impact.
DeleteI agree that our rapidly expanding population is a major problem in our society. There is so much more we could do to help so that humans don't end up facing a mass extinction. If we could just limit the amount of people being born, we could split the population in half. If we don't fix this problem before it's too late, Humans as a species could have a catastrophe on there hands. The world is already overpopulated as it is. Over 200 hundred years ago the human population was one seventh of what it is today. As you can see our population is growing way too rapidly to be sustainable. Due to medical advances and advances in agriculture, humans in today's world are not dying as fast as they are being produced. All we as a species need to do is limit our reproduction.
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely facing a huge problem of overpopulation as a whole. If we continue to overpopulate it will affect our resources that we need and use daily. Some reasons why we’re overpopulated is the fatality rate is growing, many couples and people plan to have large families, better medical facilities; everyday scientists come up with new solutions and technologies for ill patients that keeps them alive longer. With this population increasing we are going to run out of space and resources. With space being limited we have to make room by destroying properties and taking away farmland and destroying animals habitats. By destroying the animals habitat, where would they go? They would start to become endangered. With limited resources we would start to run out of clean water and food. I think we should acknowledge this problem and do our best to improve as a nation.
ReplyDeleteThomas Malthus’ theory, in my opinion, will unlikely happen. However, we could get into some serious trouble if we don’t control fertility and population rates around the world. This is a large issue we need to tackle, we need to control the fertility rates in countries such as the U.S., China, India, and many more, whose rates are very, very high. If we don’t, we could overpopulate, and our resources will become limited, but not completely gone. With years to come, it could mean overpopulation, but could also give us a chance to decrease in population, just like Europe. “Austria-based International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) recently unveiled research showing that if the world stabilizes at a fertility rate comparable to that of many European nations today (roughly 1.5), the global human population will be only half of what it is today by the year 2200, and only one-seventh by 2300.” On the Contrary, say we were to overpopulate, we would be adding more pollution to the air, which could cause a major increase in Global Warming. In our Presidential Debate, ‘Hillary Clinton lists "Protecting animals and wildlife" and "Climate change" as two major topics on her campaign website,’ but, ‘Trump doesn't include anything about the environment.’ I think if Hillary were to win, if she’s actually going to follow through with this, should have a law to prevent overpopulation. For example, you can have a maximum of two kids per family, or something like that.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.businessinsider.com/clinton-trump-environment-policies-plans-climate-change-platforms-2016-9 (Link for Pres. Debate info.)
I totally have to agree with you about the limited resources we would have and the increase in global warning. I like how you brought up the presidential debate because whether it's Hillary or Trump who becomes president, either one is gonna have to deal with this problem and hopefully try to figure out a solution.
DeleteThe estimates for population growth for the future is staggering. After watching the videos, I think that we are facing the problem of overpopulation and we are not doing enough to try and control it. If our population continues to grow as it is then our resources will only continue to decrease. According to Biologicaldiversity.org “The largest single threat to the ecology and biodiversity of the planet in the decades to come will be global climate disruption due to the buildup of human-generated greenhouse gases in the atmosphere”. Donald Trump believes that overpopulation is a myth while Hillary Clinton believes in overpopulation and that we should control it. I think we need to make people more attentive to overpopulation and its repercussions. Also we should provide easier access to birth control and family planning.
ReplyDeleteOverall I agree with Thomas Malthus, except I believe the problem is not food but space. Take a look at major cities like London, they have enough food. As more people are coming in, they decided to build up. Not enough, so now they're building down. We have enough resources and arent using them wisely. Eventually we wont have them but science exists and new ways can be made. Einsteins quote got my attention, because we made this problem but now dont have a clue how to fix it. Since we cant control the birth rate, eventually we wont have enough space for living. Maybe we should stop making large properties with no usage. We might not want to accept it, but we have created a large problem And if we who started it cant end it, there arent any hopes.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we are facing a problem with overpopulation. Our population size doesn’t stop growing because the birth rate is higher than the death rate. People are having a lot of babies while not many people are dying. This affects us because if there’s more people on earth then that limits the resources and food/water supply.
