Dear Stress....Let's Break Up

And the winner is......Stress and the Digestive System.

Stress can cause lots of problems throughout your body and this week we will look at how stress affects digestion.  I found video clips, articles and more for you to peruse this week in order to write your response about stress and digestion.

The American Psychological Association completed a study in 2013 that found the majority of teens are experiencing extreme stress.  The primary cause of this stress is school.

Read through one or more of the articles above and watch the brief video clip.  What is stress?  What causes you stress?  What effects does stress have on the digestive system?  Why?  What are some of the most common chronic disorders of the digestive system?  Explain at least one disorder.  Are there any other systems that are affected by stress?  Finally, what can you do to alleviate some of your stress?  What works for you?  For me a good run always puts me in a better frame of mind.

  1. Stress is our body's response to any kind of threat. Anything and everything can cause stress. For me stress is trying to find a balance between school and doing what I enjoy. School almost always takes the majority of my nights. When we go through stress, our blood focuses on our arms, legs and head. Our digestive system slows way down with the decreased blood flow. Weight gain and indigestion are two issues that can pop up under stress. The infamous term “stress eating” applies to weight gain as does the increased production of cortisol and insulin. There are lots of options for relieving stress. One good idea is to talk about your problems rather than keeping them internalized. People such as loved ones and/or therapists are attainable options. Talking to family really helps me relieve some stress. I also run every morning before school and listen to music. These three things have helped me calm myself down on a regular basis.

    1. I think that's awesome that you run every morning! I don't know if I could ever wake up early enough to do that, but I too enjoy listen to music. I think that's an awesome way to just wind down and just relax for a little bit after a long day or even during it.

    2. I also stress out about balancing school with everything else. I listen to music as much as I can to calm down. It really does help :).

    3. I agree. School does cause a lot of stress in my life, and not just my grades. There's a ton of drama in high school!!!

  2. Stress is a state of physical, mental, or emotional strain. Stress is caused by anything that puts strain on you or forces you to be stressed. Stress affects every part of the digestive system. If you're stressed then you're nervous system breaks down then your digestive system will shut down because they central nervous system will shut down blood circulation. The most chronic disorders of stress are heart disease, asthma, obesity, diabetes, headaches and depression. Headaches are a constant pain in the head. I think all systems are affected by stress depending on how you react to stress is how your body reacts to the stress. I think in order to relieve stress it's up to you, and you have to be willing to take time out of your day to have that time to yourself. I don't really ever relieve stress I just kinda deal with it. But sports is where I take out my stress now that the seasons are starting back up!

  3. I read the APA article. One disorder of the digestive system is heartburn, which is when acid splashes up from the stomach and lands on places it doesn’t belong. The immune system is also affected by stress, because chronic stress can make it weaker. Stress is when the body transfers most of its blood to places more important for physical survival (i.e. brain, arms, legs), and away from the digestive system. With less blood, digestion doesn’t work as well or as fast. There are many ways to get rid of stress, but I listen to music.

    1. I use music as a way to relieve my stress too. It's very calming and enjoyable, and lots of times I'm able to remember some of the other times I listened to whatever song and go back to that time when I wasn't stressed.

    2. I use many different methods and music is one of them. I love how much information you gave in this post.

    3. I also use music as a stress reliever sometimes. Instead on focusing on something, you can just be calm, and for me that helps me get over whatever is making me stressed.

    4. I think it's pretty funny that heartburn doesn't even affect the heart. Does it cause ulcers as well?

  4. Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Some of the main things that have been the cause of my stress recently are school, moving, and not getting enough sleep. In recent years, doctors have uncovered a remarkably complex connection between the brain and the digestive system. The entire system is extremely sensitive to our moods. The stomach and intestines actually have more nerve cells than the entire spinal cord, leading some experts to call the digestive system a "mini brain." A highway of nerves runs directly from the real brain to the digestive system, and messages flow in two directions. Experts now see stress as a major player in a wide range of digestive problems, including irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, and heartburn. Heartburn is caused when stomach acid enters the esophagus. When functioning normally, the lower esophageal sphincter opens like a one-way valve that allows food into the stomach, but does not let it out the same way. However, at times the sphincter relaxes and allows stomach juices to flow upward into the esophagus. My main stress-reliever is music. Whenever I feel extra strain on my body or mind I just put some headphones in and listen to my favorite songs. They always seem to be able to cheer me up.