ReplyDeleteHumans are most definitely facing an overpopulation issue. If our numbers continue to rise, then resources will be run thin, and we will soon run out. Using more resources ultimately means using more fossil fuels, and that’s adding to our greenhouse gasses. So yes, overpopulation will affect climate change. Individually humans contribute a lot to the problem of climate change, and when our individual numbers rise, then we will not see an end to the problem of climate change. Trump believes that climate change is a myth. A rumor originating from China to scare the U.S. To help our problem I suggest that we put a limit on how many children a couple is allowed to have, but there should not be limits on adoption since adopting doesn’t require the creation of new life. They’re plenty of children who need homes, and adopting life can be just as meaningful as creating it.
ReplyDeleteI think after watching these videos on overpopulation that this is really a big problem that we should all be aware of and be careful of what we do. I think that it could be possible that we could go to 11 billion in 2050 but I also think that it might not happen. I think this because in developed countries the population isn't really increasing. For example in the U.S. the population is at a fairly even state if you look at the different age groups. In the future I think that the young age group is going to be decreasing more as less people have kids. On the other hand it could be a problem because in developing countries such as most of Africa there is a really high number of kids being born and those kids have kids and it keeps on growing and that's where is one of the problems. If we have too many people how can we as a planet feed all those “extra” people and provide them with the resources that they need. Overall I think that this issue of overpopulation can be solved with multiple ways but we (including politicians) have to make an effort to do so.
ReplyDeleteI agree with syed on the issue of overpopulation in developing countries which might not have as good of health equipment or ways to house an influx of people.
DeleteI think that overpopulation is defiantly a big problem. As our population increases we will most likely start to run out of resources and at this rate completely run out of resources at some point. This will force us to create laws to stop this. If it gets really out of hand there may be birth control laws and laws to help our forests survive. With overpopulation also comes with the problem of climate control. With the increase of people we will have to build more factories and cars, causing pollution, which in turn will make our world hotter and hotter. We will also run into the problem of lack of space. More and more housing will be needed and we'll have to tear down forests to make more room for us. Deforestation will cause a major loss of resources and a big a climate change. If all of this continues for a long time then we may even destroy Earth if we're not careful.
ReplyDeleteI believe that overpopulation, if not dealt with, will lead to major dilemmas within our home, Planet Earth. lessening the supply of resources because of an increase in natality will mean less supply for everyone to be sustained. Climate change will also be affected, with an increase in burning fuels, increase of trash, which will fill up space and cause more global warming. I think a limit to the amount of kids you can have will definitely help in the long run fixing the problem of overpopulation that we face now.
ReplyDeleteObviously this is a huge problem that we cannot ignore anymore. Resources always seem plentiful, but if you look at the countries that have limited resources it would become a larger problem for overpopulation to occur. If we keep growing at the rate we are then we’ll have to use more and more fossil fuels which can affect our climate changes in a negative way. Based off of the websites I found: http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/donald-trump-denies-existence-climate-change-bad-weather , it doesn’t seem like Trump believes in climate change, he doesn’t see that our planet has been warming up. As he states “I call it weather,” and that’s the this it’s not weather it’s not rain, snow, or hail it’s a worldwide heat up. Hilary states that climate change is the biggest problem we face today as shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81p5QFZFX1Y
ReplyDeleteAs frustrating as it is I believe that we need to create a system much like you hear in book where a couple can have a certain amount of kids. It’s a good idea to help keep our planet alive, but what I struggle with is the punishment for having more than the amount of kids….What are we going to do? Kill them? Give them a huge fine? Honestly, there seems to be no just answer.
I agree resources may seem plentiful now but what about in the future?
DeleteI agree with the fact that overpopulation will be a problem if our resources strain. However for the moment in some countries we seem to be “okay”. If the population keeps growing as fast as it is now I think our resources may start to run low. I don't really think that will happen anytime soon but in the future I do believe it could happen. Overpopulation in my opinion could have something to do with climate change because the more people we have the more resources we have to use more fossil fuels are burning and that's releasing lots of carbon. Not all that carbon can be taken in by plants and used by them so it's adding to our atmosphere and making it warmed. Our climate is changing and overpopulation can be one of the factors involved.