  5. Stress is your body's response to any real or imagined threat. Many things cause stress, like school, a job, family issues, practically anything can cause stress. Stress can cause affect the digestive system by causing the blood to go to your limbs and brain, leaving little blood to the digestive system. This does not allow proper digestion of food. A common digestive system problem are peptic ulcers. They can be caused by stress, alcohol, and drugs. They can eat a hole through your stomach or small intestine. I am frequently stressed out by school and family. One way I alleviate stress is by watching Netflix. by watching Netflix I take my mind off of the problem and can relax.

    3. I agree that stress can be caused by a real or imagined threat, since stress can be caused by something that's happening now (physically or real) and something that might happen alter (mentally or imagined). I also think it's interesting how a few people have put that stress is a response to a threat, since I didn't think of this I found it interesting to see it in so many other responses.

  6. When under stress, you don’t process food the same as you would not under stress. Stress is an real or imagined threat and the body's response to it. Natural absorption decreases when you are stressed out which affects your body greatly. “Under stress we are putting the body in the opposite direction we would want it to be.” Surprisingly, under stress there is as much as 4x less blood flow to the gut, which poses many health risks. Stress and come in many shapes and sizes such as the weather, grades, or friends. To avoid or diminish stress you can try breathing techniques; counting to 10 or even a technique called mindfulness. Mindfulness works well for me because it calms me down and helps me focus on the task in front of me without becoming overwhelmed. For me my main point of stress comes from studying for 200 point tests; however, I love learning new things.

  7. Stress is any real or imagined threat and how your body responds to it. So stress can be caused by any problem in your life. Stress causes a decrease in nutrients absorption, decreased oxygenation to your gut, 4 times less blood flow to your digestive system and decreased enzymatic output in your gut. Stress affects your digestive system because the digestive system is controlled by enteric nervous system, a system composed of hundreds of millions of nerves that communicate with the central nervous system. Since it is connected to you central nervous system, which controls blood flow, when stress activates your fight or flight it can cause your whole digestive system to shut down. One chronic diseases that can be caused by stress is ulcers. An ulcer is a hole in your stomach. They may not be a direct connection but stress can cause more infections in your body and ulcer can be caused by bacterial infections. Other chronic disorders caused by stress are heartburn, indigestion, and Crohn's disease. Not only is the digestive system affected by stress. But almost all systems in your body are affected by stress. Some ways you can prevent stress and the diseases you can get in your digestive system are relaxation therapy. Relaxation therapy is like yoga and any meditating that helps you focus on other things than everything you have to go do. You could also talk to friends, limiting stressors, and having a well balanced diet. For me working out works the best like running and swimming.

  8. Stress is any real or posed threat on you or your body, and how our body reacts to it. It affects our digestive system by messing with it and not letting us digest fully. Stress sometimes completely shuts down our digestive system. Stress decreases nutrient absorption and decreases oxygen to our gut. overall, stress "attacks" our digestive system and messes with a lot in our body. If we are always in stress and eating our digestive system does not digest the food as well. This can cause us to eat more and more and we will gain weight. We will not get the nutrients we need. To alleviate stress you can do many things, like exercise, or do something you enjoy. Chronic stress can raise blood pressure, cause anxiety, and weaken your immune system. Playing sports and sometimes just relaxing helps me relieve stress.

  9. I didn’t know that stress actually that shut down or slow the digestive system. But when we originally very stressed we would of been doing something very important like fleeing for our life. But know that is not as useful because we are now stressed about work or school or many other thing and we naturally eat which is not very good because our digestive system does not work. Now knowing this I will probably eat less when i am but i am still going to eat just because.

  10. Stress is a big problem in the life of teenagers. Stress is a negative state of mind that you get from school, family life, friends or anything that could possibly upset you. Stress can affect the digestive system by not being able to fully digest, assimilate, or burn calories which you're stressed. This can causes your heart rate to increase or blood pressure rises and make your digestive system shut down because your body is worrying about the stressful things. It could also causes a decrease in nutrient absorption or decreased oxygenation to your gut and as much as 4 times less blood flow to your digestive system which seems crazy. Ulcers can be created by stress which affect the digestive system because they are in the stomach and the stomach is important in the digestive system. When I am stressed out I like to listen to music because that helps me forget about it and stop stressing about the problem.