ReplyDeleteStudies by the United Nations show that the world population could be 11 billion by 2100, but what does this mean if it were to be true? The average population density will increase 50%. 50% of the population could face food shortages, right now we are only at 13%. 55% of the world population will live in air-polluted regions. Overpopulation may not be an immediate threat to our generation, but if we continue on the path we are on now more than half the population would have to experience these horrible things in 86 years. Resources will diminish and although the human race will survive, the conditions we will be living in are bad. We have to act now to try and prevent the damage we are capable of doing.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. If nothing is done about overpopulation we will be dooming humans and other to horrible living conditions and I think it will eventually lead to our species demise as it would only get worse
DeleteI agree that we need to do something about overpopulation now. We need to make a law that limits the amount of kids you can have.
DeleteI agree 100% that we are facing a problem with overpopulation. Humans are only hurting themsleves. There is expected to be 10 billion people living by 2050. This is insane! We are struggling with 7 billion now. Our resources like oil are going fast, and will only go faster if our population starts to grow. People really need to think about how they can contribute and help solve this problem. One way is to keep the population stable by having 2 kids, or only 1.
ReplyDeleteOur world is facing an overpopulation crisis, and it is worse in some countries more than others. In countries that are developing like Sub-Saharan Africa, overpopulation is a problem because they’re having too many children and they don’t have enough resources to support everyone. The way people are distributed around the world doesn’t help when it comes to overpopulation because in Europe, the natural increase rate is negative so that means that their population is declining due to the majority of their population being elderly. On the other hand, in places like Uganda the population is growing too fast and the majority of their population is younger and they’ll just keep having children. If the population in Uganda and many other countries keeps growing exponentially, eventually the ecosystem will reach its carrying capacity and won’t be able to support all the life. Overpopulation isn’t an issue that should be overlooked because it can lead to worse situations so we need to prevent before it gets more out of hand than it already is.
ReplyDeleteWe absolutely have a problem of overpopulation on our hands. Overpopulation has caused so many issues we face in the world today, including global warming. If the earth were less populated and there were fewer people polluting the air, global warming wouldn't be as much of an issue. Also, eventually, with the rate at which our population is growing we will run out of resources. People will no longer have food or clean water and we will run out of land to live on. The thought of the world running out of resources is such an absurd idea to try and comprehend, but it is a problem, and we need to start implementing ways to slow down population growth. At one time it was needed, but it no longer is.
ReplyDeleteI agree that eventually we will be facing a huge problem over population size, but at this moment it isn’t killing the Earth to have 7 billion people on it. If the populations keep growing the food supplies, shelter, and water supplies will become scarce and there won’t be enough for everyone on the Earth. I think overpopulation will affect climate change because we are already impacting the climate in the poles, because they keep getting warmer and warmer. Donald Trump does not believe in climate change. In fact, for years he's boasted that human-caused global warming is a hoax. He has even blamed China for the “concept of global warming,” and said cold days prove that global warming isn't real. Which I completely disagree with him, how do you explain why the poles are melting? How do you explain the Ice Age?
ReplyDeleteI can understand why Malthus thought overpopulation was a huge problem because at the time they had a harder time understanding/predicting population growth. Today I really don’t think we need to worry about overpopulation. Infact I don’t think Earth is really that overpopulated, I think the only reason we say that is because it's exponentially higher today than it was 200 years ago. From what we learned about growth models I think the population growth will wane off. When It comes to global warming, I don’t think we can control it is much as much as other people do. If we wanted to cut the temperature increase by .02 degrees Fahrenheit and the sea level by .01, the government would have to spend 366 billion over 14 years(according to NERA Economic Consulting). Climate has been changing since the beginning so I think unless someone comes up with a genius new way stop climate change, It’s out of our hands.
ReplyDeleteI think overpopulation is a giant problem in our world, especially for human beings.Human beings are finding cures and safety for many things causing there to be less limiting factors. If there are less limiting factors then the mortality rate will drop. If the mortality rate drops, then the population growth will not be stable and population will rise at an excessive rate causing an overpopulation. Overpopulation will cause pollution because we are using more resources and polluting our environment. Pollution can lead to an unsafe ecosystem causing organisms to die and slowly destroy our food webs on organism at a time. We must find a way to keep our population in tact.