  11. Stress is any real or imagined threat and how your body responds to it. Stress is a huge factor in problems we often face. Due to stress, during digestion it causes the system to get four times less blood flow to our mid-section. Because of the lack of blood flow the small intestine can’t do it’s job properly and therefore doesn’t absorb as much nutrients as it normally would. Our digestion system is controlled by the enteric nervous system. This system is made up of millions of nerves that “talk” to the central nervous system. Because the nervous system controls blood flow when we stress ourselves out our digestive system closes until we stop worrying about our problems. LIke Mrs. Muzzca's story about how she worried herself to an ulcer and this is actually pretty common. Ulcers are holes that can develop in the esophagus, stomach and small intestine lining. Stress can also cause heartburn, tense muscles, constipation and diarrhea. To stop stress there’s many remedies but most include relaxation and mind-clearing. These include things like yoga or massages. I workout when I’m stressed weather it’s cheer or using a punching bag. Other times I listen to music way to loud and scream into a pillow. It’s whatever works for you.

  12. Stress is any real or imagined threat, and your bodies response to it. Stress causes a decrease in nutrient absorption, as well as a decreased amount of oxygen reaching your gut. Building on this, you have up to four times less blood flow in your digestive system. While under the stress response, the body increases the production of cortisol, and insulin. When the body is in stress, it has the ability to gain weight, and not lose weight or body fat. Stressed is brought about when you are pressured to get something done, or when you have a lot on your mind. Talking about problems, and what is concerning you can majorly bring down stress levels. Working out and hitting helps me relieve some of my built up stress.

  13. Stress, according to the video, “is any real or imagined threat, and your bodies response to it”. Personally, school and extracurricular activities stress me out. Stress slows or even stops the digestive system because it diverts all of its energy to the so-called “threat”. It can cause abdominal pain and discomfort, which can cause, in the end, more stress! Some common chronic disorders are increase in stomach acids and bacterial growth. Although the effects of increasing stomach acids aren't very clear, it has still been linked to stress & anxiety. This affects the digestion in the stomach, and in some cases, may even carry on to digestion in the small intestine. Stress can also affect the nervous system and the brain. It can cause sleeping issues additional stress. To eliminate stress in your digestive system, you could, go for a jog, eat easier to digest food, and don’t avoid sleep. Personally to avoid stress, I like to dance or sleep.

  14. Stress is a state of mental or emotional pain caused by any type of threat, real or imaginary. Some things that cause me stress are school, gymnastics, and sometimes family, and friends. When people have stress, it causes their digestive system to shut down. Blood rushes to your limbs and brain, cutting off circulation to your digestive system. Stress can cause Heart disease, asthma, Obesity, diabetes, and heartaches. Some things people do to relieve stress is meditation, or talking through your pain with another person. Running is a good stress reliever for me.

  15. Stress is when you mentally realize a serious threat and how your body reacts to this. Stress is caused by feeling overwhelmed and feeling anxiety over an idea or thought. This can cause a decrease in the amount of nutrients absorbed, lessen the intake of oxygen to your gut, and not as much blood circulation throughout your digestive system. Also, when under stress, you tend to eat more and you do not digest the food properly. As you eat under stress, a common effect seen in many people is a increase amount of fat gained around the waist. One disorder would be headaches which are caused by stress by the amount of tension you are experiencing. It is important to not stress too much amount about something or else it causes tension throughout your body which is how headaches occur. Some ways to lessen the amounts of stress are to eat easy to digest food, getting enough sleep, and exercise such as jogging. I personally like taking a quick break from what I am stressing about to listen to music and then start working again which allows me to be more focused.

  16. Stress is our body's reaction to any real or made up threat in our lives. Any problem big or small can trigger stress, affecting all aspects of the digestive system. When we are stressed our bodies decrease nutrient absorption and oxygenation to our gut, decreases the amount of blood flow and the enzymatic output in our gut. Some of the most chronic disorders caused by stress are heart disease, obesity, and headaches. Headaches can range anywhere from a minor pain to an unbearable pain depending on the amount of stress your body is on. 17. Stress is when your body isn’t under a normal state and you are usually worried or anxious about something. Maybe you are stressed about a sport game or an upcoming test, but whatever your stresser is it has the same affect on your body. It has an effect that you don’t always see on the outside. When you are a stress eater the food doesn’t properly go through the digestive system. This can cause major problems. Digestion is controlled by the enteric nervous system which communicates with the central nervous system. When you are stressed it throws your whole body off. Although a test is something you should study for and try hard on, it is not worth stressing a ton because in the end it will throw off your whole body. The same goes with a sporting event. Another thing stress can cause is lack of sleep. If your mind is running all the time worried you will not get a well rested sleep. An illness that can occur within the digestive system is ulcers. This is when the HCl acid in your stomach burns a hole through your stomach. This can be caused by stress. A way I relieve stress is putting away all distractions and going to sleep, sometimes it is the opposite and I go on my phone to listen to music. These ways work for me but there are many stress relievers.

  18. Stress is any real or imagined strain that is put on you mentally. When you are stressed out your entire body is affected including your digestive system. Under stress the digestive system will reach a point where it completely shuts down because when your stressed your body takes all of the mental and physical power and focus to close in on that one thing your stressed about. This can cause you to have an increase in blood pressure and gastrointestinal problems which could be as little as a minor stomach ache or could be as serious as vomiting. Some ways that you can alleviate stress are by eating a healthy diet, not consuming as much caffeine and sugar, and getting the right amount of sleep. For me I just try to block it out and focus on what I am trying to do.

  19. Stress- any real or imagined threat, and your body’s response to it. Stress is when any real or imagined threat is what can trigger adrenalin in the body. Stress pretty much stops the digestive system completely. It stops the stomach therefore stops everything after that. You don’t need your stomach to fight in battle,so your body sends the energy powering your stomach to your extremities. Researchers speculated that stress could pump up the production of HCl and can lead to more frequent heartburns, also the stress makes the esophagus more sensitive to the HCl. The circulatory system is affected because the body needs to pump blood into the extremities. There is a chemical that your body releases when you eat peanuts. It makes you happy. I don’t remember what its called because I saw it on Criminal Minds but it seems to be true. If not exercising releases something in your body that calms you down.

  20. Stress is any real or imagined threat and how your body responds to it. So, stress can be caused by unhappiness, abrupt changes in your life (new job, new school, or moving), lots of schoolwork, etc. Stress affects every part of the digestive system. When you are under a lot of stress, your body will automatically go into “survive/panic mode” causing your digestive system to shut down. This happens because when you are very stressed your body is going to use all the energy it can to basically relieve you from that stress. Some of the most common disorders of the digestive system caused by stress are anxiety, depression, obesity, heart disease, and weakened immune system. Anxiety is the most common symptom of stress in my opinion. Anxiety caused by stress definitely wears on one's health causing headaches, sleep deprivation, skin rashes, and high blood pressure. In my opinion, all systems of your body can potentially be affected by stress, it just depends on they way that you react to stress. There are several different ways for one to relieve their stress. Some of these methods include doing physical activities, talk it out, and simply sleep. I noticed that a lot of people mentioned that sports are their main way to reduce stress. I find this interesting because for me, sports cause me stress. I think that this could be due to the fact that I am sometimes hard on myself only because I just want to do better. The best way for me to alleviate my stress is to take time out of my day for myself and just relax.

  21. To me, stress is anything that can cause one to worry/ panic or cause s big emotional change negatively. The things the cause me to stress the most (ironically) is school and probably biology with the constant quizzes and need to study and to keep up with the program. Stress can cause the digestive system to not do its job right, and not absorb sell the nutrients it needs to, which I thought was pretty interesting. This happens because of your body's natural reaction to stress, and the shift of blood flow from your midsection, to you hands, legs, etc. Some things that can occur when you eat is your change in eating (eating too much or too little). I personally, don't eat at all when I'm stressed, so this messed with me physically and mentally because I'm really tired and can't focus to save my life. The other system that would be affected by stress would be you nervous system, because you would be on edge and have a different state of mind, making your nervous system do weird things and not act like it normally would. When I'm stressed I like to kick back, relax and think so I can get ,y stuff together. This calms me and let's me plan ahead of the stuff I've some and need to do, which prevents future stress as well.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Stress is the body's reaction to any sort of thing the threatens shows a bad future in anyway. Stress is not good. You cannot eat under stress really. Your digestive system completely shuts down and gives out and blood runs to your head, arms, and legs. This is why stress is not good for you. Not only do you not focus on other things, you lose the ability to have a functional digestive system. Stress is basically shutting mostly everything down in your body. Which is not healthy. Stress may happen sometimes but it should not happen often. If it does it needs to be controlled, because as we know stress is a huge digestive problem.