ReplyDeleteThe world has many issues, but overpopulation seems like it could be the biggest one soon enough. We keep reproducing and with medication and technology getting more advanced people live longer. Eventually tons of babies will be born and people will take longer it die. Resources will dissapear and that will cause a huge issue. Humans and other species will not be able to live anymore. Global warming will get ten times worse, and our ecosystem will fall apart. Trump thinks climate change isn't a real issue, but Hillary does. We need to keep the population under control or else the ecosystem will collapse. We should make a law stating that a couple can have as many as 2 kids for ten years, and then they can have another one afterward. That would cut down the population a little bit. It would be a start at least.
ReplyDeleteI agree that overpopulation seems to be the largest problem we face, or at least one of the largest problems. I don't like the idea of limiting kids though. I think that we should start by avoiding births not needed that most young people produce.
DeleteOverpopulation is a big problem. As the number of people on this planet increases the number of resources will decrease. You see if we run out of clean water, food, etc., life won’t necessarily last too long. What could we do to stop overpopulation? Well, obviously genocide is not an option (we know how that turns out) but what we could do eventually is limit the amount of babies for a family like China or at least give it a try! If the number of people on this planet keeps increasing won’t we be in for a ride.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Billy. We should give what China did a try. You are right we cant have a genocide that is clearly not an option the only way to save this planet from running out of resources is to limit the amount of babies people have.
Deleteoverpopulation is a very important problem today that will only get worse as time goes on. If nothing is done about it many negative effects could arise. with our population rising from 1 billion to 7 billion in the last 200 years that rate of growth could bring us to 11 billion in the next 40 or so years. With the expansion of our population, we are going to need more resources which will cause us to expand out to make more land for agriculture and housing which will cause us to move into land used by native animals. We will also burning more fossil fuels faster causing negative changes in the climate. this problem is a one that effects not only us but the organisms around us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Damari, if the issue is not fixed then we will need more resources to accommodate for all these people. we will also run outta resources, including fossil fuels
DeleteI totally agree with you that overpopulation is an issue and that it will get worse as time goes. In my response I also mentioned fossil fuel usage, I wonder if we'll ever have an alternate source of energy. Even alternates tend not to be that good for the environment, although I hope that will change.
DeleteI agree that it is an issue that needs to be solved and can only get worse. I also understand how eventually we will run out of fissile fuels due to very high demand with overpopulation, also contributing to climate change as carbon dioxide is placed into the atmosphere because of the burning.
DeleteI agree with Damari, overpopulation byproduct of a problem that is our own making, resources are getting less abundant and with that is the land we use to harvest it. We are affecting our Earth and not positively.
DeleteMy love for animals and your posing the question "Are we facing another period of mass extinction?" really piqued my interest and curiosity. Scientists and researchers have varying opinions if we're on the verge, or in the midst of Earth's Sixth Mass Extinction. What they do agree on is that the current plant and animal extinction rates are 20 to 100 times faster than that of previous mass extinctions and that we humans are to blame. Ninety-nine percent of species considered "threatened" are at risk solely from human activities. Deforestation, hunting of animals, pollution and climate change all contribute to the unusually high extinction rates. There is general agreement amongst scientists that continued high extinction rates will wreak havoc on ecosystems and biodiversity, ultimately assuring mass extinction. Just as humans were the ones who accelerated the rate of extinction, we also have the ability to slow it down. With a focus on conserving threatened species, controlling climate change, and protecting natural habitats, humans can have a positive impact on mass extinction.
ReplyDeleteAfter viewing both videos and the article, I have formed an opinion on overpopulation. It has begun to worry me that the world will become overcrowded. If we continue to populate the earth at the current pace, eventually we will hurt the environment so much it will not be able to go to its original position. After learned about our Carbon Footprint, I see that each and every person has a major impact on our earth, and therefore the more people there are, the more our ecosystem will be damaged. The problem however, is not easily fixed. Not wanting to recreate China's mistake upon trying to fix overpopulation, the best option I still believe would be to have a limit of children you are allowed to bare. It is inhumane to take children from their mothers, or make women infertile so they could not carry another child, and while I can not come up with a better option I believe there is one out there. As John F Kennedy said “Our problems are man made, therefore they can be solved by man.” This supports my thinking that the answer is out there somewhere.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. It is important to keep our Earth to the best of its ability, and while there seems to be no current way to fix it, we should try with all our might to.
DeleteOverpopulation is a huge problem right now. With the medicine and technology we have now a days people are living much longer so the natality is much higher than the mortality. This will eventually lead to people running out of resources like water food ect. In order to decrease the population we have to limit the amount of babies people have to 1 or 2. I think this is the only option because we cant increase the mortality rate that is just not right. So I think our only chance for this planet to last much longer is to limit the amount of babies people can have.