  23. Stress or anxiety is a feeling that human beings receive under very strict and upsetting circumstances. It is like a little devil inside your head that refuses to go away and just keeps building up as time goes on. This feeling is often experienced due to school, work, life at home, finances, or relationships. Not only is this bad for your emotional state, but it can harm your physical condition as well. Immune systems don’t function properly, giving you a higher chance of getting sick, and your nervous system overwhelms causing a number of not-so-pleasant issues. To alleviate stress I often listen to music and drink some water. Maybe it’s because the rhythm of the song soothes my brain, helps me to relax and clears my mind a bit. The intake of something often helps me body stop acting so irrationally, and water is my best option. Otherwise I would probably at like 3 bags of popcorn.

  24. Stress is possibly one of the best and worst emotions. It triggers the best in us and pushes us to our finest but too much stress can flush you away in a tidal wave of health problems. Several of the diseases caused by stress are heart disease and chronic obesity. Tests give me awful awful stress often leading to serious problems and once even lead to hospitalization. One of the best ways I relieve stress is by reading with a nice cup of hot tea, you'd be surprised how nice it feels.

  25. Stress is any real or imagined threat and your body's response to it.Stress is when heart rate increases, blood pressure increases, and blood is directed away from the mid section, blood then goes to the arms leg and head for quick fighting, fleeing, and thinking. When we get stressed and eat no matter how healthy the food is it. doesn't get fully digested and the proper calories don't get burned.when in high stress situations the digestive system shuts down because it's not in use and energy is focused to parts of the body that need it. some chronic disorders would be heart burn, intimation and esophageal spasms. When stressed the stomach produces a lot of hydrochloric acid so it is more often the acid splashes into the esophagus causing more rapid and occurring heart burn. To name a few the heart, the brain and immune system are all affected by stress. I alleviate by my stress by relaxing, taking a nap or preparing for upcoming tests I have.

  26. Stress is me going to school. Stress affects the digestive system by deactivating to support more important parts of the body where it's needed more urgently. Seemingly by this logic the part of the body that blocks the HCl from going up in the stomach would be deactivated, so more heart attacks. What I do to get rid of stress to play some video games because those require me to focus.

  27. Stress is definitely a big problem, especially among teenagers. School is probably the number one cause of teen stress levels. 28. Eating with stress hurts our digestion system so that it doesn't digest properly. Blood goes to the head, legs, and arms and digestion stops. Stress is any real or imagined threat so being worried about your life will you send you into this stress reaction. Low nutrient absorption, and enzyme production greatly decrease under stress. Cortisol and insulin are greatly increased, these cause inability to lose weight and inability to grow muscle. In America many people eat with stress which is the reason for all of the obese people in America. Stress and anxiety also reduce sleep which in turn hurts digestion even more. To relieve my stress I usually hang out with my friends and become more content and calm within minutes.

  30. Stress is how the body reacts to any threat, real or imaginary, in our lives. It can have many negative effects on the body, like a decrease in nutrient absorption, decrease in blood flow, and can cause disorders like heart disease, obesity, and headaches. Stress also causes the digestive system to not work properly, which is why we eat a lot more when were under stress. More food consumption causes obesity and other health problems. When a person is stressed out, their body will start having problems. Stress can cause you to gain weight, and also slow down your digestion system. Some ways to decrease the amount of stress you have is to manage your time, get enough rest, and exercise. Stress is really bad for our bodies and it can give us some chronic disorders. This could be headaches, obesity, and many other things. I get really bad headaches sometimes and I think one of the causes of this is stress. For me to get rid of stress I usually need to take a nap or relax and listen to music.

  32. Stress is our body's reaction to a real or imaginary threat according to our bodies. School is the main stressor for teenagers as well as many other things that can cause stress. Stress causes the blood to flow away from the digestive system because it is not necessary to digest your breakfast if you are being chased by a lion. A very common chronic disorder is obesity because your digestion slows down and puts more Cortisol into your body which increases the size of the midsection. The best way to get rid of stress is to do something you love. When I am stressed I go outside and play basketball.

  33. I looked around a bit and found this page on stress http://www.mtstcil.org/skills/stress-definition-1.html according to this website stress is “your body's way of responding to any kind of demand.” After that it went on and said “Stress can be good or bad” this surprised me, I always relate stress as a negative thing and definitely not positive. Stress is caused by many things; some common things are: Survival stress, Internal stress, Environmental stress, and Fatigue or overwork. Stress has many effects on the digestion system such as irritable bowel, Ulcers, Indigestion, Heartburn and a lot more. You can get some serious problems like Heart disease, obesity and asthma. I know for a fact that when you’re stressed your asthma gets worse because it’s happened to me before. To get rid of stress I personally either listen to music or play one of my video games.

  34. I learned that stress plays a huge part in our everyday life! There are many horrible side effects that are involved with stress. Eating healthy and moderate exercise are all good ways that we can handle stress and the bad side effects. We are all going to have stress in our lives. The difference is the way we handle and treat it. Basketball is where I let all of my stress out. It eases my mind and physical it does too.

  35. Stress is something that puts your body in a state of non function. The body now is sending blood to the parts of the body that will assist in in a "fight or flight" situation. And with a decrease in metabolism, it's much easier to put on fat and absorb less nutrients. Stress is caused by almost anything; the economy, your house, social experiences, etc. Anything that will make you uncomfortable really. During stress, the entire digestive system practically shuts down as the blood is sent elsewhere. Personally, to get rid of stress, I just focus on breathing and my anxiety or stress decreases.

  36. Stress is a state of mental pressure or tension resulting from demanding circumstances. Our brain controls our nervous system and our nervous system controls the rest of our body. When humans are stressed out, it causes less blood flow throughout our bodies, mainly in our mid sections or digestive tracts. We also receive less nutrients throughout our body. It’s important to eliminate stress to maintain a healthy lifestyle. To do that, we can get exercise and get a good amount of sleep.

  37. Stress is when your body realizes that there is a mental or physical threat present. Any type of trigger will make this process start. When we are stressed chemical processes slow down. This can cause many issues in our day to day life. Thins that can happen are heart disease, headaches, and obesity. Normally my stress is caused by school. The weird thing is what i do to alleviate it is go back to school and go to cheer practices. This gets rid of everything for a couple hours then when i get home i eat and chill so i have some time to relax. This is what works for me and most of the girls on my team.

  38. I read the APA article on stress in teens. Stress is a state of physical, mental, or emotional strain. For me, there are not a lot of things that cause me stress, but school definitely does. Stress can cause heartburn, and even ulcers in the digestive system. This is because when we are stressed, our bodies tend to slow down. For me, one thing that can help me reduce my stress level is playing strategy games. When I can get my mind to focus on something that is not related to my source of stress, I lose that stress entirely.

  39. I think that there are alot of things that cause me to have stress. But i like the main thing is school. Alot of classes give alot homework and if you are taking a honor or AP clase thats even more work. So getting all this homework and doing sport is a real juggling act. Getting out of school at 2:50, having to ride home you just want to crash in your bed but you cant you got to stay up and do homework and sports witch can bring apon alot of stress for me.

  40. Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. Anything you don't like/scares you can cause stress. I get stressed when I think about my future and what happens if I mess up. Another part of your body which can experience stress is your brain which is helpful in a survival situtatuion because it makes you more aware but prolonged stress is bad leading to impaired memory. One of the most common disorders with the digestive system is diarrhea where to much water is absorbed by the large intestine. Being out of school helps me alleviate stress because then I know I'm not going to have any more work to do for the day.

  41. Stress is your body's natural response to any real or imaginary threat. When your body is under stress it lessens the blood flow to your digestive system because it thinks you will need the energy to fight or flee instead. If the body is constantly stressing then the digestive system sort of shuts down. This lowers metabolism and makes it easier to gain weight. Also problems like ulcers and heartburn can be caused by your stomach producing too much HCl due to stress. Stress can cause other problems too like headaches and migraines. Stress can be caused by almost anything, school, work, family, public speaking, homework ext. I usually don’t deal with stress. I just bottle it up and tell myself I’ll get through whatever is stressing me out. Things I do most of the time to calm down are take deep breaths, drink lots of water, and listen to music.

  42. Stress is the way our bodies react to any real or made up threat we face in our life. I knew stress had very negative effects on the body, but I never thought about the systems it messed with too. I have been stressed out before, and school is usually the source of this stress. I worry about my homework and getting things done on time, along with getting good grades. I try not to stress over a lot because I know it does bad things to your body. Some things it can do to your digestive system include causing ulcers in your stomach. Stress can also cause people to eat more, making them eat in unhealthy amounts. One disorder the digestion system can develop is gallstones. This is when gallstones form and try to pass, when they can’t, it makes a very painful feeling. Stress not only messes with your digestive system, it harms your cardiac system, increasing your chances of heart disease. Some ways I try to avoid stress is by playing an instrument, this helps me think better. Stress can be very dangerous, having a way to alleviate stress can really help you lead a better life.