ReplyDeleteI do think over population is a problem, if there are too many of us then our resources will run out. We already have starving children all over the world so more people would just make problems like this worse. It could also start more problems. It would affect everything including climate.
ReplyDeleteI've never really had the issue of overpopulation on my radar but after hearing some of the statistics and ideas shared in both videos I recognize what a threat it's becoming. I liked the way the first video put it by explaining the ratio of population to resources. Many of the huge concerns included a lack of renewable and non-renewable resources. What I was very surprised about was the way overpopulation is contributing to pollution. The statistic of 14,000 deaths per day is scary to hear. I noticed how the video suggested a lack of birth control is one of the reasons why overpopulation is so large. I feel like there is a different and better solution to this problem that we can come up with. I'm very curious now though to see how our presidential candidates respond to this problem. I'm hoping that they have a plan or solution they're working on and don't overlook this problem like many regular people do everyday. I'm glad I've become more educated on this problem because I feel I have been focusing more on things that are not as harmful as this crisis is.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we are facing overpopulation and if our population grows too high then our resources will be stretched very thin. Overpopulation does affect climate change because there will be more people breathing which makes more nitrogen into the air. More nitrogen in the air would mean that there will be climate change. If i remember clearly from the debate, Trump believes that climate change is a hoax created by China. I think that i should become the next president and make a law. That law will be that you can only have 1 child (similar to the law in china).
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the videos and reading the article I think that we as a species need to take steps to preserve the earth and prevent overpopulation. The issue that people are running into is that we cant bully other countries into making these choices. Donald trump backs his own idea that climate change is a hoax from china to scare us. Hillary Clinton stated that she wants to combat it if she becomes president.
ReplyDeleteOverpopulation is getting out of hand, if it already hasn't yet. I believe that this is a problem. The amount of oil used was so horrifying to me. Our resources aren't renewable. That might be why their called non renewable resources. What's going to happen when we run out. This has impacted the climate change because with more and more people, As for a solution to this problem, I currently don't have one. Limiting the amount of kids isn't in my like list. Killing children isn't there either. I personally hate the idea of both of them. The closest thing to a solution that I can think of is to start with the teens. Teens clearing aren't prepared for a family, especially on their own like most situations. My suggestion is to stop being irresponsible and adding more to our population if your just going to A: kill them, B: put them up for adoption, or C: keep them and be a teen parent. I couldn't find overpopulation quotes, but I agreed with Trump that we have always welcomed legal immigrants. Overpopulation can be solved, but everyone has to pitch in.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you and I understand and love how u worded this because I don't think teens should be irresponsible but it's not always the case
DeleteI believe that we are reaching overpopulation and we will eventually be screwed and we will die from not having enough resources because they are not renewable this can be fixed by not having more than one kid and we can limit immigration
DeleteOverpopulation is a problem that may be rearing its head in the near future in many developing countries. With the current fertility rates in those countries, they will be facing a severe overpopulation problem while those in developed countries whose population is decreasing will not. One fear that is associated with the growing population is the lack of resources. With more people comes more need for resources but less resources to use, and more possible consequences to the environment. We need to worry more about the Earth we live on and whether it will be able to support us, even though the population may or may not grow.
ReplyDeleteOverpopulation seems to only be causing problems in today's world. Rapid expansion and population growth occurred within the last 200 years because we had the technology to support it. But now that we see the downsides to the byproduct of medical advancements and we're trying to find ways to reduce the negative connotations that come with it. We use many more resources daily with our population than that of sparse population, and even with the use of alternative methods to reduce the impacts, we still use resources to create that. In the end, only time will tell the results of our own making.
ReplyDeleteOverpopulation is a problem. Due to increased natality and a decrease in mortality the earth is becoming overpopulated. Overpopulation causes lack of resources, growing disease, environmental pollution, global warming, and will slow efforts to reduce poverty. Scientist warn that within a few decades at least half the plant and animal life will be extinct as a result of climate change, habitat loss, pollution Scientists also believe that since rain forest once covered 14% of the earth's land and now only cover 6% that by the end of the century the remaining rain forest will have already been consumed.