  43. Stress and anxiety is any physical, emotional, or mental factor that causes tension in your body. Many things can cause you to be stressed out, from a big test coming up to paying your bills. Things that make me stressed out is (honestly) school, family, and friends. This tension can disrupt our digestive system and shut it down completely. The amount of nutrients absorbed and blood flow will decrease and even cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal system. Stress can cause different things such as constipation, indigestion, and nausea. Indigestion is discomfort in the stomach when it has trouble digesting food. Some things that alleviate my stress is listening to music, taking a walk, and other things that are calming.

  44. As stated in the video stress is any real or imagined threat and your body’s response to it. Probably the only thing that causes me stress is homework and school. with homework and everything it is extremely hard not to be stressed. In freshman seminar we studied mindfulness which taught us to be present and aware. Mindfulness is really good at relieving stress.

  45. Stress is any real or imagined threat, and your body’s reaction to it. What causes this stress can be anything in your life. School, lack of sleep, friends, and family can all cause stress. This affects the digestive system by shutting it down, with 4 times less blood flow and decreased enzymatic output in your gut. Also there is an increased production in cortisol and insulin. One chronic disorder that is caused by this is ulcers. Ulcers are when too much Hydrochloric Acid is in the stomach, and it forges a hole through the outside wall and causes extreme pain. Other areas affected can be your waist, because excess amounts of cortisol tends to cause weight gain along your midsection. I found that listening to music or playing basketball relieves my stress and puts me in a more relaxed mood.

  46. Stress, by definition, is the body’s response to a real or imaginary threat. The effects of stress include the release of hormones, the decrease of enzymatic processes, and the loss of muscle and body weight. Stress can cause many digestive problems, one of the worst being IBS. This syndrome can cause cramping, constipation and diarrhea. The circulatory system is also affected by stress because it brings blood to the arms and legs. There are many ways to get rid of stress, the most famous being breathing exercises. I usually alleviate stress by running, or the opposite, sleeping.

  47. A major factor of digestive problems is stress, which is a real or imagined threat and the body's reaction. The enteric, parasympathetic, and sympathetic nervous systems all interact, and they relate stress and digestion because the enteric nervous system regulates digestion. In general, stress negatively affects digestion by slowing it down and making it less functional. One chronic disorder that's caused by this relation is depression because the nervous systems are also connected to hormones that involve chemicals affecting emotions. I usually feel stressed or pressured when I have multiple assignments due around the same time for school, but I can alleviate the stress by listening to music or drawing.

  48. Stress is the body's response to any real or imaginary threat. Stress is caused by anything that would give you anxiety and make you worry. For me, my main source of stress is school and sports. When you are stressed your body tends to focus on staying alert and pumping blood throughout your body, which results in it forgetting to tend to the digestive system. Because there is minimum blood flow to the digestive system, it slows down. One effect stress can have on our body is stomach ulcers. stomach ulcers is when the acid in your stomach burn a hole in your stomach lining. One way to combat the negative effect of stress is that when you are stressed, instead of stress easting, you could do something constructive with your stress such as exercising, drawing or reading.

  49. Stress is the body to any threat. Really the only thing that causes me stress is a big test or if im working on a computer and I go to turn it on and it doesn't turn on. Stress causes us to get rid of the blood in our digestive system so that we can respond better during that time. It was meant so that we could survive stressful situations and respond better during that time.  One common chronic disorder that effects the digestive system is ulcers. When you are stressed your stomach makes more HCL which then eats away at your stomach until there is a hole in it. Every organ is effected by stress in some way. In order to alleviate stress your supposed to do something calming. I usually go on the Internet for a while or take my dog on a walk.

  50. Stress is when the body's response to a threat wether real or imaginative. Stress can affect many different things in our body. When you are under stress it causes your body to go into the "flight or fight" mode. When your in flight or fight, your body shuts down which can than lead to many different digestive problems.Stress can also affect your system. Some of the affects that can be caused by stress is inflammation in your gastrointestinal system; you can also get diarrhea, Indigestion, nausea, constipation. Indigestion is when there is an increases of acid in our stomach. One of the things that causes me stress is trying to find time to do everything that needs to be done. Something that i do when i feel stress is dance, it helps me focus on something else for a while and it also helps me to relax.

  51. Any threat to a person’s body can be stress. Stress causes a person’s digestive system to “not work at its full capacity”; it doesn’t let us digest food entirely. Occasionally the stress gets so bad that the digestive system fully shuts down, also decreasing nutrient absorption and the oxygen the gut receives. Gaining weight can also come with stress, because stress causes us to eat and with the digestive system not working fully. People tend to start gaining weight because the food isn’t digested. Raising blood pressure, anxiety, and a weakened immune system are all side effects from chronic pressure. Plus even with the food we do digest, the nutrients aren’t absorbed because of the stress as well! Alleviating stress can be as easy as exercising, or just doing something you like. Personally, I like to watch TV, play sports, or play video games to relieve stress.

  52. Stress is the pressure or tension exerted on a material object. I always knew how stress has a negative impact on pretty much everything and everyone but I never knew how it could mess with the digestive and many other systems in your body.. This actually scares me because I tend to stress a lot mostly about school. I worry about tests, homework, and getting good grades. I also tend to stress of sports and drama and It can be a lot However, I try to stay on top of it all but sometimes that is not the case. When stressing it can be very harmful to your body and your digestive system. Some things it can do includes causing stomach ulcers and can cause to to eat more and more to the point where its unhealthy amounts. Another system it affects is your cardiac system. It can increase your chances of getting heart disease. That seems crazy to me and stress is now something i need to focus on not doing. Some ways I can get rid of stress is listening to music or exercising just to get my mind off it. Overall , stress can be very harmful and if you can find a way to let it all go it will lead you to a happier life.

  53. Stress is when you feel like you are in danger, when you are scared, threatened, anxious etc. There are not a lot of things that cause me to stress. I am pretty laid back so not a lot of things stress me out. But if I had to pick one thing that stresses me out, it would be big tests. Stress effects your body in a ton of ways. When you undergo severe amount of stress/anxiety, your body goes into flight or fight mode and releases adrenaline even though it isn't needed. When I am stressed I normally just try to calm down and find a solution to the reason why I am stressed. For example, if I am stressed about a big test I will study to make myself more confident.

  54. Stress is a real or imagined threat such as being hunted or just worrying about something as simple as getting your homework done. This stress can negatively affect the digestive system by directing blood away from the main body and towards the legs and arms. This is your instinctual response to stress in case you are being hunted and need that push to get you out of harm’s way. Functional gastrointestinal disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is caused by stress and causes pain in the abdomen accompanied by streaks of alternating diarrhea and constipation. Many other chronic pains in the GI tract are caused by stress. Everyone has their own way of coping with stress, for many, and me, sitting in a quiet area and just doing nothing for about half an hour works to relieve stress.

  55. Stress is the body's response to threat. Stress can be caused by anything. From school to dance, too many activities, a death, family problems, homework and so much more. It is mostly caused by pressure. The article, "How stress affects digestion"states, "If you undergo stress, it causes your digestion system to shut down because your main nervous system shuts down blood flow and the contractions of your digestive muscles decreases sections needed. Stress also causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal." The article "Digestive problems and the Effects of Anxiety" says, "One disorder from stress and the digestion system is anxiety. Indigestion can create pain and discomfort. Gas can lead to chest pains and long term discomfort increases anxiety. So if your anxiety is causing indigestion and poor nutritional balance there is a strong chance that it will be long term repercussions." I deal with my stress in a bad way I guess. I hold it in and don't talk about it. I find it easier because you are not bothering people with what you feel thus, not causing drama.

  56. Stress is pressure or tensions exerted on an object. Anything that has a negative effect on you can cause stress Like not enough sleep and lots of homework.Stress can cause gastrointestinal inflammation and make you more susceptible to infections. Most common digestive system diseases are obesity, asthma and diabetes. Obesity is caused when by eating too much and moving too little. If you consume high amounts of energy from your diet, particularly from fat and sugars, but do not burn off the energy through exercise and physical activity, much of the surplus energy is then stored by the body as fat. The nervous system is also directly affected by stress. Doing activities like favorite hobbies are great ways to alleviate stress. For me sleeping helps get red of a lot of stress and playing basketball helps too.

  57. I am rather shocked at how much stress affects our digestive system. It causes our body to be unable to digest food well nor burn calories. It appears that having stress is common for teenagers according to “Teens and Stress: How to Keep Stress in Check”.Stress is any real or imagined threat, and your body responds to it. Teens tend to get it more during school days which can lead them to have eating disorders in either eating less or more than they should.Unfortunately, I think it applies to me. I tend to eat a lot when I get home, especially junk food.So it counts. Stress also affects our health and mood. However, I have a solution for myself. Hiking and yoga always puts me in a good mood, so I plan to do so more often.

P.S. Sorry that it is kind of late but I was rather really busy apart for my quinceanera, but like my mom always says "better late than never".