ReplyDeleteI think human population will become a major problem heading into the later years of the 21st Century. It is my opinion that by 2050, when our population is predicted to be 10 billion, people will start to see the effects of overpopulation on climate change. There are many different factors in what comes next when talking about population growth, and the duration of how long we have until the world cannot hold and more people will differ based on the direction humanity decides to take to solve the problem. The two people who represent those different paths at the moment are Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton accepts and will fight global warming by cutting spending on fossil fuels and spending that money on cutting wastefulness, in addition to launching a $60 billion Clean Energy Challenge in order to cut carbon pollution and expand clean energy. She also wants to install half a billion solar panels to help ensure clean energy. I think Hillary’s plan to step up the fight against climate change will be mostly successful and better for our country. However, no world is perfect and I believe the extensive use of solar panels will prove to be problematic in both spending and reliability. Trump, however, has no plan to combat climate change and claims it is a hoax created by the Chinese to weaken our manufacturing and business. Now that he is a politician, he denies he ever claimed Climate Change was a hoax but still does not see it as a threat to the world. I think, although the spending and commitment to the project would be big, that fusion energy is the best and final way to produce clean energy for the future. It does not emit any greenhouse gas, require any carbon, or expend any radioactive waste; the only resource it needs is inexhaustible hydrogen from seawater. The laws I would put in place that differ from Clinton would be less money on solar energy, and more money put into the fusion energy project.
ReplyDeleteOverpopulation is a problem we as a population need to address. Many may think that we have enough resources to sustain this exponential growth of the population. But the reality is as time goes on we will eventually run out of reusable and non-reusable resources because there won't be enough to keep up with the amount of people that we have. And obviously we don't want to end up having to face the mass extinction of the human race, but along with not having enough resources we are continuing to overpopulate due to high fertility rates and better medical technology, these are both great things until we run out of space for all of the lives being saved and brought into the world. In order to create the space taht we need, habitats of animals will have to be compromised. But then where would the animals go? Over all we as a species need to start limiting our reproduction and start taking this problem more seriously.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching these videos and reading the article I agree that we are facing a huge overpopulation problem. If we keep reproducing at the rate we are our resources are going to be stretched very thin.Soon resources will be very hard to come across and afford.Resources will be scarce and we will really have to cut down on how much we consume. We already have many starving people around the world if we keep reproducing at this rate soon we will run out of all of our resources. Then the big question will be what to do now that it is to late?
ReplyDeleteOverpopulation is a problem that needs to be addressed; if not soon, we could risk damaging our planet in ways not imaginable. If our current process continues, we will continue to tear down vast forests, and kill off millions of species of animals. Not only that, but other valuable resources like land space, fossil fuels and minerals will continue to disappear. As an overseer, I think the UN needs to install rigorous laws to balance out natality and mortality. If this happens we slow down the risk if not entirely eliminate some of these irreversible damages from ever happening.
ReplyDeleteI agree that overpopulation is a big problem. There has been an increase in natality and a decrease in mortality. Food production isn’t as fast as population growth, so then we will run out of resources eventually. Overpopulation does have an effect on climate change. Trump doesn’t think there is scientific evidence that climate change is real and Clinton believes climate change is an “urgent threat.” I think that what we should do is have a law where you can only have two kids to make the natality rate equal to the mortality rate so that overpopulation does not become an even bigger problem.
ReplyDeleteDo I think we’re facing a huge problem of overpopulation? Yes, overpopulation has become a huge problem causing a lack in renewable and nonrenewable resources, diminishing sustainable food and fresh water, and many other things. Our overpopulation is caused by women haveing to many children so the population size is not equal. Overpopulation is also causing a shortage of resources like food, and water and this could cause something devastating to happen to the ecosystem. So far water pollution causes approximately 14,000 deaths per day. Soon there will be more deaths due to the lack of resources and even if you don’t want to believe there’s a problem, there is and we need to fix it.
ReplyDeleteOnce exposed to the concept of overpopulation my head raced about the possibility, people could reach our capacity we could literally run out of resources. Along with the more people we are going to have to provide thing like fossil fuels which adds salt to the wound of one of our biggest problems in america, climate change. i think that we should make things like birth control and (controversy warning) abortion free along with children limits can slow and and level out the population growth
ReplyDelete
